Well, I took my MM into the dealership two weeks ago to get the hood/roof/trunk repainted under factory warranty. Like others on here, the topside of the car's paint was "cracking".

I spoke with the paint shop directly. They inform me that the car's topside has been repainted before and that the rood has been repainted at least 5 times!!

I bought the car (03) "new" from Lake City Ford in Idaho in 1/05. It has 168 miles on it. Now I know why I got it got 10K under MSRP !!!

In talking with the paint shop, D&N, I feel confident that they will correct the problem the right way. Upon final inspection, they noticed two small bubbles in the paint, so it was back to square one !! They are re-doing the roof. With all of our rain lately, that delayed things. I should have the car back this Mon. or Tue. [/end rant]

You got your car 10K under MSRP because dealers couldnt rid themselfs of these cars. Plus, the rebates were upwards of $3k at the time you probably bought yours.

I should know this, because i worked for LM at that time :D

Fords robot painters suck. No new ford gets more than a layer of paint

It had 168 miles on it when I picked it up from the docks in 2/05. All the painting was done to the car when the dealership had the car, and failed to tell me this at the time of purchase.

Forgive me I am not following this too well. Why would the dealer repaint the car 5 times before selling it? Maybe they just had nothing better to do and thought they should practice spray painting on a brand new un-sold MM? I suspect the current information you are receiving is bogus.

hbarrett,
Apparently there was a defect from the factory (that numerous others, including some on this board have experienced), causing the paint to crack. The dealership who had the car in Idaho apparently just had the top resprayed and didn't correct the problem. I'm guessing the cracks kept coming back so they just resprayed every time the cracks came back, which would account for the multiple layers of black/clear found by my local paint shop, which is very reputable.

This is a two stage paint. Do you mean that they painted over the original paint and clear coat, without removing the clearcoat, and did this five times? Wow! This is incredible.

So if a car has an issue and is repaired before it is ever sold, the Dealer must eat this cost themselves?

I dont know about that, but my experience with dealers is that they would rather hide a defect on a new vehicle until a sale is made, then they are happy to provide repairs for just about anything under the buyer's factory warranty. I don't think there is incentive for them to be repairing unsold new vehicles unless, of course, there is obvious visible damage preventing a sale. But repainting a new unsold vehicle five times before there is a buyer for it sounds absurd to me. I can't even imagine the factory authorizing that, but who knows!

YEP !!!! The paint shop notified the dealership of this. When they started sanding the rood, they found clear, black, clear, black, clear, etc. That is some crazy $h!t. The paint shop has nothing to gain by revealing this info. Another friend of mine once said it looked like the hood had been repainted, but I thought that was next to impossible, since I bought the car new. I guess he was right.

I'm going to check into what can be done, if anything, for the dealership failing to reveal a "known" defect in the car prior to me purchasing it. Its :bs: if ya ask me.

That is unbelieveable that a dealer would paint it that way, totally crazy, but anything is possible. I bought a new 95 SS Impala from a first class dealership in Atlantic City, NJ in 1995. Got it back home in Delaware only to find that very poor body work and repainting had been done to one of the four doors. Spoke with the dealership, and Chevy customer service. They would not agree to take the car back in exchange for another, and were not required to divulge the defect to the buyer. I was told by Chevy that many cars going down the assembly line get pulled for paint and body defects, and are fixed quickly, and sometimes not too well, off the side of the line. My door was redone by a local Chevy dealer, and paid for by the AC chevy dealer. The repair was perfect.
