Spending a week here for work with the Sheriff's Department. Driving over here on I-10 I could not believe the destruction that is still everywhere after hurricane Katrina. Heading down St Bernard Ave over here to Bayou road was like driving though a war zone. These people here have it real rough.
A few minutes ago as I was on mm.net here on the porch at the B&B, I hear a motorcycle races by fairly close me. Then about two streets over I hear around 10-12 rapid fire gunshots. Sounded like a semi-auto rifle or carbine. Then two more loud gunshots, probably a shotgun (think return fire). I hear the MC take off ride down the street from me. The sirens are still wailing here. Now this is at 3:45 PM on a Sunday! Can't imagine it at night. I am in a safe area compund with electric gates. Plus I have a weapon (don't leave home without it). Should be an interestng week here. Glad I drove the SVT focus here. The Marauder would not be good on these small streets.

I think we de-annexed Louisiana back to the French, didn't we?
If not, we should probably get that process started. They can even have it for free! (Just tell them to bring their social welfare system with them!)

PM me, my sched this week is busy during the day.
Would like to try to meet or I can give you the scoop on the Phone.
Went out Sat Nite w/ the wife in Uptown N.O. Dropping the children off at their cousin where their aunt and other cousin were. I was the only male.
Getting dressed the wife hears my mini safe open and says you are bringing your gun, why? MY answer we are going Uptown. No more discussion needed.
We leave the cousins house together as their aunt is taking them out. The wife goes to her car a few feet away from the aunts car, I ask the wife to wait with me and she says, stand and watch them.
When we got to our rest I left the gun hidden in the car.
When I first moved back in Dec and on my visits in Sept, Oct and Nov. It was the wild, wild west. Home Depot had armed security guards. Fights and gun shots were not uncommon. A trucker threatened to kill me, I did not back down and he realized I wasn't easy prey so he backed down.
For the most part we are back to our normal crime with the exception it is being committed in new areas because the old ones are unihabitable and we still have rampant looting.
Every place I go in be it a rest, grocery or gas station I scan the exits, items for cover and things that can be used as a weapon as well as everyone in the store. When I here the staff get quiet, particularly in fast food / convience places I start heading for the exit or looking for cover while scanning which customers arrived that made them quite.

Thanks guy. Yeah, saw the news a little while ago, gang related. Happened on St Bernard Ave, right where I thought it was. A couple of them in the hospital, expected to survive (to do it again).
I feel for the people who live here that have to put up with this. And from what I understand it happens daily.

That's not cool at all. That's no way to live, man!
But, then again, most of the degenerates from New Orleans now live right here in Houston, so it's not much different in some parts of town. I wish we could load them all up on buses and send them back to Louisiana. The refugees (different from evacuees, btw) been nothing but a headache for us over here.
Next time, all of us cops are thinking of blocking off all the exit ramps all across the State of Texas on Interstate-10, and just send the buses all the way to New Mexico. One way ticket, baby.

I hear ya...(PM sent). Had a hard time finding a place to eat, at least one where I would eat, if you know what I mean. Finally ended up at a Winn Dixie and bought some food to bring back to my room. Don't really know my way around here very well. Thought it best to pack it in during the night.
Will be with the Sheriff's department all week on Tulane. Plenty of fire power there.

Saw a report on how much the violent crime/murder rate has increased in Houston since the Hurricane. Gang members are the ones most responsible for this, like everywhere else.

To this day, there are still some spots down in South Dade where you can see damage from Hurricane Andrew, and that was back in 1992. Most of it's gone now, but up until 2000, you saw it everywhere.
Unless you've been through one that devastating, it's difficult to imagine the sheer destructive power these things have.

I agree. I have lived and been through hurricanes all my life. In Massachusetts when I was a yong boy we had a huge elm tree cut our house in half from a massive hurricane in the late 50's. Never forgot the sound when it hit. We were in the safety of the basement. No basements in New Orleans or in Florida. Amazing destruction here. Couldn't imagine what these people must have gone through.

All facets of the city gov't have been run for 30 years by one political party. It is an example of how throwing money and rewarding irresponsible behaviour only results in more irresponsible behaviour w/ a shrinking tax base.
Fortunately or Unfortunately 30% of the Nations energy passes thru South LA and 30% of the Nations goods.
The State should succeed, charge tarriffs and we can either fix our problems or drown.
We sent 150K drug addicts to Houston, of which 25K were hard criminals. The criminals found out if you committ crime in Houston not only do you get arrested but you actually get convicted and go to jail. These criminals are now returning to NO. NO has a 6% murder arrest rate and 12% conviction rate. The current DA was sued and lost for dismissing most of the staff based on race and replacing them with those that had no experience.
The prob is the criminals cannot live where they used to live because most of those areas were destroyed. The criminals are now in the areas that were not destroyed. I have seen them in our neighborhood, something that has never happened before.
The illegal immigrants are now contributing to violent crime, up to this point mostly looting. As of 3 weeks ago looters broke into my grandmothers uptown house that is in a busy area and stole 50 year old toilets!
The Nat'l Guard is still hear. The NOPD has some serious probs that they are pretending do not exists. Out of 1,600 officers 200 were deserters and worse. Thats 20% of your force.
As far as City gov't and NOPD it's business as usual as though there never was a hurriucane.
We sold our house and bought one 30 miles north.:D We have an apt near our old house for the school year.
So long as New Orleans is the City that care forgot she will be just that.

I think it would be best if the offensive opinions of some of you possess would not be shared here at this informative Mercury Marauder site. Comments about "savages" and the such are offensive. It is very easy to type those kinds of things from the anonymity of your home or office where you don't see who you may be offending. As a proud Marauder owner, I really enjoy this site but the overtly/covertly racist comments take away and it bothers me. I enjoy being a member here and look forward to the day that 'senior member" is under my user name but if above comments and replies are the "norm" then I am definately in the wrong place!

You may be reading too much into the 'savages' comment. That word does not by itself indicate any particular race and in itself is not racist. I see no overt or covert intention here.
Take it as a statement of the reality current there.
Why do you believe it is anything other than that?

New Orleans was the only place that I ever promised someone that if they made one move towards me aI was gonna pick them up and throw them in front of a moving bus... and meant it.

I see lots of stuff about rudeness and uncivilized behavior, but I don't see anything about race or ethnicity in that definition.
Like I said, perhaps someone was expecting something that wasn't really there. Hypersensitive, maybe?

Drove around today to the different areas where I am conducting training here. I could not believe how high the water was in this city. There are still water lines on the buildings. Well over the height of most cars in some areas.
The people I am working with here (Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's) are some of the best people you could ever meet and work with. Race is NOT AN ISSUE with my guys and NOT THE INTENT of this thread.
It was just to inform those of what I am experiencing here as well as being with the people with survived Katrina. I have experienced crime in East LA, Chicago, Detroit and at my home in Florida. Violent crime is on the increase nationwide. There were circumstances here in NO that made things worse Katrina). And unfortunately at times of crisis the worse come out in some people. On the other hand I have personally seen and heard stories from my guys here where the BEST came out in people.

I don't mean to be offensive but have you been there lately? I take it you haven't seen a Mall (not just one store or two, a whole mall) striped clean. I was just there to the city of Slidell in Sept. on company business and everything TJA has said is factual. I'm an ex New Yorker so I have no problem going into areas where I really have no business going and what I saw was true lawlessness when the sun went down. Some places have no street lights so when the sun goes down, it's pitch black outside. And yes, i had an old feeling come back which was if I have to go up against anyone here I have to make sure they don't get back up. On that note I knew it was time to leave and get back to my motel room and really appreciate So. Fla. when I got back. As for any reference to race in this thread i feel no resentment or insult. If you have been there then you know the struggle of the good people of NO., and the mayhem the hoodlums are trying to cause.
By the way, my screen name isn't totally a reference to the color of my car.

Just kidding. Nice post. I agree 100%.
I don't think anyone indicated anything racial in their posts. It's about thugs, criminals, hoodlums, and freeriders. In my area, that's mostly white (trash) folks.
Oh, and by the way, I also drive a BLACK Crown Vic Police Interceptor, a BLACK Chevy Silverado, and I mostly wear BLACK ballcaps, BLACK leather shoes/boots and BLACK t-shirts. My police uniform is solid BLACK (with gold insignia). I'm also a big fan of the Nebraska Cornhusker's BLACKshirts defensive unit.

Tom and Billy, Do not worry, I will take you to a good place to eat on Wednesday night. It is so safe you could bring your Marauders with you. No I will not be bringing mine. For all you folks out of town, Yes New Orleans is a war zone but the out skirts are OK. I live in Metairie and remember for all the bad folks there is still a bunch of us good folks trying to live and raise their families. Large sections of N.O. are still without power and water and many homes are still in the same shape there were in on 8-30-2005. Just remember to carry your weapon and be ready to use it, if needed, in N.O. areas. I had 3" of water and the house has been rebuilt since 1-15-2006. It only took 100K to do it. So do not think all of us are bad guys.
