Just back from SSHS6,things were lookin pretty good.Temp was a cool and breezy 55,and cooling down.
Break outs have been a problem all afternoon.I'll let the group that was there tell how they did.
I did manage to see the Trilogy 1 set his personal best,I think, a 10.65,and thats after poppin a head gasket at about 3/4 track.
I'll have pics to post later.
Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet anyone, well I did manage to waddle over and talk to 1 guy, hopefully next time I'll get a chance to meet everyone.

1st run, TNT, no traction whatsoever with the Nittos. Spun for the first 60 feet or so. Got sideways right then sideways left at about 1,000 feet. Scared the ___ out of me. I was blowing coolant. I was a slipping and sliding on my own coolant!
2nd run. Bracket first round. Better traction. Feathered the throttle. Still shakin from the first run. Won. Lost coolant though but had a "diaper" around overflow tank.
Third run. Hooked pretty good but went downhill from there. I ran a 12.29 in second gear. I forgot to shift into "D"rive in the water box. Saw the shift light blaring in my face. Heard the rev limiter, hell the whole track heard the rev limiter. Didn't react. What an idiot! Ran 98 in the 1/8 and 98 in the 1/4. Lost coolant again. 8 hours and three passes. That was it for me.

Hey Glassman-----at least you left under your own power:)
I was telling a few we needed to start a new thread--"ON THE TRAILER".
The Marauders came to compete and had a great showing ------NO one can say the Marauders aren't serious players in the heavyweight ranks.
It was one Hell of a Show----- Mercury was in serious contention for "Big Dog"(potentially)-----Marty was putting down crazy power and unfortunately snapped an axle ----- Jerry was on a record run and blew a head gasget and gave the track crew plenty to do cleaning up a 1000 feet of track(and still ran a 10.65), Brian (Fordnut) as always made some serious runs but unfortunately broke.
This Heavyweight shootout is alive and well!! A great showing also from the Mopar crowd-------I even think we had one guy on a test drive w/ a SRT8 Magnum 'cause it had the window sticker along with the added mark-up sticker.
Cold weather makes lots of power but poor traction made it tough to put down consistant runs. When the sun finally warmed the track up a bit there were alot of frustrated bracket racers who finally started to hook up.
GREAT TIME!!!!!! It was great to see the regulars from the Southern Marauders and meet many of the folks who traveled from around the country to participate in a great event.
Jerry Barnes----You're my hero:beer: and I'm not suckin up------I already spent my $$ on Trilogy 131-----but you came all the way to GA and put on one heck of a show---I bet you felt like you were back in Michigan by the way you were skating around that track!!!!!
Thanks to all.

I'll second that Knuckles.....For Glassman to get out and run her again after that first whooptie doo down the track took stones.
Brian was making serious power, and getting quicker/better with each run...he will be back in notime I am sure.
2 Things stuck out in my mind..........
1. When a Marauder made big noise it had E.T.'s to back it up.....
2. Seeing Dennis R., and Jerry B. show up and run well without once coming off as a "vendor" reminds me of Todd (TAF). Don't want to stir the pot here - Not trying too. Just want to say we are all enthusiasts here in this forum, first and formost. At least thats my impression of everyone I met today at the shootout.
Way to go participants. Hopefully it will only get better from here.
Best regards,
Marauderman

Throughly enjoyed the event--seeing everyone again--took my daughter and grandaughter(7) --both just loved seeing all the cars that look like Grandpa's.....
I too had the same problems--..track was not kind to anyone....well,,ecept for maybe Dennis....what is your secret anyway... WTG....
WE all lost alot of track time with track breakdowns ....but endured anyway......definately seemd like there were more Marauders this year.... 3 for the Carolina Group as well---Cool!.......again-great to see folks and too bad it had to end ..........till the next time.........

The air was great running on asphalt is a challenge, most tracks are concrete, seeing the track guys walking on the track like a bowling lane is disturbing.
The power is there I ran a 60' of 1.690 while spining.!
Very frustrating to spin on every single run.

I will tell you this. When my car broke, I walked down the track and thought my sneakers would get pulled off by the VHT. I think the motor carnage and the fact that all the street radials were running on the track hurt a lot.
Also, why do people with street radials drive straight through the water box?

Do you know who was in the Silver Birch? Red calipers, front bumper plugs, tinted windows - if I wasn't sitting here right now, I would think someone had my car down there. But it is sitting quiet in the garage right now.

It was great to see everyone at the shoot out. The best turn-out in 3 years by far. I hope the event will continue again next year. Sorry to see the breakdowns with Marty, Jerry and Brian.
Ran a personal best of 12.38 at 112 mph last night. But, had difficulties with traction during the day and had to let up several times. Not nice to get sidewise half way down the track ask Steve. Couldn't adjust to the pro-tree light. Also, did a burn-out in 1st and did not shift into D. Surprising how quickly you bounce off 7,000 rpm in 1st gear after the green light.

Snapped a 31 spline axle like a candy cane! Thankfully we were running C clip eliminator axles or the car would have been torn up. Other than the axle which is obviously toast, bent the brake caliper brackets and that is about it.
I will need to step up even more and likely will go with a 35 spline set up. Anyone want to buy a 31 spline spool with a a third of a pass on it? It is brand new!

Marty a better question would be: why would any racer, regardless of the tires they have drive thru the water??? A burn out only removes water from the REAR tires.
You are wetting the track with your front tires, it seems to me if your going to use the water box you should drive around it and back into it.

Thanks for the pictures this was one of the fastest times there, for the Marauderss short of JB 10.6, not bad on 9PSI and I drove the car there and it has 58K on the clock, NO nitrous and a stock motor, the biggest issue was traction, I am installing M/T this week and that will solve that problem. I feel the car will go low 11,s

I had a blast, as usual at this event. My car was awesome. Put a 14.0 on the window, and ran that number all day. New best, 14.021. Slowest in competition was 14.062. Driver error cost me in the end, did the premature acceleration thing in the "round of 6." Can't complain though as my lights ALL started with a .0. Worst (besides the red) was a .063, best was a blistering .001. Good to see old friends and make new ones. If you get the chance, hang with Al for a while, he's a gas. Went to the awards gig, they have a date (reserved track) for next year. I thanked Mr. BiSShop on behalf of all of us. Onlu down side for me is my cost of racing has just doubled. The lovely Mrs. Casey tried it for the first time. As we say in Rhode Island, "She's belly hooked." Too many good memories to write them all here right now. Sorry my good friend Smokey wasn't there this year. I'll be updating my timeslip now.

I had a great time! Defyant Marauder was running great. My best run of the day was a 12.041 @114.66. That was backed by a 12.080 @ 114.60.
I wish I could combine a couple of these slips! Of particular note, the 12.080 run had an R/T of .099 and a 60' of 1.476! I must have driven out of the grove. This was an 11 second run, but it was not ment to be. Oh well. :)
The worst run was a wheel spinning 12.25 at 114.52  . Dam water on the track where water did not belong. Oh well again :)

Again excellent time, great to see old friends, some new ones as well.
Steve (Glassman), you've got a real nice car you've got yourself. Those boys up in Atlanta done you right!! Now get a new head gasket and get that beast back out on the track
Tom (Marauderman), great to meet you again, car was looking sharp as ever.
Merc, good to meet you, after our phone conversations and PMs! Man I dont know anyone who has more enthusiasm for racing than you!!
FOr me the day started with a 2hr wait in the staging lanes after some big cars broke big. But then I got to run Marauderman, we both sent the run up in smoke, I stayed in it since it was kind of pointed down the track, pulled a 12.8@112.8mph, damn traction.
Tracked warmed up air stayed fairly cool, we got into brackets (I hate) ran a 12.26@112.5, well great but that was on a 12.35 dial....damn, went again in the run all day, pulled a 12.14@112.x...fastest ever for me by .300, and thats without the TC...and 3.55s...then hot lapped it and ran a 12.24@112.x
I had put some C10 to mix with the street pump 93 in hopes of busting out a race tune...trouble with the file prevented that so this was on my street tune.
Let me tell you, for us Southern types, that cold cold air...OMFG....its like adding 50hp!

Oh, shout out to the Casey's!!! Great seeing you again.
Traction, well it was defintiely better in the afternoon thats for sure, soemwhere past 230, I think the track prep was okay, those tires were really cold. I know the first run I didn't throw enough heat into them either.
I ran the Nitto DRs with 16psi cold, I like that much better, normally I drive to the track on the Drs, and they are already warm so its hard to nail down the exact tire pressure as the tire heat keeps causing the pressure to rise, a constant back and forth with the gauge.

I want to thank the Marauder community for attending the event in force - what a great turnout! I'm sorry that there was so much Marauder carnage at this event. You folks are really turning those things up! When you push the envelope, breakage is certainly part of the equation. There were some heavy-hitting Marauders there this weekend. :D
BTW - That is my car #10C lined up against Mr. Reinhart. I got him the first time when he spun off the line. Fate put us together again in the 2nd round after he bought back in and I took myself out with an -0.024 red light. :(
Glenn - With all of the track downtime, we never did get to run that match race. It would have been a good one though. My best time also was a 12.38. :D
It was great to race and socialize with the Marauder folks again. Mark your calendars. It's not a "done deal" yet, but SSHS7 has been tentatively scheduled for November 3rd 2007. I bet we'll see some 9-second Marauders next year.

From the tower I can say the match-ups where great.
The cold weather made for lots of HP and the track came together in the afternoon. I could tell by the amount of double breakouts. I remember Lincons would bring spare rears in years past and could quick change one in 20 min. lol
Great to see some Mopar too.
Hope everyone got home safe. Ya'll had over 20 in the Panther divison.

Merc - You don't know what Impala with bowtie sauce tastes like, cause nobody in the Marauder camp has caught the fastest one before. My car is set up for road racing and autocross. My attention span is longer than 11 or 12 seconds and I go to the SSHS6 events mostly for the parking lot "fellowship" after the race. But I will still be in the low 11s next year. Will it be enough? Bring what you got and let your car do the talking and we'll find out. Words are cheap. You should run it and then brag about it, not the other way around. I don't recall lining up against you this year. What ET did you run anyway?
And I'm not going to come on your sight for a flaming contest anyway. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to come here and piss in your yard. I came here to THANK the Marauders for attending. If you want to get out the boxing gloves, you'll have to find another opponent. I fight my battles on the track.
What ET did you run anyway?
12.29 ET was the best I could manage with track conditions for the day. Don’t get me wrong, I brought my car to the track, talk the crap, and bounce back like the energizer bunny. Trust me, I wanted to line up with you, but the test –n-tune time was limited. I made one run, and then hot lapped to the end of the C class lanes. You know how crazy the day was. I apologize if you are offended in any way. Talk is cheap, I spent over 8,000 dollars in the last 60 days to get my car running the way it was that day. My hotel cost were over $500.00 and gas exceeded 100.00. This event for me was in the planning stages for months. People that know me understand I don't back down from a challenge.
Merc - Have you registered yet? It's just bad form to do all that trash talkin' and not even be registered for the event. ;)

We only use blowers because father ford gave us 281 ci push rod, boy. If we had large displacement blocks I would do what you are doing, but all things are not equal. Oh, by the way, I don't need a blower for bracket racing I held my own without one. I just wanted to race in a different class.

Do they have tread on them? Then they aren't "real racing tires"; at least in the drag racing world. No, I think you will find that those are DOT street legal radials. The ET Streets are psuedo-racing tires.
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/mtt-3012.jpg
Maybe you should try some M/T ET Drags on 15" wheels. Those are real racing tires. With your budget, that shouldn't be a problem. I pulled a 1.731 60-foot time with those at 9:30 AM and a "best of the day" (for me) 60-foot time of 1.716 at 11:00. But then you have to be concerned about breaking hard parts like differentials and axles, so beef them up beforehand.
I appreciate your concern for my car. I was trying to work out the best air pressure combination for my setup. If you can remember the test-n-tune time was limited. I was not able to adjust my setup the night before. I was able to pull a 1.709 60 ft time with short notice.

Hey you tire guys, I was able to make a 1.476 60' on my Nitto DR "street" tires. :D
That would have been a good run if I would have stayed in the "grove"
This is proof that you made this statement and I didn't forge anything. I simply cut out the other paragraphs that were not directed to me. Get your facts together before you make a case. You want to talk about real race tires. Then purchase a real racecar my friend. I don't remember you having one. Building power is a multiple of money. What's in your wallet? I don’t have the funds that Marty or Jerry Barns have, but I can hold my own. I often challenge Sherman (a 11 second marauder) all the time. He has beat me every time, but we have fun. That’s just part of the game with me. Don’t get your panties wet over this thread. Let’s do it again next year. http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/2/3/8/LeadSSled.jpg
This post came off your site. They talk about track conditions also. Just because you have good 60ft times on a time slip does not mean that the complete 1320 ft is all good. It also sounds like you had some problems with the members doing burnouts. That's truly sad, because the majority of the people respected the law.
So , here comes the cheese:
This year was not by far as easy going as years past, it's that simple. I wanted to understand why and share what we found. I am not making any excuses, just stating what we learned.
1. weather - it was friggin freezing - this played havoc with participants, equipment, track crew, and track conditions.
2. weather/participants - I got alot of feedback from folks especially in the late morning who were upset about getting far fewer runs than last year, I asked them when did they arrive, most arrived at or after about 10AM becuase it was so cold in the morning.I reminded them that the track gates opened at 8, the track at 9, now that you are here at 10AM you are already 1-2 hours behind schedule compared to the expectations you had from last year.
3. Weather/equipment - As the track started to hook, the breakage increased, almost every car was spewing water out the exhaust as they launched, creating the situation to take more time to stage folks due to having to mop up the staging area hundreds of times. So if you are already upset from #2, now you are waiting even more....
4. weather/track crew - It was obvious the crew was moving slow, they were the same crew that was out there freezing friday night, coming right back to sub-freezing temperatures on Saturday, if you had hold a wet mop all day, and clean up after 1100 cars, how fast would you be going? Cleanup on track was slow, yes it was, we had one huge mess out there from that antifreeze-down of the upper part of the track, it went all the way down to the last turn off, it turned into something looking like old turkey gravy from the cold. More than once I was told, "you know if there were 5 top fuel cars waiting they would move alot faster..." I agree, but I assure you the contract amount for the event would be significantly different. Most folks wouldn't or couldn't pay that kind of premium fee....so if you are already upset from #2, #3, now you got to deal with #4...
5. weather/track conditions - Most knew that you were going to spin badly in the morning due to the frigid conditions. I know I spun even worse than usual. So what happended is that the folks who got there right at the beginning got a few runs, spun, decided to wait a little for things to warm up, guess what time they started running again? The same time the folks who came later are trying to get their runs.... So if you already sizzling from #2,#3, and #4, let's add #5 now!
6. Even galley slaves get a lunch and a bathroom break, we have a lunch break every year, never an issue, did the same thing this time, but if you were one of those who just fought through all of the above, you're hosed yet again!!! And that's just too much to deal with especially since you paid your money, and you want to have the same expereince as last year(or better)even though conditions between sshs5 and sshs6 were dramatically different.
Now for the folks who want SSHS7:
We always play the "will see" game, with everyone, with a wink and nod, we usually do it. This time it is really up in the air. I know alot of you know Gene Z and I are meeting up for sshs7 discussions. But we have a show stopping problem that the impala community has to get its arms around.
Burnouts in the hotel parking lot, we have been tagged by the hotel, law enforcement is involved, police reports made, and things are no longer humerous. The first time this happened 2 years ago, we covered $2300 dollar in repairs, last year we didn't need it because people were able to control themselves, well this year, there is no one to blame but ourselves, and GASSIT could be wiped out by it. I don't know Gene's tolerance for risk or his club's financial position, but I can not in good conscience not tell him how serious this has become this time. This post is not about naming names, but when we get the final bill on this I would like be able to count on those involved to have the stones to stand up and save this great event from extinction.

What time did you get to the track? The track opened at 9:00. I had 3 passes before Test and Tune was closed. If you only got one run, it's because you weren't there early enough.
I never claimed my car is a race car. It's certainly not. Although not a daily driver anymore, it is titled and driven every week. Still has full interior and every accessory that came on the car is intact and functional. I only meant that if you want to put big power to the ground, you can make your life easier buy buying tires that are maximized for the intended use. I run drag slicks at the drag strip and Kumho V710 autocross tires on an autocross course to optimize what I have to work with. If I wanted a "race car" I certainly wouldn't have started with a 4200 lb. platform whose chassis was designed in 1977. And it's certainly not my intention to take a "my car is better than yours" stance either.
I'm not going to get in a pissing contest with you over who can spend the most money, because it's HOW you spend your money that is important, not how much. Any idiot with a check book can spend wads of cash. That being said, I did spend over $10,000 this summer on new upgrades.. Most of that was the 500+ crank HP stroker motor. But it is still a street car, and always will be. My point is that you aren't the only car owner that knows how to write a check, so you can just get off of that high horse of yours.
And I'm not offended nor do I have wet panties. I'm just playing your game. If you lob one over the net, don't you expect a return volley? I don't mind a little good-natured sparring either, but if you are going to be an inflamatory butt-hole about it, I just won't play anymore. That's fine too. You're the one that started this BS in the first place.
DEFYANT - You must be a better driver than those complaining of traction issues. :D
You can't control the weather guys. It was below 30 degrees on Friday night. There isn't a track surface in the country that would have hooked much better at those temperatures. If you walked the track, you would know that it wasn't due to a lack of traction compound. The track staff did what they could with what they have to work with. It's called "racers luck". The track didn't warm up until late and we were slowed down with multiple track issues because of car breakage. So nobody got as many runs as they would have liked. We did the best we could. We are not professional race promoters with large resources. We're just a little local club trying to put together an event to have some fun. There's always room for improvement, but I think we did a fair job under the circumstances.
I understand you have made your point lets just not start a bomb fire.
Understood. Scottie, one to beam up.

I had the best pass of the event, 11.62 at 117 MPH with a 1.663 60' after that I blew the brand new Nittos away. I dropped the preasure to 14 PSI and still smoked them, I am going with a 15 " rim and M/T thats why sheman ran a consistant 11 all day.

You're right. I apologize for taking the bait. I'm done with this. Merc goes into my "ignore box". I won't let one bad apple spoil the bunch. Sorry for the divergence.

Sorrry for taking so long to comment on the Drag Races at commerce, GA. I had a great time!!!!! It was really great seeing everyone. Meeting all of my old friends really makes the trip worth it!! I also enjoyed meeting some new friends, Todd, Scott, Jason, Mark, Pam, Sherman, his son, etc. It was nice to see Marty and his crew. They are great competitors and I really enjoy that rivalry we have. It was great seeing my old friends Charlie and Mark B. again. Good seeing Dennis!
I want thank the Impala guys/gals for putting on a great event!!!! The track was fantastic, the weather was great and the hospitality was tremendous.
I am very sorry for messing up the track. I had my sights set on getting my record back, but I will have to wait until next year. I was very encouraged by my run and the time. As others hjave reported a 10.65 with a 1.46 60' was very positive. If the car would have held together I would be sipping Diet Coke as we speak. But, the car definately has a high 9's to low 10's run in it without any other changes. But, we are making more changes(smile).
Marty, thanks for all of your friendship and I look forward to seeing you again soon!!
See everyone next year!!!

Controversy aside, I'm sad I missed the event. I'm sorry for those who did not drive away from the event, but broken parts generally equal better parts installed later is what I say. ;)
Wish I could've been there with you guys but couldn't work it out this year.
To my CAM friends Merc Defyant and Sherman looks like we had a great showing. Merc you've always done way more than write checks you've single handedly taught me most that I know about drag racing, in one year I went from total newbie to being able to turn in consistant runs - trust me he knows what he's talking about and walks the walk.
We all have room for improvement that's why we race. If every race was our best time and we never got better there'd be no point. That's why we all come out and gather at the asphalt arena.
Let's also remember us meeting there and being respectful is what keeps 'em open. Not pointing any fingers or joining any fights (nor could I, hell I wasn't even there) just stating that friendly jabs have always been part of the game and keeps that competition going that keeps us coming back.
No need for bad feelings towards each other, the grudges are settled within a range of 1320 feet.
Congrats to all and thank you very much for the pics and videos for someone who couldn't be there.
Edit: sorry for all the typos I was trying to write two things at once!

What kind of 31 spline was that (the Ford limo axle)? Proof safety equiptment (c-clip kit) is well worth the expense. I know I'm dreaming, but I would really appreciate a bolt-in 9" housing.

I'm pretty sure he had the Moser axles. Note that the c-clip eliminator which is currently available makes the parking brake and ABS (I suppose traction control also) inoperable.
A bolt-in 9" which has the MM disc brakes, parking brakes, ABS rings, and mounting hardware would be nice, but the Watts link pivot would have to be added to the pumpkin instead of the axle housing. Might be difficult. MArty mentioned 9" style axle stubs attached to the 8.8" center section as a possibility he's looking into.

That looks like the direction we are going to go.
As far as the C Clip elims, I wouldn't run without them. Not with the power we are putting down. Things could have been a whole lot worse for my friend Jeff if the wheel separated from the car. That s hit scares me and is why Jeff is my test pilot!

Marty, thanks for all of your friendship and I look forward to seeing you again soon!!
Jerry we will race again. I have some ideas for a venue and am seeing what I can set up. Call me when you have a chance and we will chat about it.
Meanwhile, it was great to see you. I had my Trilogy T shirt in the truck and was awful worried I was going to have to wear it while I handed you a case of Diet Coke! Sure glad that didn't happen. That damn shirt gives me hives!! :D

I had a great time overall. It was my first shootout but not my first drag event. I was in staging lanes at 10:15 and did not get a practice run until after lunch. That was a problem for me as I did not know where to class myself as my car is right at that 13.99 cutoff. Next time I'll be in line earlier. First run 14.072, second 14.033, last run (after a long cool down in the lanes)13.972 @ 99.91 mph, a personal best but a breakout.
It was great to see everyone again as it has been a while. Sorry I missed you Willie.

Mark VIII Camp checking-in ... It was great to see everyone again! My best run of the day was 14.132 @ 96.79. Here is a link to some real cool pictures of the SSHS6 event. These are from one of the professional photographers on site. I purchased prints from Steve Gould of the SSHS5 event last year, and was very pleased with the results: http://www.gouldphoto.com/Drag%20Racing%202006/249327 http://www.gouldphoto.com/photos/109618162-L.jpg

Is your MK painted pearl white? I think they are a timeless (and underappreciated) design. 14.132 @ 96 sounds quick for a stock MK VIII. Have you modified anything?

Too bad the (Moser?) 31 spline axles were not up to the task. Can you post a photo of the break? Did you exceed the manufacturer's torque ratings?
Replacing the 8.8" bearing hubs on the end of the axle tubes with 9" hubs and axles would be a good compromise to replacing the whole housing but would require removing the assembly for cutting and welding.

Thanks, GreekGod. The paint color is Ivory Pearlescent with Ivory interior. In stock trim, it ran 15 flat last year. I plan to have FI installed by SSHS7, and be somewhere in the high 11's low 12's. Mods at SSHS6 were: M/T ET Streets drag radials, Custom 2.5" stainless steel exhaust from Todd F., PI single disc 3k stall and transmission work from Steve B., 410's, T-Lok Diff, and SC T-Bird 28 spline Raxles from Scott L., and a dyno tune for the C&L 90mm MAF/cone filter from Aric C.

Well, here it goes. I hope it works. A link to YouTube.com to view the video of my personal best run of 12.38 vs a worked Mustang GT the night of SSHS6 - 11/3/06. I honestly believe this MM can go to low 12.0's with only some trans tuning and tire pressure adjustments and a few other "small things". I burnt the tires all through the 60' and the trans is not shifting firmly. Working on a few details. Now if I can only get the driver to stop making dumb mistakes.
