I do----anyone in need of it?

I need the overall length of the axle, the length from the inside of the flange to the C clip groove, and the length of the splines from the groove to the end of the axle.

Blue Oval measured his 28's for me this evenin and the dimensions match the new 31 CVPI axles I have.

Thanks for the interest in helping out.

CVPIs are 31 spline?

As I understand it the parts we ordered/I have are for 2007 CVPI models

Limos have been 31 spline for a long time. CVPI went to 31 in 2005

New for 2005:
• Job #1 = July 19, 2004
• Fender-mounted whip antenna (passenger side rear)
• New steering wheel & column (pic)
• Crash severity sensors and weight-sensing passenger air bag disable (indicator light on dash)
• PCM relocation (pic)
• ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) -- also moves cruise function to PCM
• Optional power moonroof (P74 only)
• 31-spline rear axle
• Heated PCV
• Redesigned zip tube (P74) (P71)
• Optional active fire suppression system (police)
• NGV engine no longer available

You hit the nail on the head here. This backs up what I was about to state.

All Panthers went 31 spline in 2005, not just CVPI.

99+ Limos use 31 spline axles.

The 05+ axles should be the same exact length as the 03-04 panther rear axles.
You will also need larger axle bearings and seals. Per the late Ned Nuss, they may not fit in the stock 28 spline housing. So you may have to modify the housing some to accept the larger bearings and seals. Also, you will need a 31 spline carrier

Edit: After looking it up, Motorcraft specifies the same rear seals/bearings for 03-04 and 05+. Perhaps the 'new' 05+ 31 spline rear axles are the same thickness as their 28 spline counterparts. I know in previous years, the 31 spline limo axles were thicker.

98-02 and 03+ axles will not interchange.

the bearing surface is not necessarily the same thickness as the shaft of the axle. i didnt have to change axl bearings when i went from 28-31 spline....

You can buy the 31 spline spider gears to work in the stock case.

I am having the work done on Wednesday. I'll let you know what we find. I know the bearings and seals are listed as the same 28 vs 31. I bought a new loaded 31 spline case because I thought they were different due to the difference in diameter at the splines , I know the axles engage the side gears but I thought the case opening was smaller also... A slightly used 28 spline LS will be on eBay wednesday evening :D

I don't think you can do that. The 28 spline uses a 5/8" cross pin and the 31 spline uses a 7/8".

That is good to know. So much for interchangeability, Thanx, Sal.

BTW, off subject, would you know the part numbers for the 2000 Cobra R exhaust manifolds and x pipe?

The 2000 R used tubular headers, and a Bassani X pipe. Headers were Ford made, no idea on the part number as R parts don't come up in the Ford parts books.
