View Full Version : Granatelli COP and Connector group buy

I have received several calls about Granatelli coil connectors as well as COP set up so if there is enough interest I will set this up, every one is at SEMA this week so it will be next week before I can get pricing, but just keep in mind if you buy just the connectors and then later on decide to buy the coils they come with the connectors.

Since there are 3 different vendors who offer SCT stuff, it sounds ok.
And Wes offered the GMS stuff before FIT, too.

I sent a PM to Greg (maraudernkc) asking about another group buy, but no response.
I started a new thread to see where to buy these. Good interest but not much help on where to buy inexpensively.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=31452
So I decided to contact one of our quality vendors, Dennis at Reinhart Automotive.

I was under the impression that the Granatelli COP set doesn't fit the Marauder application, due to fit issues with the coil covers.
Also, that the Granatelli COP set was not any better then the stock COP.:shake:
This all was stated in another thread already.:help:

I think you are misinformed the Granatelli cop fits a 03 Cobra so it will fit the Marauder, one that was tested here in Jacksonville gained 30 RWHP. Will a N/A car gain this much, no it will not, any time you can make the spark hotter you are going to have improved cylinder combustion efficiency. This mean better fuel economy and more power.
The Coil boots and connectors used with stock OEM coils have shown a HP gain as well, so to each his own. I was asked to help and I am trying.

They fit fine... don't know about the coils.
I think previous issues may have been poor cover sealing techniques, allowing moisture to get in there.
If they are not really better, they at least won't stretch out when you change plugs!

Correct me if I'm wrong but the coils in the post above are for SOHC application?? Won't work on our DOHC engines!!:shake:
Also, I think Greg said the Granatelli coils require reversing polarity and not certain how that is done?? Hope you don't have to cut and solder wires??

The coils pictured are for a 2v, but they are available for the 4v.
The 4v coils fit under the coil covers on some cars, but not others. I believe one example where a spacer is required is with the Ford GT type coil covers.
The polarity swap is done by pulling the wires out of the connectors using a paper clip or pin extractor, then swapping positions and plugging the pins back into the connectors.

Are some people having a problem with their stock coil packs?
If so, what kind of problem and description would that be? Misfires?
I read in another post, other thread, that a dealership can check the stock coils to see if there working. Any one know how this is done? Does a dealer have to do it or can any decent mechanic do it?
Thanks....just looking for more info. on this subject as this topic has come up several times now.

I have replaced my OEM coil pack connectors on two of my three Marauders, with the Granatelli connectors, and both times, minor (but irritating nonetheless) ignition problems have been resolved.
For the money involved, one cannot lose out. Best to be assured that all the voltage is getting through to the spark plug, rather than wonder if it's not.
I cannot immediately prove that this mod makes any improvement at all, but neither can I prove that it does not.
For the money involved, it's worth it, IMHO. BTW, I have spent more dollars investigating less impressive mods, but the fact that three vendors here have offered them to us as a "group buy" on this mod, I have to consider that there is something behind it all, other than my own observations. Three responsible vendors have endorsed this mod, even Zack asked me if I have a spare set on hand for him...Go figure?

Sooo...this is another feel good mod? These have been on the market for awhile, has anyone gotten any numbers on these yet?
I do not have any noticable ignition problems. No problems - no known gain... why do I need this?
ALL the vendors would sell us synthetic snake oil to rub on our tires if we believed it may decrease the tire wind resistance.

Charlie, I doubt there is any performance gains for the connectors, but the quality difference and "beefiness" is noticeable.
I believe someone posted up a side by side pic of OEM vs the Granetelli's a while back, make your own decision.

Hey bud,
There is no question which ones look cooler. I've seen the pics. The COP connectors look great compared to the ball-point-pen-spring the OEM coil packs come with.
Dennis,
With the facility you have, have you, or could you run a test? Dyno, real world data logging, track times before and after?

Maybe it is a feel good mod. As far as dyno numbers, I haven't seen anything on mm.net, but some of the other Ford performance forums have posted gains. Not sure how much of it I believe though. The only thing I've heard here was some comments about improved idle and off-idle performance, fixing a minor stumble, other non-quantifiable improvements.
You as well as most of us probably don't need it, it's more a matter of want it.
Yes, vendors will sell us what we demand as consumers. I recall that Dennis used to recommend regular copper plugs. Many potential customers requested iridium plugs so he started offering them. Later on, he was criticized for selling the iridium plugs since there was no performance improvement with them. He wasn't selling them for performance reasons, he was selling them due to customer demand.

When I first encountered the G-COP mod, I considered some field testing for positive-negative results before and after. My first set cost me 189.00 from Summit, but we have brough that cost down considerably by the power of the group buy. Thus, now that the cost of the mod has settled in, it serves no purpose to spend my time and money on a dyno, or, at a race track, to find out one way or the other.
I have installed the G-COPs on a supercharged Marauder and a N/A Marauder, and I am pleased with my SOTP results. Perhaps it is just a "feel good" mod, but it does that well.
Tim...The only way I can think of to detect a failing/weak coil pack, is to start with a single fresh coil pack and move it around from cylinder to cylinder, until something changes. Data log and track your performance, a weak coil pack will rise to the surface. Tedious, but effective.

You do not need to cut any thing you do have to swap the wires around on the conectors..
Is swapping wires around on the connectors still mandatory to make these work? Or is this speculation since it was before any info was available?

My understanding is that these are the new version coils which have been revised to eliminate the need for wiring swap and spacers for the covers.

I honestly feel 15 RWHP on a N/A car is stretching it, but again, you have to consider all the mods you curently have, you are only going get a certain amount on a N/A car, for example if you have a N/A Marauder at lets say 300 RWHP will you gain 15 more I doubt it. I would like to see a before and after dyno pull, now on the SC cars I have seen those numbers, using a MSD and I have seen other tuners post numbers close to this range, with the coils and boots.
