View Full Version : Oil Pan Removal
What is the deal with an oil pan removal on these cars? The shop manual outlines supporting the engine and removing the lower crossmember, suspension, etc.. The shop doing my body repairs is planning to replace the pan (sublet work) because it is dented but they are saying a full engine removal is the way to go...sounds ridiculous to me, and I dont know if I want just anyone pullin the motor for this...

...drop the crossmember...then drop the pan...I think somebody is trying to get you to support their new swimming pool in the backyard...IMHO....

Is this true? Just remove crossmember?

It's not really that simple, the engine is mounted to the crossmember so you need to support the engine. The steering rack needs to be removed, the lower control arms are bolted to it and need to be removed, and then I think you can unbolt the crossmember. You will need an alignment after everything is reassembled.

Thanks. I need some front tires and flags anyway
It's a huge job regardless of either method

Just be happy you don't have a Northstar motor. Guaranteed leaky oil pan in every single one and you also have to pull the engine to fix it.

What he said.
My personal preference is pull the engine.

Is it not posible by removing the trans and raising the engine

Sure that's possible...you just removed the engine.

Yea but then you wouldnt have disconnected the two dozen things that would be required to remove the engine. Pulling the trans and two motor mount nuts is allot less labor than completely removing the engine or the subframe. I have never done it on a panther, but speculating, jacking the motor an inch or two should be enough to slide the pan out.

So 3 ways. Remove engine. Remove cross member. Or what I did. Jack the motor disconnect pan let it drop onto the cross member( that's all it can do) hard part is removing the tube inside the pan so you can remove the gaskit and replace. Just make sure befor you seat the new gaskit it does not crack or damage. The space is tight and you have to work the gaskit in
Hah! This is one old thread! Just as an aside the new oil pan is still in the garage hangin on the wall... ;)
