View Full Version : why should you buy a Vortech Air to Air kit

Over the years I have tried to develop quality performance parts for the Marauder, Kenny Brown started the ball rolling with his conversion package that included the Vortech SC water to air kit, so I designed mine, and the kits were similar, I used a 90 MMLM, in a suck through set up, where the KB used a stock Marauder maf in a blow through configuration, I used a large heat exchanger designed to flow water made by Griffin, KB used, a totally different set up. Last year I came up with the Vortech Air to Air kit. The most critical component in any after cooled SC is the heat exchanger, so we use a huge Speerco after cooler. I have upgraded from a 90 MMLM to the new SCT Big Air B2400, we also have gone to the new GT fuel pump insuring adequate fuel pressure.
http://web.iwebcenters.com/reinhartautomotive/images/vorairairkit.jpg
This after cooler has both inlet and out let pipes at the bottom where it limits the # of 90 degree bends, which also requires less rubber collars and clamps, this set up makes for a clean east install. There is no need to buy a upgraded after cooler this unit can support up to a 1000 RWHP.
http://web.iwebcenters.com/reinhartautomotive/images/KLVAA.jpg
My car has a stock motor with 58 K on the clock, most of these miles were added by many customers who I loaned the car to while working on there's, and there are many passes at the track in the N/A, the car has Kooks LTH with STOCK mufflers 410 gears MMDS and a PI 3500 stall, Addco RSB Pro guard and a built Art car transmission, Mezirier electric watter pump, the car made 460 RWHP with about 10 degrees timing at the highest engine load.
This car is fast 11.62 at 117 MPH the car has no other add on's, no nitrous, no water methanol, all I did was run race gas and add 2 degrees global timing at Commerce this weekend, the car just devastates brand new Nitto 305/45/18 DR.

With the addition of MT slicks this car will run consistent mid to low 11's. It got 18 MPG running 85 MPH on the way home tonight.
http://web.iwebcenters.com/reinhartautomotive/images/session/00-00-1162763062-comerce.jpg
I have built motor on a engine stand, with fully massaged Fox Lake stage 3 heads, 98 Cobra Exhaust cams 2001 Lincoln Navigator intake cams, this will give me the low end torque you want for a 4000 pound grocery getter, and still give, you a glass of water on the intake smooth idle, Glassman has this exact same setup and he is at the 630 RWHP mark, his only problem to date is NO TRACTION, he has a ten second car that still gets 18 MPG, I will install this motor in the spring along with a Vortech JT Trim. I will increase the boost and the car will be in the 10's while at the same time be a daily driver, no I will not add a roll cage I love this car.
So what ever you want to do, with your car, this kit is there for all your intents and purposes.
The kit is on sale this month for 4895.00 with free shipping

The question I have, is "How does it hold up in extreme heat". Now that I'm in Texas, spending time running highways between Houston and San Antonio, it's fairly common to spend weeks in 100+ weather. Worse yet, once I get to destinations in southern Texas, I spend hours and hours stuck in traffic, sitting at idle, while it's hitting 104 to 108 or so.
Can this system keep up?
Thanks!

I can not speak for DR's setup w/ the T-Trim.....however, MY setup w/ the S-Trim handled several weeks at 95+ w/o error. No pinging...and great power. I always run Sunoco 94.

PS - Methanol Injection is ALWAYS an option ;)

I watched Dennis make the 11.6 run and looking at the board I could not beleive my eyes. Ed, a friend of Dennis and 2X Nat'l Champ, calmly says he ran an 11.6. I say no that has to be 116 MPH!
I call Dennis on the cell to tell him he ran 11.6. Dennis is chuckling, so I remind him to be sure and get the time slip!:banana2:
I rode around in the car on Fri and Sat nite and she drove no different than an N/A Marauder.
I borrowed Dennis car last year and drove it all around the Bayou. I left her in my garage for Katrina. The day they let us back in I picked her up and used the police lites to quickly get out of the neighborhood. With Chinooks, Blackhawks, Humvees and M16's everywhere we blended right in.:D

This setup is as eficant as the water to air about 22 degrees over OAT, at idle of course the IAT will go up there is no air passing over the cooler but once your rolling the IAT will come down, and there is always the watter to air.

Dennis, you are correct. Right now I am just waiting for the traction problem (and experience) to be resolved to get into the 10's. It has run a low 7 in the 1/8 @ 100 MPH with M/T drag radials borrowed from a Mustang.

Dude, the cooler on DR's car is MASSIVE. I've installed the 2 core from FIT and DR's is twice the size. I am not and will not start a SC war cuz I like em all, each for their own reasons. I make the statement above because if the FIT kit can survive southern weather and I know of 2 DR kits here in S. FL, you shouldn't have any issues.
Also, keep in mind, your engine fan WILL draw SOME air across the cooler even when idling.
BTW, I have additional cooling help under developement and in testing.

In theory you generate heat by combusting fuel.
If you are sitting at idle or in bumper to bumper traffic the only way you combust significant fuel is to engage in A BURN OUT CONTEST.

Boost is what generates most of the heat. Usually when you are generating boost you are moving, which gets the air following and "removes" the heat.
An S/C at idle or non-boost conditions only generates very slightly more heat than a N/A car.
The only condition I can think of that you would generate boost resulting in heat w/out air flowing for any amount of time is a burn out contest.:burnout:

I don't want start anything here but I have a question to ask Dennis. You ran 11.6 run that day but all of your other runs were in the 12.2 area. Why such a good run for only one race and then steady times in the 12.2 area the rest of time? That is some spread. Thank you.
BTW, congrats on your 11.6 run.

Slim you bracket race dont you??, don't you have to change your time depending on changing track conditions through out the day, all of us did, the car ran the best time when the track was cold, after that we all had traction issues, ask any one that watched me launch the car devistated the tires, after my firts pass. just like Jerry B first pass, a lot of people had issues with the track. I am going to Gainsville to night with MT lets see what happens then and I will be there Friday as well, thanks for your interest.

Lets remember that RoadPig #1 has now had the Reinhart Edition Air to Water system on her for a bit over 5k miles ... this was put on her at the 60,000 MILE MARK alongside SecondMDRebel's CrownRauder...fit and finish are still outstanding, response time is just as fresh as the day I drove her back to South Carolina. I take great pride in roasting and toasting the stoplight street racers as well as my fellow compadre in Law Enforcement...I see some subtle changes and upgrades Dennis has done with his kits and I hope to do them myself soon ( the FP being one ). Even though this is about his Air to Air setup, I see his quality, care, and forthought in the kit pictured...no loss between the two setups. I have lost my train of thought so I will just say THANK YOU DENNIS...see ya soon Sheila...Tigger, quit eating my lunch !

just remember with the larger blowers comes a bit of loss in boost response....if youre keeping a 400hp stoplight street car, youre beter off with an s-trim....i remember awhile back on the lightning forum a vendor did a comparo test on the same truck. an s-trim vs a novi 2000. same boost level...the s-trim was faster every pass....keep in mind however that this was a street truck with relatively low hp levels below 500hp.

Some wisecracker at Gainesville during MVIV race day said "Pete you should run against Dennis, Blue vs. Blue would be SO cool!" I declined, didn't want Dennis to have to stop and wait for me at the finish line. I am far too polite to make him do that. :) I can vouch for the fact that it runs quite well as he says. :D He would have :flamer: me. Those big tubes were wide wnough for me to have stuck my arms into up to my shoulder, and I gots big arms.
I tried to convince DR that he needs a "beta tester" for the Vortech air-to-air kit in the Orlando area, but I don't think he is going for it. :(

There has been a on going discussion about the difference between our Vortech air to air over the Pro charger air to air, let me say this both kits are good kits, The Vortech air to air kit was designed for the Marauder, the after cooler and associated parts will not fit on another car.
Both kits use the Cobra 39 lb injectors, we use the SCT Big air Maf, Pro charger uses a 90 MMLM. The SCT Maf will support more RWHP than the 90 MMLM, but on a stock motor this is never a factor, because I personally feel the stock motor is safe up to 450 RWHP, this is my opinion, I respect others as well, and there are Marauders with stock motors making more, my car for example my car is right at 460.
We use the new GT 500 single fuel pump, not shown in the picture, this pump flows more the an the older focus pump. Both kits use the same relocated cooling reservoir, we also supply a new fan shroud. Maintaining the stock fan wiring there is no need for cutting and splicing wires both kits use the same external IAT and pig tail.
I normally use the Vortech SQ trim, this is a quiet compressor, and because this is not a gear driven blower this will reduce false knock with the OEM knock sensors.Pro Charger standard blower is the gear driven P1C. There are differences in the compressor maps on both of these SC and Vortech did extensive testing here is there report

The S Tim is a very good SC fully capable of making over 15 PSI, you can also upgrade the S Trim to a T trim later on, you can also order a JT Trim. Again it all depends on you as the customer, and what are your plans for the car.
Pro Charger also does offer several compressor upgrades . We use a huge after cooler this cooler is rated to over 900 RWHP, there is no need for a upgraded cooler. The cooler mounts directly behind the grill in the main air flow, so there is no need for a lower air dam.

If you look at the picture below you will see both inlet and out let pipes are located at the bottom, this reduces the need for 90 degree bends. This reduces the number of clamps needed and makes for a cleaner install.
http://web.iwebcenters.com/reinhartautomotive/images/vorairairkit.jpg
We include a high flow air filter and a custom air box that fits perfectly where the stock OEM air box was located.

The Pro charger is priced less than our kit, they also have a excellent install manual, we are in the process of having a custom install manual made, we also have been revising our pipes, they all are hand made with custom 3" Mandrill bent, then powder coated.
We offer unlimited on line support and take phone calls about 50 hours a week, I answer emails daily.
So armed with this information you can now have a better understanding of the differences in both these great kits, feel free to call us any time with any questions.

I have had my DR Air to Air #8 for just over 15K miles
and I expect with proper care that it may last the life of the car.
The Vortech SQ is very quiet, achieving the full sleeper that some are looking for.
You have to listen real hard to hear the whistle at a stop light. My big give away is the kooks exhaust at take off, every body thinks the race is "ON", but I haven't hit the gas yet...the looks on their faces is classic "WTF" was that.
Mustang GT's are like eatin candy, and an untuned cobra is easy to beat...even stock Z06's are no match
I am proud to say I have assited in the install of MarauderMarc's Used Procharger install....so I have seen both centrifugals close up, grease under fingernails...etc
Fit and Finish of both kits:
Reinhart Vortech.... this "KIT" was designed by Dennis, the 3 inch mandrel bent tubing leading to the huge inter/aftercooler, very few rubber attaching pieces...this cuts down on the number of points of failure. The Vortech mounting bracket itself is a huge chunk of aircraft strength aluminum, (plain old beefy.) holds the supercharger firmly in place with no question of movement. The oil in the supercharger is changed evry time I change the oil, every 2500 (5w20 ford), I have not had any issues with the oil pan being tapped for the oil return (and that scared me at first) but in general, this keeps the supercharger cooler, yes the engine oil heats it at first, then it cools the unit when the car is up to temp....I could go on
Procharger: this kit was put together by "maraudernkc". it works really well , these are my observations regarding the kit during the "maraudermarc" installation.
the mounting "plate" for the procharger is adequit but not very strong, as compared to the Vortech mounting bracket. one of the pulleys thats part of the procharger kit was seen to have been rubbing against the back of the plate... The piping in the kit is some what generic, there are lots of rubber interconnects and band clamps....(tighten them all, then tighten again)
The inter/aftercooler is a good piece, it works great, just where to mount it...behind the bumper is safer, but the scoop is cool too.
Oil in the procharger needs to be changed every 6K miles, but its a messy hassle, and I have seen the oil leak around the plug, allowing it to run low on oil.
Before I made up my mind...I was almost poisoned by the KOOLAID....
Then spoke to Procharger directly who said that at this time there were no kits that would fit the Marauder. I sopoke to them in 2003... I was sold on the idea of air to air intercooling....... I then spoke to Dennis, at that time he was installing the air to water cooled kits. We discussed the intercooling and Dennis let me know that it was being designed, and if I could wait till it was done I would be happy....well I am happy...
And the service and level of care exhibited by Dennis and his staff is just off the charts
I would do it again in a second...hey how about a supercharged town car!
