I just bought some JL Audio 6 x 9's to replace the rear factory speakers. I am looking for a fuller sound as the previous owner kept the factory sub as a souvenier.:censor: Will these fit where the 6 x 8's were or will it be a hassle. I don't want to have to cut into the rear deck to make them fit. Any info would be appreciated.

From experience.... no they will not fit without some cutting. Been there... done that... don't want the t-shirt. You might be able to mount them from underneath but you'll have to drill new mounting holes and part of the speaker will be covered.

Well...that's the last time I trust one of those "will it fit" programs on ebay. If I have to bottom mount it so be it, I definately don't want to chop up the rear deck. we'll see what happens. Thanks for your help.

If you still can, return the 6x9s you are just asking for trouble.

I can return them (minus s&h). The merchant charged fifteen dollars so sending the speakers back will end up costing me thirty bucks. These are nice 6 x 9's and would hate to give 'em back. I was going to call around and see if someone in my neighborhood can install them the right way for a decent price before I begin to mess with it.

Go to Best buy and get a set of yellow plastic 6x8 to 6x9 adapters.

Not too expensive. I forget how much they actually are though.

They fit your stock holes, and in turn your new speakers connect to them.

They only add an inch or so to the depth.

Thanks Cruz, I'll head over there in the morning. I've got plenty o' room under there with just a donut spare underneath it.

So, with said adapters, they will have to hang from under the panel? If so, wouldn't part of the speaker be covered affecting sound and make it worse then stock?

I ask because I have a great pair of 6x9s that I found impossible to install without cutting the panel (not an option for me).

Thanks

If you have the factory head unit in still, you're not going to get a 'fuller sound' as the factory head unit "chokes" the bass and directs it more to your missing sub woofer.

Chopping up the rear deck wasn't too bad, you don't have to remove that much metal. Even if you make a mess it's covered.

no, the adapters allow top mounting

also, bottom mounting them does interfere with the speaker suspension or anything else and will work just fine. All U have do is drill new holes. The factory head units provide no bass information to the rear speakers for some strange design reason. Switching to 6x9's will not help you in this regard.

I am assuming you mean does not interfere.

Also, I am dissapointed with the stock speakers but I don't want to make the system too complicated or expansive.

What do you think about putting in my 6x9s in the front doors where I where the factory head unit does provide bass information and a new pair of 6x8s in the rear for better high and mid sounds?

For those who understand this stuff:

Would such a set up even fit (6x9s in the front doors with the adapters from Best Buy)?

Would it be worth the time and money? (Sometimes it is better to go all the way with something or doing nothing at all.)

If such a set up seems too mix and match, what 6x8s do you all recommend? I know that some members are using Infinities but I cannot find the part numbers for them.

Thanks ya'll.

Go see/feel a pair for yourself.

The beveled interior ring design is appropriate for the adapter.
They do not cover the new speaker in anyway.

I have used them.;)

Not on my MM, but my olds that had those old old school 4x8's.

Yes I meant that bottom mounting the speakers will cause no interference(pardon my butchering of the English language it's been a long day).

I don't think that 6x9s in the front doors would make much of difference without totally dynamatting the door. It's not a big deal to use 6x9s in the rear and 6x8s in the front That's the set up I have in my car. I owned a pair of perfectly good Soundstream SPL 6x9s already and the quality far exceeded the OEM speakers so I swapped them out.

asking for good brands of 6x8's will elicit alot of strong opinions. Personally, after auditioning Boston, Pioneer, and Alpine, I went with Directed Audio Studio Series S680s. They sonically matched the 6x9s I installed the best. Bottom line is that just about any pair of quality 6x8s will outperform and be a drastic improvement over the OEM models. They are a snap to change also.

Don't be afraid to experimant and realize that these speaker swaps we are discussing are easy and require little effort.

My Boston 5x7's fit perfectly in the doors and rear deck. Must be 5x7's and 6x8's the have same 4 screw hole pattern?

I suspect big magnet 6x9's in the doors might have clearance issues/problems with door mechanisims (regulator, etc.). A 6x9 would need a very shallow magnet height (in the doors), I doubt there is much to gain over a quality 5x7 or 6x8.

As has been stated, the 6x9's in the rear deck would be fine but they need the unfiltered bass, or you won't gain anything.

I still don't have a game plan. :depress:

I have a great pair of 6x9s that I will install via adapters tomorrow in the rear deck. However, from what I understand, it will be a waste of time to install them there since there will be no bass going to them.

What 6x8s do ya'll recommend for the fronts? I installed a good set of 5x7s all around but they seem even worse then stockers because of their size. I honestly feel that the bigger 6x8s give more depth than 5x7s.

Audio folks, opinions are greatly appreciated.

I don't see where you said if you had the factory radio. It is way underpowered to drive any quality speakers. The OEM speakers are made very efficient to sound "good" to mainstream users. My Boston speakers are superior to the OEM's but they need much more power to appreciate the difference. JL makes good speakers, so if you use them for the rears you can match them with JL fronts.

I still have my Factory Sub and Amp. It is only taking up space. If you are interested, send me a PM.

I like the factory head unit and plan to keep it. With that said, can you recommend a plan to improve around it? I don't have JLs.

Too many options are not good for people like me.

Thanks

Well... I ended up going a completely different route. I had a 10" kicker solobaricL5 in a sealed sub enclosure put in along with a Fosgate 250m amp powering it. I have to say it sounds wayyy better than I thought it would for the price (under $500 installed) and I still have plenty of trunk space with the box tucked in next to the spare on the rear deck.

What they are saying is true, it seems like the radio has a crossover that only allows high mids thur the door and rear mounted speakers, 6x8's or 5x7's, I had disconnected the sub-unit and there was no bass! even thou I replaced the door and rear speakers with expensive Rockford/Fosgate 6x8's.
But better door and rear speakers will add better sound even if you cut for the 6x9's you will have better high's and mid's. I cut 6x9's for my rear speakers only so when I replace my head unit the better speakers will handle the higher watts. Do it.
P.S. I Have installed an 10" Rockford/Fosgate subwoffer in the rear with a new power amp sounds great, I will post pictures soon of some of my work, check my profile for new photo's soon.

I hate to sound like a broken record but... you do NOT need 6X9's in the rear. If you're looking for fuller sound, don't start at the rear of the car. Always get the best speakers in the front. The rears are for anbience only in any real istening environment. For a nice system to start with, put great components in the front doors, a single sub like a 10" in a sealed box and get a four-channel amplifier and run it three channel. Use radio power for the rears and just drop in a pair of 5X7 coaxials. Oval speakers by their very design are not efficiant at all. And don't get me started about the square Kicker woofers. Whoever thought of those needs to be whipped with a rubber hose.

Ususally a agree with Kenny ^^^. But... Use 6x8's in the rear so they SEAL. Also, wouldn't hurt to use some foam baffles behind those 6x8's so the pressure from the sub doesn't present through the rear cones and cause distortion.
And Kenny, Kicker solo's are great! If you use them in a Band Pass!!!!!! :beatnik:
