Here's a couple of the Darton big bore MID wet sleeves:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01474.JPG

And here's the '94 Teksid block, it has no sleeves or other steel in it since it got cryo-treated and painted with thermal disperant coating:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01467.JPG

And here they are put together, note the mounting bosses machined off in the valley so it will clear a Kenne Bell intake:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01502.JPG

Here's a CP forged big bore stroker piston, full-floating wrist pins located for 6" rods, ceramic coated top and teflon coated skirt. 16cc dish for 9.5:1 CR. Cryo-treated to strengthen ring lands, cryo-treated rings, cryo-REM treated wrist pins.

One of the custom Pauter billet cross-beam rods with wrist pin and piston bottom oiling, after cryo-REM. Somewhere in my gallery are some before pics so the surface difference can be seen if desired.

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01463.JPG

And the forged stroker crank, after cryo-REM treatment.

I'm working very closely with the builders. I see them at least once a week. They build Outlaw race cars for Steve Petty and Tim Lynch. One thing that impresses me is they won't try to do things they can't do well. They outsourced the block sleeving and head porting. Oh, I forgot to post pics of the heads...

Your scarin' me Brian! :D

Don't worry ('til next year anyway!)

No way it's going to be together for SSHS6.

And I don't plan to put a cage in it.

Marauderjack:burnout:

Building the Mac-daddy of all mod motors. Even the engine builders would like to snatch up my goodies for their race cars! Only thing I can think of that I didn't upgrade is the rocker arms and lifters. The Jesel rockers are about $100 each ($3000/set) and brand new stockers are $300/set. Almost all the race cars, some up around 1200-1500 RWHP are still using the stockers with no problems so I couldn't justify that expense.

My current engine is already promised to another member.

Heads back from porting, hardened seats and guides (nickel-bronze), setup for 1mm oversize valves on both intake and exhaust:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01500.JPG

Combustion chambers:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01497.JPG

Intake ports:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01499.JPG

Exhaust ports:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01498.JPG

I had intended for them to do some mild bowl work and blend the new seats but they went all out and even cut down the guides.

They still need to get flow numbers so cams can be spec'd, then they go to the cryo-treatment shop for ceramic coating the chambers, exhaust ports and valve faces, dry film lube (teflon coating) valve stems and cam saddles, thermal disperant coating outside surfaces. The heads and valves get cryo'ed, the springs get cryo-REM, the rockers get REM polished.

I think I know what would look reeeally good on that motor.

Nice job! Keep the pictures coming!

Yeah, but it wouldn't fit under the hood! I'll probably go back to the current ProCharger D1 setup for awhile, then maybe change to a Kenne Bell later. I try not to change too many things at once for two reasons: if I change multiple things 1) I can't do before/after performance comparisons and 2) if I create a problem it's harder to diagnose.

No. Big bore stroker will go from 281 (4.6) to 324 (5.3).

Yes.

I believe Eric and Matt got their cars on the cover of a 'stang magazine last month.

I hear ya Brian. My new motor is in the car. Now for the long tubes and a complete new fuel delivery/return system being worked on now. Then for the tuning (ughhh). Never ends, does it buddy:shake: .

It's been on the balancer, here it is getting drilled for weight addition:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01602.JPG

Two slugs of tungsten on this end (one on each of the first two counterweights) and one on the other end. The slugs go in, then get a bead of TIG welding around the edges to keep them in place. Man, this makes me nervous after all the cryo treatment and REM polishing.

Brian, if you are using a MMR pump, it wont build oil pressure until the engine starts. It will be pointless to crank it over to build pressure.

FordNut

They very slightly chamfered the oil holes in the crank

Pressed in the tungsten slugs (I said wron earlier, it was only 1 in the front, two in the back instead of vice-versa):

Fitting the rings by filing the end gaps to size:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01614.JPG

The deck on the Darton MID-sleeved block looks so strange:

All 8 of the cryo-REM treated Pauter cross-beam billet rods:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01616.JPG

Here's one of the coated bearings showing the oil hole to lube wrist pins and underside of pistons (cylinder walls, oil rings, etc). Didn't take another pic of the squirt holes that squirt oil on the bottoms of the pistons to cool them.

Builder says he'll have it together this week, so I gotta take the rest of the pieces to him.

Moroso aluminum oil pan:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01618.JPG

Internal baffles:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01619.JPG

I wanted the engine to be black anyway so I had it painted with thermal disperant paint. I laid it next to a standard Marauder pan and measured, it should fit. My only concern is the kicked-out sump getting in the way of the starter or headers during install.

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01620.JPG

The Canton windage tray had to be modified to clear the DSS main girdle.

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01621.JPG

Timing cover is the early style. It was recommended by Kenne Bell so I went ahead and changed even though my single-bolt tensioner style has never been a problem. I also got it painted with the thermal disperant coating:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01622.JPG

As well as the valve covers:

Very Nice very Nice...
Thanks again for the headws up about the Cyro....

I have to say you a certainly going that one step further...
You motor is gonna be awesome....
maybe once my motor geets old a tired....(100,000mi+)
I'll looking into doing more extreme setup such as yourself...

...but for now...This round of upgrades is gonna be a killer combo for me...
hell I been up to Pococno International Raceway and have ran Lambo's, Ferrari's etc... The handling mods have worked great...they were pissed I was keeping up in the corners and beating them on the straights before....

Now I can't wait for this spring... I gonna give those uptight A-holes something to really cry about.... when they look at their $100,000+ machine and my "glorified Taxi Cab" (as they would say) and it just kick their arse...with ease

The rods are SICK!!!

What are your overall plans?

FordNut
11-29-2006, 12:51 PM
Plans? If I had gone into this with a plan I would have spent about half the $$$ I have in it so far. And been finished months ago.

Really, my tuner always has some kind of comment about his customers that happen to be engineers. We always over-do everything.

I wanted to try the latest technologies on all the pieces of this buildup. Make each piece as good as it can be. Lots of this stuff has been tried but mostly on imports/motorcycles/F1/NASCAR type engines. Most drag racers are still using older, proven, less expensive techniques. The problem with this is I don't have a baseline to compare against. But it ought to make awesome power.

Ya I have same problem here too...
Im also an engineer and so is my dad...

It leads to lots of uneeded spending...
...but things always get done right....

Fordnut,

I'm really impressed by the way you dissected this buildup and the way you rebuilding everything up "overdone".

Luckily i'm not an engineer as i would bankrupt big time !!! :D

Here's the part # for the coated rod bearings I pictured earlier:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01627.JPG

And here are the coated main bearings, they came in today:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01626.JPG

Grooved on the top half with oil holes:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01624.JPG

Look closely and you'll see that the grooves extend into the bottom half:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/5/1/8/DSC01625.JPG

I kind of wanted them grooved all the way around to improve oiling to the rods/wrist pins/squirt holes. Builder was afraid that would bleed off too much oil pressure.

FordNut,

Thank you for putting all things possible into your build. BRG Racing is doing similar for my project - all be it well behind your race level project. I am happy 'over-the-top' is contagious.

I will be far behind your power numbers, but you and the over-600 hp crowd are nuts! :) I would soil by britches, crash and likely die with that kind of power. :)

The sleeved block blew head gaskets... twice. Once with a centrifugal and again N/A. So I went to the cast iron Boss5.0, reusing all of the internal parts. No more problems.
