No, I didn't go to Seymour, IN .... but I did attend a local Oktoberfest. Brought back some real memories of my days in Germany over two tours in the Army. :) 1975-1978 and 1986-1989. Great food and beer.

A Little German Oompah Band ... ;)

I don't think it's your beer that that fruity gecko wants to steal... :P ;)

Yep. At the parade field off Route 1. It was open to the public.

 I don't know...that Gecko has a weird smile on his face. Went to Ocktoberfest here about two weeks ago. As you say it brought back old memories. Did two tours there myself, Frankfurt ('72-'76) and Baumholder ('78-"80). Met the wife there who also was in the military.

I was in Baumholder '75-'78 with the 293rd Engineer Battalion. We lived out the back gate in a little town called Reichenbach on the way to Idar Oberstein or Birkenfeld. Lots of fond memories in Baumholder. I know lots of people don't like Baumholder because they only came there for training. For permanent party, I rank it as one of my best assignments and definitely one of the most memorable. My 2nd tour was in Heidelberg. That was nice .... but Baumholder offered more of that genuine German experience.

I took AIT at Ft. Belvoir (52D...Generator Mechanics). After that I went to Bad Kissengen '90-'92.

Octoberfest in Munich ruled!

I was stationed in Munster (the northern one) from '88-92. Lived on the economy in a 18th century farmhouse. Very cool! Oktoberfest was not such a big deal that far north, but we consumed vast quantities of German suds none the less!

Our quarters were in Idar Oberstein and I worked at Boerfink (a bunker/serving as NATO HQ in the event of war). The Mrs. worked in Baumholder at medical clinic there in Medical Records. I even took a few college courses in Baumholder.

I remember the name "Borfink" but can't say that I remember where it was. Guess it was supposed to be that way. ;)

The wife and I were newly married when we lived there. We used to visit Idar Oberstein frequently. I still have a "wax picture" of the Felsenkirche "the Church in the Rocks". We had two favorite restaurants there that we would visit to get Spiessbraten. One was just below the church (The BruckenSchenke) I believe. The other was a small house on top the mountain there ......

We went back in 1987 for a visit of our old stomping grounds and were flabbergasted that they had paved over the river that went through the town. Actually, the river ran through a tunnel under a 4 lane highway. Talk about destroying a really scenic spot. :(

:) Went to your restaurant many times. There was also a little (and I mean little) Italian restaurant in that same area. Some of the best antipasto I have ever had. Somewhere in my house I have a plate with the "church in rock" on it. Very cool place and an even better story. Traditional Cain and Abel, except over a woman. We haven't gone back yet, but plan to one day, hopefully during one of the weinfests, preferrably maybe Koblenz which was on that lasts in the memory.

You were right about Boerfink, it was supposed to be a secret and pretty hush-hush. It was a weird assignment, assigned to NATO in Brussels, but attached to the Air Force in Nuebruecke. Just hated working underground for three years.

Thanks .... I had forgotten that story. We didn't get to Neubrucke too much except to go to the theater there. I remember that's where I saw "Airport '75". I also saw "Jaws" for the first time in the German theater in downtown Baumholder. Fortunately, it was in English. It was very different to drink beer at the movies. :D

I was in Boeblingen and then Frieberg my first tour and Baumholder the second. I really liked Baumholder....the German Ralley Championship ran thru the training area every year, took two trips to the 24 Hours of LeMans, and many trip to the Nurburgring and Hohenheimring. Had my 87 Shelby Charger GLHS over there too. Also visited all the Battle of the Bulge places in Belguim. Even got to drive the Baumholder High School's automotive shop's Pinto Stock Car at the Spangdahlin AFB dirt track. Love that German Beer. Some good times!

There used to be a small dirt track right in Baumholder. They would run several classes of cars there on Saturday afternoons including a Demolition Derby. I don't recall the German Rally; but I have been all through the training area there --- very well kept and looks almost like a national park.

I have made the "Battle of the Bulge" tour as well and hit Ambleve, Malmedy (including the infamous massacre site), Forenchamps (site of the fuel depot), Spa, Stavelot, and Bastogne. Even got to drive the Formula 1 circuit at Spa/Belgium since it forms a part of the regular road system on one side.

When I lived in Heidelberg, I could hear the racing at the Hockenheim Ring from my livingroom. It was only about 2 miles "as the crow flies" from my house. :D
