300A, 53K miles, changed my own oil as I have done (even professionally) for years, using a house brand oil filter from the local parts shack and Valvoline 5W20. Now I have a knock (very faint, but there) at idle and only when in gear. It is a very heavy sounding low knock not fast enough to be a rod, corresponds more with each rev of the crank. If it is in park or at any other speed it is gone. Any ideas? I may try a different oil filter, but that’s just a stab in the dark.:help:

Thanks, I will have to check that. I did forget to mention is is only after the engine is at operating temperature.

Timing chain tensioner....

Try 5W30 oil and see if it goes away!!

OP with 5W20 is fairly low at idle when hot and I suspect that in gear it drops enough to alow the chain to slap a bit??

I was always concerned about the knocking at startup after changing the oil and was told it wasn't rod knock as I suspected but the tensioner (s)....

My $.02??

Ya hate that Carbon build up...
Its a dirty job but I sure do enjoy romping ojn the pedal a bit to clear the build right outta there.....

YOu know find a big hill and or mountain and floor it.... run throught the RPM range and don't hold back....

....and try changing your oil...LOL

All great Feedback, Thanks guys. I think you may have a very valid point about the chain tensioner MJack, I have the Lidio tune so the idle is lower than stock, if I raise the idle (manually) about 100 RPM the noise does in fact go away. I think the SCT software allows user adjustable idle, but I may be wrong. If it does I will raise the idle 100. May be carbon I suppose, but I do drive fairly hard (WOT) weekly.

A Trilogy kit is on my list, so thats why I am so worried about this knock.

Update: getting progressively worse after 25 miles, checked converter bolts etc. Shes goin to the dealer DOH!
