Hey guys, I took my maruader to the shop because I had knocking noise and they thought there was a problem with the tensioners that run the camshafts. So they fixed it, and that didn't fix the problem, so they recommended to put a new motor in, because they said it might cost as much to eventually figure out what is wrong with engine as it would cost to replace it.
They said a new block from them would cost around $5400k, and out the door for about $7400.
Are there any other options besides spending $7400 on a stock motor? I really don't even want to spend that much, but if I have to, are there other alternatives that are better than just a stock replacement engine?
I was looking for replacement engines, and I didn't have much luck. I went to Jasper, and they had one for 4k, but that is stock as well, and then I'll have to install myself.
Any recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks!

Is it a knock or a tick? if it's a head tick, take you car home drink a beer and watch a movie, no need for changing your motor and all that jazz... if it's a bottom end knock, you can get a built motor for that price

I like what I see there. I wonder if they do custom builds...:coolman:
Do you have any idea what went wrong? What mods have you don to your Marauder? How many miles are on it?

Your taking a chance with them.there was a member here that had bought a cobra motor from them just to have it spin a bearing at idle and then had a hard time trying to collect thier money.http://www.foxlakeracing.com/ this is who built mine.

I would run it until it blew up...also check the harmonic balancer...I have had them go bad (rubber separates) and it sounds just like a rod knocking...I do not even know if our balancers are made like that but people have wasted money because of this issue...also take it to someone else...2nd opinion for your baby...could be alot of things but to just buy an engine without knowing the cause of the knock is not the right thing to do IMNSHO...let her blow and then you will know...willie
Dude,
You are in Cali?
Talk to these guys.

See what they can do for you. If I was on the left coast and needed a motor, these are the guys.

I am the mystery person with the bad motor from karkraft, ask alot of questions about "what happens if" because stuff happens. Took 8 months to untangle the mess, you need to talk to the shelp that actully turns the nuts and bolts and not salesmen to find out if he has enough confidence to use the motor himself or if its "we sold a boat load of them and never had a problem."

Tom,
Did you buy a Masterbuilt motor they offered or did you buy one of the take outs they had?

Our Harmonic balancer(s) are all metal.
The Steeda UD's have rubber.
Can you be without the car for a while?
I would rebuild what you have with forged rotating assembly.
I would check around about reputation who is good in your area.
^^ looks like you got a couple leads/ideas.
What ever it is you deciede, post up .

The motor I got was a new "Cobra" custom built with all new parts. As for Masterbuilt that was not an option at the time. Any motor should come with an inspection book of all the part measurments but we never care and accecpt what the man tells us. You can't assemble a motor without alot of measuring so we should be more demanding to get documentation. Tom

Are you saying that you installed this Cobra engine in your Marauder?
I'm not familiar with Masterbuilt. Is this the company that did the Cobra engine upgrade?
Any idea of the cost for all of the work done on this engine that you now have?

I'll second the www.car-part.com (http://www.car-part.com) suggestion. Also, if checking for a JY motor look for one out of an Aviator, they're usually MUCH cheaper and less likely to be beaten.
I'm going to be picking up an Avi motor for mine that has 18k on it, swapping it in then using the original motor for mock up on the engine stand for building the single turbo setup, then rebuilding it to handle 8-10psi.
I definitely object to the drive it till it scatters guys, why destroy a motor that's likely worth 1k-1500 even with a minor bottom end rattle? Drive it till it pops and you run the risk of destroying the entire bottom end and/or valvetrain parts. Pretty foolish imo. I know the stock motor out of mine will be sold for 2k easily when the forged shortblock and turbo go in. Doesn't make sense to destroy it just because you can.

Yes, I have a real Ford crate Cobra motor in my MM, and no cutting of the frame, real factory warrenty, stock set up, well almost, for a big price. 11,000 just for the motor, only three crate motors left a year ago when I got mine. All fab work done by JDM Engineering, in NJ. and I am happy with their work and tune, Dennis has seen the custom fab work that needs to be done and he is the person that could do the next one for less time and money than the year it took me, and the trash can full of money, to get mine done without cutting the frame.
I have a small upper pulley; 2.80" and 14 pounds of boost across the board, look at my dyno chart at Dennis's posts, and complain to me about the low numbers, 444 tourque, just what I asked for, look at RWT at idel, I love this car, I have tryed to answer all your e-mails to me with your questions. I did this set up for max torque at 2000 rpm. as a daily driver, and I have the torque I have strived for, I just did a 3.27 rear gear and I love it, I'm going to go back to my 1800 stall PI converter next week, my 2500 stall is slipping too much. What a launch, YEEEHA. Tom

Did you try disconnecting the coils one at a time to see if the noise goes away? Others have tried it here, it can determine wether it's from the bottom end or valve train.

I would take it to another dealer for a 2nd opinion.
Does it only knock when cold? If so, it is a common modular issue and not necessarily a problem.

For 7500 cant you get a built 4.6 engine with a stroker kit and some ported heads? sounds like alot more bang for the buck that that much for a stock engine and stock internals.

"Cheaper to replace the motor than figure out what's wrong with it..."
WTF?! Who said this? A mechanic or a carpenter?
I would have to think that a good stethyscope should be able to pin point the source of the noise. At that point you should be able to make a much more INFORMED decision.
Are these motors really that complex that problems can't be diagnosed? Popping a big pile-o-coin on a new motor just to fix a "noise" seems terribly excessive to me.

I would get a junkyard engine for like $2,500 if you had to. A stock replacement through Ford is about $6,800 before labor. Get a few opinions before you drop a good amount of change. I was told I needed a new engine last year and it turns out it was bad wiring and this was after I replaced the engine. It was worth it though because I had 99,000 miles and have plans for upgrades.
