after about 250 miles of driving (up north at the fiance's grandparent's for christmas) we arrive back down in Des Moines IA to pick up my daughter from the Adventureland Inn, we do, and when leaving the parking lot I see mustang pull in behind me from the other side of the street (with the grille fog lights) so im thinkin cool, V-8 mustang. We both turn onto 330 to head back to Marshalltown, we go through the speed zones to leave town and the mustang is going slighty faster than me so they get in the other lane and start coming by me slow, I get a good look and see the roush badge on the fender, the ground effects, then the rear bumper with the tir/rectangle exhaust tips. I say "hey honey, look at that stage 3 roush mustang,...... I might just have to race him"

As soon as a get done speaking she pipes in about "its christmas, theres a 4 yr old in the back, and i dont think so" the usually excuses as to why not to race

I chime back with "well maybe we'll get lucky and get stoped next to them at the light" (the only light left before we totally get out of town and nothin till marshalltown) the yellows on the side of the road start flashing letting you know the light will change soon because it is in a 55 mph zone "oh yeah" from me, I get a "you better NOT" from her, we line up at a red.

I pull it down into 1st and turn the O.D. off, she knows what it means, and begins with the stern complaints again, I start loading up to torque converter and wait for the green.

BAM, light changes, the tires let out a small yelp as they try to catch and we go, The mustang didnt quiet know it was a real race, but is quick to figure out after I already jump out to a 2 car lead. I hear them struggling to catch up, some squealing from the mustang and the rear view mirror tells me they are not wanting to lose to the dirty black sedan with the SVT badge and chrome marauder inserts on the bumber (the road wet all morning and it was dirty, you know how it is). The marauder gets close to redline, slap it into second, a squeal of the tire, I'm 2 cars ahead of the mustang and the gap is CLOSING, I keep the pedal down, mustang still closing, I keep the pedal to the floor and we scream past 80 mph, the mustang very close now and then we hit 3rd, side by side its almost like we both pause, my guess is he's thinking "what the hell is in that black sedan" "I'm thinking dam, wheres my supercharger, hes got one.... and is there any red-blue lights anywhere?" he pulls by, I let off, he lets off and we both coast back down to the speed limit and I fall in behind him for the drive home.

(I said it was a kill story, I just didnt say it was me getting killed)

We get about 1/4 of the back to M'town and the mustang turns, on the way by a give a little honk honk, and we continue the drive, still hearing, I can't belive you did that, but for me, I still say it is was worth it, drag racing on christmas eve, nothing better!! (except winning)

I know the feeling, one of my friends has a 06 Stage 1 Roush, and quite often we go at it, only from a 20-30 mph roll, never from a dead stop. This happens on an entrance ramp onto a 4 lane highway, that doesn't see much traffic. If I'm ahead of him on the ramp I make it a race for him untill about 75ish then he starts to pull away, but if he is ahead of me, well it's over before it starts, as he pulls away quickly.

Expect a LOT more of those when you get married to her!

It only gets worse, trust me!

First the good sex goes away, and then the nagging begins. And then you start working longer hours to pay for it all.

(By the way, despite my own propensities, I can't argue with her logic about not racing with a child in the car.)

Good times. Was it a Grey with Black stripe Stage 3? That is the only one I have seen around this area. What time were you in Altoona? I was there around 10:30am to drop by car off at the Adventureland Inn and meet my Dad and sister there. We ate brunch at the truck stop and then drove to Grinnell to move some of my Dad's stuff.

While there, my sister's water broke (she was pregnant and due on 01/06/07). so, we loaded here in the car and brought her back to the hospital in Des Moines. Where my niece was born almost 2 weeks early at 10:42pm. Quite the Christmas present.

She was right. You know it. It's gonna be a rocky relationship if you can't figure out the important stuff. Glad it turned out OK for everyone.

My daughter lives to race. She loves the Marauder. However, be a Dad, know the conditions and know your limitations and safety factors, then back off 15% or more with a kid in the car. Still fun, but not dead or injured.

Good story. Good run. Be safe!

I hear ya Rich...I agree with not being a blundering inexperianced pizza delivery boy late for a delivery...Im just gonna have to increase my power output by 15% to be able to go the same speed... I love the flamers that say " OH NO I cant believe you would ever do THAT"....LOL

And if youve never been 80 in the box of a pickup your grandpa just mustnt been cool enough!:coolman:

No Speed Limits in Germany

As someone who lived in Germany for 6 years (1975-1978 and 1986-1989), I hear this argument rather frequently. However, there is really no comparison.

1. Yes, there are places in Germany (and other places in Europe) that have no speed limits. These are limited to the autobahns and major highways equivalent to our interstate highway system.
2. Personally, I feel that the autobahn is a much superior design to what we have here in the states. The autobahn dates back to the 1930’s and pre-dates the US system by about 25 years. It was designed for higher speeds with wide lanes, long sweeping turns, very limited access, high speed mergers and interchanges, signs that are clear and unambiguous and place well in advance (> 5 kilometers) of major junctions, splits or interchanges. Think aircraft runways.
3. Most of the “No Speed Limit” sections of autobahn are limited to the rural sections of highway …. Or out in the sticks if you prefer. As you approach urban or population centers, speed limits are clearly posted. Beware of construction zones where speeds drop to 50-60 kph (31-37 mph). As the population of Europe increases and urbanization takes over, these No Speed Limit sections become increasing rare.
4. Even in the “No Speed Limit” zone, one frequently encounters the “120 ist Genug” signs. That means 120 kph (or about 75 mph) is “enough” or the recommended top speed.
5. Lane and speed discipline on the autobahn is strictly observed. Slower traffic “always” stays right. If not, you are flirting with the Darwinian Theory of “Survival of the Fittest”. The slow and the stupid in the left lane generally did not survive long enough to pass on their poor driving traits.
6. I think that the German people treat speed much differently than Americans for a variety of reasons.
a. Driver’s licensing in Germany is very strict and regulated. There is a large fee, training and testing that takes place before one gets to operate a motor vehicle. In the 1970’s, I heard that the fee was about 3000 DM (about $1300 at that time). Driver’s didn’t get a license until they paid the fee, attended the training and demonstrated knowledge of the rules, regulations, and skill to drive. Compare that to what you see in the US. When I was in Europe, I rarely if ever saw a 16-17 year old driving – either they weren’t ready or didn’t have the cash to take the training or test.
b. Vehicle inspection was serious and thorough. One never saw a beater or junk car on the roads ….. anywhere. They were always spotless with good rubber, good brakes, fully operational with all lights, etc in working order, no broken glass, no loose parts dangling off the car. Contrast that to some of the POS on US highways.
c. Most German and European drivers exhibit a knowledge of their vehicles, an understanding of their capabilities and limitations, and a driving skill that generally exceeds that of the typical person on US highways. They signal to change lanes, know where they are going, and keep their cars in good repair. A left blinker means they are turning left … not “guess what I am gonna do next” or “my blinker has been on since I bought the car”.

7. Speed was never a concern for me on the autobahn. In fact, I felt safer there at 85-90 mph than on I-95 in Virginia at 65 mph. I think it was the “predictability” of the German driver.
8. Notwithstanding all of the above ^^^^^, I have driven at 120+ mph on the autobahn. I have been passed by Porsches, Mercedes, BMWs, Lamborghinis, and Ferraris, and even motorcycles that made me look like I was standing still. Someone is ALWAYS faster or testing their top end speed. Some of the wrecks were spectacular when one of these high speed jockeys lost control or ran up on a left lane hog who just didn’t get the message. I’ve seen accidents where parts from Mercedes could be put into tiny Zip Lock bags including the passengers.
9. Any road in Germany and the rest of Europe that is conducive to “drag racing” (i.e. with stop signs and stop lights) is by definition limited to 100 kph maximum (or 62 mph) on the biggest and best secondary roads. Most are much more limited than that and are more frequently in the 80 kph (or 50 mph) range.
10. German Polizei don’t take very kindly to automotive antics of any kind. They carry Uzis …. Loaded … and are always in pairs.

Yes, I was much, much safer when driving in Germany.

OK, you got me! She was my co-pilot! Spottin DR and Tom and checking for open lanes!!!! Team drivin'! Still, I wasn't pushing it 100%!

When I say 'limitations', I include the distraction of nagging passengers! That stuff wrecks my concentration!

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem! When will they learn, they'll have more fun and be safer if they co-pilot? Watch rally races and take a lesson!

Bluerauder You just made the best post I have read in a while...You are absolutely right on each and every count. I personally have driven an M-1 main battle tank on the roads of Germany literally thousands of miles. I wish the american requirements for Licensure of new drivers were 75% as difficult to attain as europe. The drivers training manual is like a small telephone book. I failed my DL test the first time I tested. I have seen Americans fail 5-6 times and never get thier license. I think its a shame that Americans feel like if you ever break a speed law you are risking every occupants life therefore enthusiastic driving is why the world is dangerous and all enthusiasts should be burnt at the stake. I remember having to practice slowing down to 100mph for months in preparation for my return to the states. I miss living in a world where everyone was a good driver and it sucks being around all of the nanny nanny boo boo I'm telling mentality idiots here in the states. I guess they can't help it...Al
