Can the 4.10 gears be installed without a chip? I'd like to see the performance gain first, then install the chip later.

Great site...Lots of awesome advise.

The answer is yes but your speedo will be off from 7-10 mph. This can be rectified with the chip. The gears are great...the chip, stat and plugs complete it.

BTW...welcome aboard...we got lots of boys on here from the Houston area, good guys...you need to look them up.

First of all you have lowered your top speed, with out the chip and the car will hit the rev limiter before upshifting, so I would decide on a chip, to avoid complications, also the trans will have a very soft shift, till the chip install.

^^^So true^^^

Trust us, without it....... you really don't know till you try it.
Night and Day.

Don't take this the wrong way, but...
Mine has been parked since I sent my chip for re-program upgrades a week ago....I won't drive it. It feels like ......YOURS

I went the other sequence, changing the chip first then the gears. The chip was programmed for 4.10s because I knew I was going to change the gears later. I drove it a little while with speedo error and that didn't bother me, especially with the grins I got due to the new shifting. The tranny improvements make the chip worth doing even if you don't change anything else.

I agree with FordNut.
Just the chip alone is worth the price of admission.

BTW: Robotek, I sure like that blue....that color grows on me every day. I also like the 3 pedestal wing. Nice to see someone had the balls to do it. You should check out the blue powder coat from 'Eastwood' for your calipers...that would look sweet.

Just got my SCT from Dennis and I am pleased with it. It shifts better
and is alittle more peppy. I like it....Next (in the future) is the 4:10 gears
plugs and 180 thermotsat. I am already trying to figure how I can
put together the money to make it sooner then later...heheheh:rock:

From 06-06-03 to 08-24-04 is quite a stretch, maybe our longest yet?

I installed 4.10 ratio gears in my Marauder w/out installing a chip, and the gears alone did absolutely nothing. It was only after getting the chip that I then acheived a difference in quartermile ET, trap speed, and 0-60 MPH times. Based on that experience, I simply conclude that the factory stock computer programming prevents the car from taking advantage of the new gears, and from accelerating quicker. I don't know exactly how that can be, all is I know is that the 4.10's alone did nothing for my car.

Then, once I installed the chip, my ET's were reduced by a full half second in the quartermile, which I don't believe for one second was because of the chip alone, but instead was due to having the the chip and the new gear ratio combined.

Billy,

Think of it as this.

You change your gear ratio but forget to tell the PCM about it.
The transmission will still shift at the same shift points,
because the ratio in the PCM is the same (3.55).
These old shifts are too soft and too early to make use of the 4.10 gears.

When you correct the ratio (4.10) then the transmission has to shift at a different point,
as well as the engine RPM increase to allow the use of the full bandwidth of the engine,
with the 4.10 ratio.
The shifts are firmer and they are later to make up for the extra driveshaft rotation with the 4.10 gears.

The change in the ratio also causes the PCM to recalculate the engine load, and fuel mixture accordingly.

Rauder, when I first installed the 4:10 gears, I added an accessory that interdicted the variable speed sensor and tricked the speedo into thinking the car still had 3:55's. It worked like a garage door opener with little dip switches that we adjusted to make the speedo read right. It worked, but the chip was better, like the guys are saying.

I still have the part. If you are interested, let me know and I will dig it out of the garage and give you specifics.
