T6061 is a cheaper/weaker metal than the MMX (Metal Matrix Compound, carbon something or other ceramic mixed with aluminum metal). The MMX stuff is roughly 30% stronger, its about the same weight wise, but has better vibration absorbing properties.

Thats not to say that T6061 is weak or crappy, its not, but compared to MMC stuff its weak-er. T-6061 is used in a boat load of driveshafts for OEM's and aftermarket.

If your in for $400, go the distance and get the MMX, its what like another $80?

What HP will the original MMX hold?

What HP will the original MMX hold?Funny how no one ever asked this before.

What ever drive shaft you select, make sure you need it first, K?

Yeppers.

I remember having a driveshaft built for a friend of mine that drives a '68 camaro drag car with tubs, etc.

He wanted his steel replaced with aluminum, and I referered to our Applications Engineer for assistance.

I gave Scott the estimated horsepower/torque, and was told it didn't matter.

I cannot remember the equation, but the factors were vehicle weight, tread patch, axle wind-up and I believe torque thus yielding a torsional value. All of this while the vehicle is under power, and immediately before the tires lose traction.

This torsional value was the starting point in having the driveshaft spec'd. out.

From there, he built a driveshaft for my friend that works quite well, after 2 different engines and increased horsepower/torque thru the years.

What Dennis is offering is a good driveshaft for what our cars are.

Something to think about,...

Mike.

Well this new shaft is good for 700 RWHP, so Steve you are fine he just made 639 RWHP congradulations and this was on a conservative tune. I will ask Jim at Dynotech Monday on the MMDS

so as far as the vibration goes this shaft is just as good in that regard? I plan on doing road racing instead of drag next season, and a couple of the tracks have to potential to be 140+mph on the straights... just wondering if I should just spend the extra money

I already have one of these new shafts. I didn't THINK I had vibration before, but as stated in other posts, the car rides smoother and feels more refined.

Suki, I think this shaft would be well suited to road racing. My car's highway manners at speed are much improved.

I feel this shaft is the answer for anyone who goes 4.10 and wants to prevent the vibration issues. Further, it's worthwhile in terms of general refinement of the car. I also feel (based on ratings) it will last me into mild supercharged modification as time and money permit.

Shakes, the MMX is $150 more as I recall. For those of us NOT laying down the power you do, I think it will be great.

Since you saved $150 going with the 6061 shaft, get a loop to install while the shaft is out.

140 mph times approx 700-ish revs per mile on the tires divide by 60min/hr times by 4.10 gears gives 6696 rev/min on the shaft. 5798 @ 3.55's.

The shaft is balanced at 6000 (sustained). I would suspect no issue for the momentary bursts to 140. But hey, what do I know?

Put in your own numbers. See how you feel.

I think it was 3.5"? It was lighter than stock, but I never saw the UPS tag, so I don't remember the weight.

That's my imitation of an FHP trooper in a Marauder doing over 150.
