View Full Version : Oil Pressure Warning Light ?

After discussing my latest equipment failure with several people, some of them have asked if I lost oil pressure. I honestly can't say, since I didn't look down. I'm thinking that I could add a T fitting where the sensor (functional gauge type) is connected and add a second sensor. The extra sensor would be a on-off switch type sensor (like the OEM one) which would be used to activate a warning light mounted on the A-pillar gauge pod.
Anybody know off the top of their head if the stock pressure switch is open on high pressure or open on low pressure? That tells me if I need to add a relay to switch polarity or possibly find a switch which works differently.

A easy way of doing this is use the OEM OP sensor, T it off where you real oil preasure sensor is at the bottom of the oil filter adapter, the OEM sensor is a on off switch, just go buy a small red LED mount in in your guage pod, run the wire coming from the OP sensor on one side of the LED and put 12 V on the other side of the LED, when you key on the light will illuminate as a oem OP light does, then when the car is running it goes out, if the OP falls below 10 PSI it comes on.

Exactly what I wanted, thanks!

I believe it's open w/no pressure and closed w/pressure.

I believe it's open w/no pressure and closed w/pressure. I guess that means I'll need to add a relay. Bummer.

You might also want to consider an audible alarm/buzzer, would be easy to add into the circuit to come on when the LED does. You may miss an LED if you're looking down the track but the audible alert would be quickly recognized.

Can't you just reuse the original sender?

That was the original plan, but it seems that the polarity would make the light come on if pressure is ok, go off when pressure is lost. Opposite from what I wanted. I'd better get a meter and check it out to be sure.

Yeah, you need a normally open switch or attach the stocker to a relay that will reverse the contact for you. That leaves another place for failure.

I wanted an oil light too and put one in, along with a real pressure gauge. See: linky (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17306). The circuit described will run any 12V light or buzzer. You wouldn't have to go to the extreme of reworking your instrument cluster so many of the parts and steps listed in the thread would not be needed.

My boat has a low oil pessure ignition kill circuit!! OP has to be at least 5 PSI or it won't start.....thus the engines get pre-oiled before they fire up!!
If you lose OP at WOT just getting off of it might not be quick enough??
Something to consider!!:cool4:
