We will all need a bit more detail.
Were you driving? What happened?
Any Pop? Bang? Sputter??
How was the volt meter?
Could have been a timing chain???
How many miles on her?

Did you recently fill the fuel tank? Water in fuel?????
Did it restart, or even turn over?
Did you have electrical power.
What part of the country are you in?

Are you trying to say that it stalled but started right back up and is fine now? What kind of help are you looking for? Dennis:snoopy:
I gather the car is running OK now?
When you refilled the car did you click the fuel dispenser lever a lot and try to get the last drop in the tank?
I remember reading somewhere on the board that's a no no and can cause problem with fuel delivery to the engine.
See if you can recall what you did.

I always fill mine to filler tube capacity and have had no issues. Anyway, maybe a bit of water in the fuel.
Could it be Ethonol? Mine ran a bit funny when I filled up in Virginia with Ethenol added.
Is the gas cap on properly?
Hopefully is was just one hiccup, that you won't experience again.
Glad to hear it was able to be re-started and got you home.
Any "Check Engine" light, indicating a code was set?

same thing happened to mine when i just got it. I've noticed that if I dont' give it enough gas she hesitates almost. NEver really had the problem again. Same thing happens in my dads '95 F-150. The 150 has 240,000 miles on it and still going strong. My dad got it fixed. I think he said it was a sensor or something

The only trick now is to see if through a code.
If you know of a place that will plug in for free and see if there is code in the EEC....DO IT.
Far from that, even mine stalls on occation. For me it's all about the tune, fuel, air, and humidity when these strange things happen. :dunno:

Maybe IAC valve?

You know? If it hasn't had its 30,000 mile maintenance, maybe the Throttle Body needs a good cleaning. I noticed a HUGE improvement after my 30 K maint. It was listed on the bill as 'Performance kit' AKA: Throttle Body Cleaner...
Be sure to get the right stuff, but that could help A LOT in what you describe. I suspect the previous owner did not have this done before you got the car.
Don't worry too much Bro. If you are terrified, take it in for it's scheduled maintenance at a Lincoln/Mercury Dealer and be prepared to pay about $350 for what is listed in the manual.
I sure hope all this helps...

If you don't get a check engine light, I don't think you'll have any code(s)stored.

Car Moods?

I have found that a combination of turning the steering wheel while accelerating slightly then backing off will cause the idle to run up and down and most times shut the engine down!!:argue:
I think it has more to do with the IAC not reacting quickly enough??
It is much more prevalent with the blower!!

so if I take it to the dealer they should be able to find out for me, but they are going to charge me up right?

If the car hasn't stalled again and the dealer can't reproduce the problem, all you'll get for your trouble is a bill for their diagnostic time and you won't know anything more than you do now. If the stalling comes back, make a note of what you were doing: how fast? turning left or right? braking? was it raining at the time? anything you can tell us (or your mechanic of choice)...

This behavior sounds remarkably like doing donuts to me. During similar behaviors, I have had the same results.
I don't necessarily think there is something wrong with tuttw1957's car. Here's why. My MM has 40,300 miles and with stock programming has stalled 3 times in it's four years. Not that this is the end of the world or anything but I remember a thread way back when we said Ford set the idle speed too low for these cars (probably due to eek out an extra mile per gallon).
He said his cut out while at a light. I'm assuming he was idling in drive. My car idles at a mere 550 rpm in drive with no A/C on. But mind you I'm in Florida so I use A/C very often which bumps idle to about 600 rpm.
tuttw1957, what does your car idle at in drive?
Was your A/C off?

Same thing happened to me 3 weeks after I got the car. The computer sent the wrong siginal at the wrong time. I had the dealer hook it up for a computer on wheels and 15 minutes later is was fine for the next four years.

At 32,000 miles, I would just change the Fuel Filter.
If it has never been changed, now is the time to do it.

well I really don't know what MY car idle in because I really don't know aht that means, I'm new to this whole thing , so if you help me learn I will listen to everything you have to say, and no the a/c was not on.
Definitely Have That Checked Out. Go Directly To The Dealer, They Have Answers. But It Is Going To Cost. Remember, Its A "mm" These Cars Do Not Belong In A Regular Mechanics Shop. "good Luck"!!!

Go to the dealer and have them check it out. Mine did the same thing and it was a low charge output alternator which they replaced. Then ever so often it would do it with the wheel fully turned in one direction and tapping on the gas. Pop it in N, start her right back up and keep on moving.
