View Full Version : Marauder T Converter in a 99 Marquis

I am having an intermittent shudder/vibration at highway speeds (65-75MPH) in my 99 Grand Marquis HPP.
After driving it and experiencing the vibration, my mechanic is pretty much convinced it is the torque converter shuddering.
First of all - does this sound right? I have always thought the torque converter clutch is pretty well locked up at anything over 50MPH and shudder is typically under light throttle between 35 - 45MPH.
Secondly - if a transmission flush (done every 30K) and a little Dr. Tranny Shudder Fix doesnt' cure it - is a Marauder TC a simple bolt on replacement for my car or will I need some other parts, computer flash, etc? Should I go with the 03 or 04 Marauder TC?

Well I was going to ask if you had a chip because I know when I had my '95 tuned, I had it tuned for such hard shifts then I felt the same thing you're probably expieriencing. As for the shuddering though, I'm unsure what else it could be other than the TC. And for the bolt on, I believe it would be a bolt on, but don't quote me.

Hawkszone, if you've had transmission flushes done every 30,000 miles and were using Mercon V (you WERE using Mercon V, right?), then you shouldn't be experiencing TCC shudder, unless the TC is bad. How long ago was the last flush?

The last flush was at 85K and it now has 106K so it would still be a little early. Now the last time the flush (full gravity drain, convertor and all, new filter) was performed my mechanic messed up and put DexIII in there. I had him drain it out 2 days later and refill with Mercon V.
I have also put Dr. Tranny Shudder Fix in there right after that flush as a preventative measure.
Even though my mechanic is almost certain it is the TC, he does admit the vibration could be the rear end. Coincadentally the rear end was serviced about 3 months ago by this same mechanic. I doubt he could have screwed up anything doing a drain and fill with synthetic rear gear lube but you never know.

Torque converter shudder will feel like your going over a washboard road for a second or two every time the lock up engages. The lock up springs are a weak link in the TC and once the converter starts to slip a little it is the beginning of the end. It does not matter how often you change your fluid cause I change mine every 25K since new and still had a converter go at 106k miles in our '00 GM. Be sure the converter engages the pump. There should be about 1/8th inch of clearance or more between the flex plate and the converter body once the bell housing is bolted to the block. Fords are a little trickier than GM's to engage.

when the shudder happens just push the brake pedal lightly....this should disengage the t/c. so if the vibration stops when you press the brake pedal it is definitely the t/c.....

Perform a fluid change with fresh Mercon V as outlined in this article:
http://www.crownvic.net/tech/transservice.htm
Your stock convertor is 12", HPPs recieved them smaller t/c theyear after (00, CVPI begain using 11.25" in 99 and TC Touring since 98)
To use a MM convertor you will also need an 11.25" bolt circle flexplate.
