View Full Version : New Top Speed For Me

Greetings all...Today I finally was able to find out what my MM could do on the top side. I had access to a 2+ mile closed courese with nicely banked corners which I shall not name so as to not incriminate the guilty. Got out on the track just as the sun was coming up and made 2 laps slowly working my way up to speed...Then laid into her and DIDNT LET UP FOR OVER A MILE. I took a pic and then BOOM and a big puff of smoke out the rear. I said sure am glad I am still in my 3/36. I let her cruise back down and exited the track. Got out and looked under the MM and could see trans fluid pouring out the tail shaft. The trans rear seal was riding on the drive shaft yoke. I guess that the vibration from the OEM shaft corkscrewed the seal out. After pulling the shaft I could see it had turned blue about 1/4 way around where the yoke was having issues with the output bushing in the tailhousing. Its DEFINATELY time to call Reinhart for a shaft upgrade. I guess my speed was probally155-159 M.P.H. as the needle was literally burried and was bouncing off of the cluster housing. My RPMs never got over 5K in overdrive...You can see the pic in my sig....Oh yaeh before the safety mongers flame away there was no one else on the track at the time....LILALLEYKATT

Nice speed. Too bad you had to tear something up though. I'd really like to see what my Marauder has somewhere like that, so it is safe, and I can't get a ticket for flat out flying.

I will bet you did not have a MMDS

Good run and a good time. There has been a lot of discussion here about drive shaft whip and the resulting probability of failures. Sorry you had to be the proof that it is indeed a problem and makes me glad that my metal matrix shaft is here if not installed as yet. How stable did your Marauder feel at the top end? I don't think anyone has a problem with what ever speed is driven in a close track safe enviroment. At least I hope not. Good luck. Dennis

Get a driveshaft loop to go with that new shaft if you plan on another event like that.
What is your tire's speed rating?

Well first off I want to mention that I spent 3 years in Germany and drove the autobahn every chance I got. I probally have over 10K mi at speeds well over 100M.P.H. I will say that the MM tracked perfectly and did not wander around at all or was it buffeted by crosswinds. I am worry free in stating that 160+M.P.H. will not be any problem in the future...After the DRIVESHAFT LOOP is installed...

I can tell you exactly what happened. The 4R70W trans really can't sustain that kind of driveshaft speed. There are two reasons. The first, is the harmonics of the driveshaft at that speed. The second, is the lack of lubrication to the tailshaft bushing. To fix that, you can do two things. You can switch to the longer tailshaft used in Town cars and Police Crown Vics, and then have your driveshaft shortened to match it. It's a one inch difference. But that one inch makes a big difference in driveline harmonics (which is why the PI's have it). On the tailshaft bushing, it's not force lubed. So it really doesn't have a good lube source. Really high driveshaft speeds, especially for any good amount of time, will wipe that sucker out, just like you did. What you can do for that, is add an external lube ciruit to the tailshaft bushing. Directions on how to do that are in Jerry W's build up articles on the TCCOA site.
When I did the new trans for MadMax, I did both these mods.

I don't understand how this would be a problem???
Surely, your warranty isn't voided just because you were driving the car as fast as it was capable of going, right?

Sal, the Marauders already have/use the longer transmission tailshaft housing and shorter aluminum driveshaft.
A forced lube mod is a good idea, though.

This issue was addressed about 3 years ago, when I sent Dynotech a stock Marauder shaft, and they made the MMDS for my company, and Art car makes a braided steel forced lube kit, fo my company, this post just verifies what we all have known about, that when you exceed the critical drive line speed of the stock OEM drive shaft it will walk out the rear tail shaft bushing, along with extended highh speeds you can also burn out the rear tail shaft bushing with out the FLK

Ah ok. But then the question is.. do they also use the shorter output shaft (not likely)? The ideal setup is the short output shaft with the longer tailshaft. Then again, most people with Marauders won't reach the power level where the weaker long output shaft will break, so really not that big a deal. Maybe just for the 10 second guys.
The external lube circuit is the key.

The tone that you misinterpreted was never meant for you, or any one. I am just saying what a lot of us have known for years, I edited the post to also add the picture.

No, he >modified< the EEC to eliminate the limiter, which would have prevented him from taking his car to that speed. Letting the whole world and Ford know about it by posting about it in a public forum certainly doesn't help your chances of the warranty claim being honored.
There are two problems here regarding the warranty. (Based on my 2006 warranty, and assuming the 2003 warranty isn't different.... and this includes ESP)
1) Modifications to your OEM that result in damage to the vehicle can be cause the repair to be denied as a warranty claim. Like removing the speed limiter such that you cause the transmission to fail under a sustained WOT run the factory never intended the car to withstand.
2) Driving the vehicle in an abusive manner. This is arguable, but admitting you took the car up to 150+ for a sustained time, even on a track, is considered an "exhibition of speed" which I seriously doubt any Ford service rep will consider normal use of the car
Is the car drivable? I have a suggestion I don't necessarily want to offer in public. Send me a PM, Al.

Oh yeah its all good. I just tapped the original seal back in reinstalled the shaft- topped off w/ ATF and eased on to the house. I got a new seal and installed it. I looked at the tailhousing bushing and it did not look to hammered -blue ect...I am gonna do what Mr Reinhart suggests. I have to attend our national covention in Orlando next week and I am gonna try to get the car to him If he can see it. It should make it...

Figures.......Someone has to 1 up my avitar!:D
Its good to know what a slightly modified MM is capable of top end wise. Next time you run your MM at the "track", please keep us informed.
One of these days I will mod the MM and remove the limiter. When I do, I will update my avitar, and get a 200mph speedo too:baaa: Should be fun!

He didnt post his full name, address, phone number, and License plate # for us to view. And who here would rat him out to Ford? :nono: Its a part of the game to bend the rules, not to play by them.
Also, being a former service advisor for LM, They would have no problem performing warantee work. As long as the ford rep doesnt see it as being a "heavily modded" car (IE : BLOWER, UPGRADED REAR/DRAG RADIALS, etc). Ford reps are fawking morons... Proove it happened otherwise.

And who here would rat him out to Ford? :nono: Its a part of the game to bend the rules, not to play by them.Well, it's already happened to us, at least one of us. It was a while back, but a member here went to his dealership for warranty service, and was confronted by some posts snipped from our board. The reality is that there are no secrets on the Internet, you are responsible for everything you post. Maybe you should take a peek at "who's on-line" and see who is sharing our 411. It's under "quick links", last option of the list.
Right now as I type this, there are 14 members and 33 "guests" visiting. I check every once in a while, and having twice the number of "guests" on board as registered members seems to be routine. Also, look at what they are doing...Searching our archives...Why? Who are they? I don't really know.
My advice is if you want privacy, don't post your achievements.

I have no intention of making ford warranty this deficiency because I still wont be able to follow the #8 car and draft should the need arise and the need seems to arise more often than not. Calling Reinhart now...

That's faster than the car is capable of going, at least the way Ford sells it. If it was going over 125mph, it's been modified, and I'm sure Ford wouldn't hesitate to void the warranty on it.
