My 04 has started the infamous blue smoke at start up. Now I've done a search and noticed that this seems to be an '03 only problem. Anyone here with an 04 with blue smoke. Of course my car is at 37,800 miles so no waranty for me:mad: . It's only the drivers side. Any Ideas?

Yup. Mine did it the other day on a cold start.

17,300 miles.

Mine has prolly done this about 6 or 7 times since I took ownership a little over two years ago. :(

Is it oil or gas burning. If I just wanted to back mine out of the garage when the engine was cold. In the past, I would have started it then shut it off right away. I noticed that when I went to start it again later in the day, it would sometimes show white smoke. Now I start it and let it idle for several minutes.

Mine has done it off and on for over 2 years but never uses any oil??:shake:

I wouldn't worry about it unless you have the "Ticking" as well??

If you ever start it cold to move it and shut it down while it is still in "Open Loop".....See what happens when you start it again a few hours later.....BIG SMOKE!!! If this is when you see it don't worry....they all do it!!

This is white smoke, not blue smoke.

It smells like the smoke produced when you sea foam a motor. Sorta oily. I disconnected my pcv hose and noticed an excessive amount of oil in the tube so I'll replace the PCV valve first.

I had to re-route the PCV system in our SVT because it was burning a TON of oil. Blue smoke at start, high RPM shift, even the car stunk inside when you'd go full throttle. Apparently the oil will slosh back and get sucked in.

I plugged the PCV hole in the back of the drivers side valve cover and put in a screw in breather where the stock oil cap goes. Then on the passanger side I put the PCV valve on the front and ran it into the intake. Then plugged the hole for the passanger side to intake tube. Once I did this it completely went away. Car dosn't smell like oil, car dosn't burn oil, and it runs awesome.

I havn't had any issues like this in the MM yet but if it happens I'll be doing this on it too.

You may want to consider this.

Also I believe steeda makes an oil seperator kit that alot of mod motor folks like running and swear by...

Edit: if you replace that valve use fomoco stuff. The stuff at part stores SUCK and don't seal worth a damn...

I have had blue smoke on cold start up on my 04 maybe 3 or 4 times the first was at about 12K the last two that I remember was about 2 weeks ago at 42K...no ticking issues. I do remote start it alot and it does not always start on the first try...sometimes takes 3 tries....dont know if that has anything to do with it....

SID,

I would expect that if you try 2 or 3 times to get it started you simply have a lot of gas in the cold cylinders and when if finally fires that oily, rich mixture will "PUFF" a bit!!

I don't know how remote starters work or what they sense to stop the cranking process but my car has never failed to crank when cold......first try!!:bows:

Like I said before the smoking happens from time to time in cold (below 40*) Wx!!

I'd have to agree with Wes.
I have 67k on mine.
If I let her sit for more than just a few days, I get a puff of smoke on startup.
Then I'll never see it again for weeks.

Mine has done that ONCE in two years. Moved it from driveway to street, then it sat for a few hours. Big puff of smoke when we went to leave the house later in the day.

That happens with all the newer ford vehicles. It should smell like gas. These cars do not burn oil like that until at least 150k, or maybe 200k. Rev it hard a few times and blow that ***** out. Its almost as if the car has been flooded by sitting.

I have to agree.....I have had close to 200K miles on two CV's and never had any oil consumption issues but they would PUFF a cloud every now and then!!:o

My Marauder still does it every now and then as stated before but "ZERO" oil consumption!!

Ya know the automotive industry would like us to trade every 60K miles and they have all but valued cars over 60K miles as "Worthless" in the past.....Not anymore folks!!:shake: These cars we have will last a loooooong time with reasonable care.....:rasta:

My philosophy now is "drive it 'til it breaks then fix it and go some more"!!
