I having been kicking around the complete stereo upgrade for my car. As part of that, we are looking at a 5.1 surround setup that would include a center channel speaker. The setup would have a single DIN CD/DVD head unit that would have a flip-out/up screen and a single DIN speaker mounted below it.

Now, the other day I was driving and was looking at the stereo location and realized there is that nice little over hang from the top of the dash right above the radio. So my question is (since I have not been back to the shop yet that I am talking to for the install) will a flip-out screen from a single DIN head until work with that overhang? Or, will I have to go with a double DIN sized setup with a screen that is always out and for go the center channel and 5.1 setup?

Anyone have pics of a flip-out, single DIN CD/DVD head unit in their car? If so, can you post a picture or point us to it?

Thanks,

There are a few members that have them installed. You can also swap the HVAC & radio positions.

flip up facey no worky. Hits the dash.
I've seen 2 people relocate the AC controls and do the flip up there, but the car has to be in gear to operate or change cd's cuz the shift lever is in the way.

Here are 2 suggestions. Go with the double din. Regardless of the fitment guides, they fit. A little trimming is all that's required.
You could then either do the 2 tweeter on 1 channel both mounted on back of rear-view mirror trick or cut a hole in the dash above the radio and mount a 3.5" coax.

Another thought is to relocate the temp sensor that's behind the little grille next to the AC controls and find a speaker to fit there.

I have done the 3.5" in the dash on one of my cars and it works great. I've also done the 2 tweeters on the rear view with some success. They have to be soft domes so they can reach down in frequency a bit.

BTW, Pioneer makes a 2" surface mount speaker just for center channels now. That would prevent dash cutting and perhaps open up some placement options.

IMO the flip up face does not look as good because it is a single din and our stock radios are double din. When you put the flip up in the space it looks very cheesy and when the screen flips up, some units hit the dash. I put in a Kenwood double din touch screen and it looks like it came with the car. With the single din units you have to put in a cover piece to take up the empty area. IMO the double din is the only way to go anything less takes away from the cars appearance but "to each his own".
Single DIN is the average size car radio
Double DIN is approx. two of the average size radios

what model kenwood did you go with? I just put in a DDX7015. the mounting sleeve is huge. it doesnt fit in the dash. I am in the process of making my own sleeve for it to fit. Just wondering if maybe you have a normal size sleeve...

The reason I was looking at the single DIN was so that I could fit the Alpine single DIN size center channel speaker under the headunit.

I went back and talked to the place that I have been working with on this. Talked to a different guy this time. Their head Audio guy at this shop. He actually did my remote start install in the Marauder when he worked at a different shop.

Anyway, his question was: how often will you actually watch a movie that you would use the 5.1 surround sound that I was looking at going with. Truthfully, not all that much. And my daughter wouldn't know the difference of 2 channel or 5.1 when she is watching from the back.

So, I can save some money or put money elsewhere going with the double DIN instead and forgoing the 5.1 setup. That also means I save on the Amp/Processor for the 5.1 and actually use 2 matched (appearance wise) amps - 1 for the front and rear, and 1 for the sub. And the amps I am looking at are stackable.

So, looks like I will be going the double DIN route when the time comes. The guy also said he is going to one of the big car audio shows in a week or so and will get to see and listen to the new Alpine units coming out. Their current one has a hookup and docking station for their Blackbird (?) NAV unit that would mount that in a glove box or something and run through the head units display. Well, the new one is supposed to mount the Blackbird in the headunit itself. No extra space needed. And Apline's new Bluetooth setup is supposed to be WAY ahead of where they are now.

Yes, I know there other manufacturers and options, but for me I narrowed down to Alpine or Pioneer. I have used both in the past, always been happy, and want matched components (headunit, speakers, amps, etc). So, to fit our doors, I am going with an Alpine setup with their "X" series of speakers and amps. They said for the separates in the door they would try to fit a 6 1/2", but otherwise will be the 5 1/2" with a tweeter mounted higher.

Looking at a custom either plexiglass or carpet covered wood panel to hide the rear shelf where the sub and amps will be and they are going to do a custome God's Head logo in there for me. So it will all be hidden in the trunk.

I went with with the Kenwood DDX7017 and still retain use of the steering wheel controls. That was an additional cost of $90.00

eric, did you have it installed or do it yourself?
I havent bought the Pac SWI-X for my car yet, but I plan to. It would be nice to have the steering wheel controls back.

I had it done by Xclusive Audio. Deck was $899.00 @ AAFES website no tax plus the $90.00 for that remote interface and install cost was $220.00. Well worth the money and the sleepless nights on the couch (purchased without wife's permission)

No problem here but I am getting a Pioneer AVIC Z1 in two months after the Trilogy install. I will relocate the AC controls back down.
