Howdy, and let me say this is a great site. Lots of good info (been lurking and studying a lot), with helpful, knowledgable folks, and a relative absence of jerk-like posts. Nice work, Logan.
Can I play, too?
I have been reading many (most?) of the posts regarding pros/cons/300A vs 300B, etc. etc (including the famous would you buy a MM again? http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=3046 )
and think I might just have to get one of these puppies, or Big Dogs, as it were.
The thing is this: I need a car to travel LOTS of miles safely and comfortably (I'm not very small, either), available at a good price, but without the penalty of a frugal (read: dull) set of wheels.
I had to sell my Cobra Vert a couple of years ago, and I still need counselling for that loss :(.
One local dealer has 6 300A's that I think could be had at a fair price. Another local has one blue and two silvers, and is offering the blue at 24,995 (with every rebate, discount in the world, not all of which I am eligible for).
So, I may be off to grab one of these things.
Any divine guidance or words of wisdom are appreciated. Wish me luck.

EasyRhino,
In my not so humble opinion, there is NOTHING else out there to even concider. The car eats highway miles for breakfast, twistys for lunch, Gas for a light dinner, and Rice Pudding for dessert.
If you can get a NEW one for less then $26K, I wouldn't even wait for the wifes aprovell (yeah, right) That would be a deal of the year.

ARE YOU TRYING TO GET ME KILLED???? Buying a car without the wife's approval ;) ?
Seriously, I did a detailed search of available platforms and had decided that I would buy a CV or GM, which kind of bummed me out, but it just seemed like the right thing to do. Kind of bummed the wife out, too. Then I found a black on black CV LX Sport and that was okay, but she didn't like the way it looked.
Then it gets good: I found the blue MM and she liked it okay (particulary with the good price), but she didn't like the color combo, and asked "what about Black?'" (Thank you, Lord).
Then I said, You know that the MM has my old Cobra engine in it (close enough for her, anyway).
Last night she says, "I think you should just get one.":D
I think I played that pretty well, don't you?:coolman:

Go for it! I was about to suggest Sarge's old ride. Then I saw your price for the blue. Wow! Even if you only qualify for some of the rebates, it sounds like a sweet deal.

I was hoping that I could get the job as the board villiage idiot. Are you saying it's taken??? ;)
Yeah, I think it's a ton of car for the money (well, technically 2.1 tons).
It fits both my frugal side (like the "Millionare Next Door" book philosophy), my "need for speed" side (we're going vertical, Mav), and my backside. :P

Naw, I'm going to let this one stew a bit. I'm going to wait until she starts prodding me: "Honey, are you going to buy that car, or not???" :P .
Besides, I'm going to slowly skin the dealer for maximum price advantage - much more painful. The incentives don't run out for a month, the dealer has 5 or 6 300A's left over. :D
I've been told that I am aggravating enough to piss off the Pope. Why not use that skill from time to time?

I'm targeting Lynnhaven Lincoln Mercury. I have never been real impressed with them, but I never bought a car there either, plus I can get a car serviced anywhere. Thier website shows 6 black 300A's in stock (redundant, I know). Sunday I lurked down there while they were closed and laid eyes on five of the six. Since they have so many (only dealer in town with 300A's) I'm thinking that they might be more, shall we say, flexible??
I did drive that pearl blue one at Freedom LM in chesapeake (on Military Hwy) and it was nice, but the wife unit did not like the color:D , lucky me - I really want black). They are advertising 24,995 with all incentives included, but since I cannot qualify for all of them, that puts be at 27,828 (before taxes and tags) counting only the military (750) and rebate (3500).
Hope this helps:cool:

EasyRhino,
As you can see by my sig, I'm the black sheep of the family here...but before I bought the LX Sport I was heavily into the web dickering with both Lynnhaven and Freedom..had them in a price war for that time...most dealers were not going much below MSRP...I finally ended the competition with a bid from freedom of 32K pluss change...in my eyes that was still a little too steep, so I plucked the black CV Sport from bowditch for 25K...anyway, getting back to my story, Freedom L/M seemed to be a little more inclined to barter...they were trying very hard to get my money, and they almost did...Lynnhaven L/M had a pretty good internet price for the time...I just hate going to Va Beach for anything...however, IMHO either dealer should bend over backwards and at almost 25K I think they already are starting to bend...good luck in your hunt...I would dress up in an overcoat, but I dont think that a 59 year old grey haired SS agent would scare them...maybe I could go the Mafia route...anyway, as you said, go VERTICLE MAV..and see if your RIO can take a picture up close and personal...

Rhino; The following are common problems that I am aware of, all learned thru this forum.
1) Early cars may have bad rear wheel bearings.
2) Some have misadjusted shifters that make it feel ‘uncertain’.
3) Rear speaker/shelf vibration.
4) Wire harness at rear of passenger side cylinder head that rubs against sharp casting corner.
5) Wire harness at rear of driver side cylinder head that rubs against sharp casting corner, or against bracket inside from the power brake booster.
6) Stumbling when engine is cold.
7) Loose hardware at front alum cross member and rack mount.
I'd recomend the latest version 300B. I agree, wheels are boring. Brown L/M in Fairfax VA was great, if you don't mind the drive.

Enjoy the MM and see you in Texas.:D
(hey TAF how that for a plug:) )
I bought mine without the wife's approval and you know, it hasn't been that bad...you can just keep turning the stereo up and you can imagine she's not there!
EasyRhino
06-10-2003, 01:53 PM
Wow, I leave for a test drive and all these responses, one offer to a hot used MM, and three endorsements for same!
Sarge, you sure keep nice cars. Did I read somewhere else that you bought sort of a "Super MM"??? :coolman: Nice.
I have a thing for buying new, kind of like having to have my first cup of coffee before I get out of bed in the a.m. I admit that I am weird that way. My wife will tell you I am weird that way, too (also in other ways, but that's NOYB!)
I'm even weirder about modding, which oddly enough brings me to the MM. Heck, when I sold my 98 Cobra with 48,000 on the clock, the only mod was a snake grill emblem, which I replaced with the original pony prior to sale. I even buy OEM hoses and belts. Don't ask why.
So maybe I won't fit on this board after all :alone:
Anyway, my new-car buying, frugal to a fault, no mod doing, muscle car dreaming, long-trip having, goony googoo factors are what led me to the MM. To wit:
(1 & 2) New car buying & frugal nature: where else can I find so much car for so little money? Guys and gals, I've looked, and I just don't see it. I really really tried. I can buy a family sedan that rocks??? Let me at it.
(3) No Mod doing: Wher can I get a big car with this much spunk out of the box?
(4) Muscle car dreaming: Sorry, but although I am sure they are great, I cannot do the front wheel drive Japanese-American car thing. My feelings for overpriced european cars does not make them appeal to me either.
(5) Long-trip having: I am going to need a long trip, high-mileage car that doesn't bore or offend me, delivers me safely and in comfort, has good trunk space, gets good mileage, etc.
(6) Goony goo-goo: This can't be helped. :o
So that's what brought me to the MM conclusion solution.
And all the helpful thoughts I lurked on board this site brought me here. Besides, you people remind me of my old cell mates
;) .

Drove a 6/02 built 300A with 109 miles on the clock. Needs a good cleanup, that's for sure.
I was real pleased with the drive, the power, and the comfort.
Initially, upon my arrival, the salesman told me that they had sold a bunch of them, and that they were selling like hotcakes. I let it drop.
Later, towards the end of the drive, I mentioned that the four that they have remaining (that I could find, their website shows 6 in stock), all have June 02 build dates.
Then the salesman made several comments in a row:
1 - we need to get these sold to make room for the 2004s
2 - we understand that you are also working with another dealership, but I think we can make you a deal that can't be beat (cue the Godfather music)
3 - Hinted that the dealer hold-back was negotiable, in so many words.
Then as we were parting, he invited me in for coffee so he could get me his card and a brochure, and without prompting, wrote up- the following Buyer's Order (took all of 5 minutes): (dated to expire July 2)
Retail: 34,695
Sale Price: 31,000
rebates: 4,250
Cost: 26,750 plus "fees" which are dealer Porcessing fee of 399, taxes (3%, therefore = 803), plus tags/title (about 40).
So, the unsolicited offer out the door comes to 27,992, and we have not even begun to bargain.
I gotta go do my homework on this one.
If you were doing this deal, what would you do next?? I just do not want to leave money on the table. :help:
I think that the invoice price on this puppy (Big Dog ;) ) is 31,761, and the holdback comes to $1041 (but, there should be no pre-paid floor plan interest left in that 1041).
(Edited for content. Can anyone else on here not see spelling errors prior to posting responses :mad2: ). I miss my secretary.

Easy, you can't beat the MM for long trips---have a stock 300B--just got in from a 3,200 mile round-trip from Ft. Worth to Wilkes-Barre, PA in 5 1/2 days !!!!I am 6'2" and 250# w/long legs and I feel like I could leave tonite on another trip---by the way, I'm 74 yrs young. The MM never failed to give me everything I needed--from max braking to accelration in the 70-90 mph range--average cruise at 75 with occasional 85-95--mountainous roads were a snap--like running on rails--no mileage figures yet, but know they ranged from about 21 to over 23--this is my 4th "90's series Merc and this is by far the best---IMHO you can't do better for twice the money---gop for it !!!!!

Randy's a straight-shooter and the dealership is above-board and honest. They really do care about customer relationships. I'm a tough customer and they're the only ones I would deal with in the area.
I too needed a good car in which to travel long miles (600-mile trips in a sitting). The Marauder suit my bill. Also, my husband has (as everyone here knows & is bored to death about) a Shelby Mustang Cobra. He heartily endorsed the MM pre-purchase and is very happy with it, as I am. Luckily, we were out to dinner in the Explorer, and there was NOT a new MM on the side of the drive where the trunk landed. :o
Oh, well, I am hooked and intend to pick this thing up. I'll probably just give the two dealers a "flirt" phone call today. :D
But seriously, you people are AOK.:). Thanks for all the support and encouragement. I am so glad to have tripped to the MM conclusion. It would be like kissing your sister for me to have to buy a blue-hair CV or GM, or to buy a Euro/Far East mobile.
So, how many miles do you think I can put on it before it's time for the scrap heap? I'm thinking 250K. :D

I've got a 1992 CV with 240,000 on it. It's a winter only vehicle now, but it used to be my daily driver. It needs a windscreen, and uses a little oil between changes. I've rebuilt the trans and re-done the bearings and seals on the rear end. Other than regular maintainence, brakes and tires, it's been a good car.
The leather is hardly worn, and the carpet looks like new. Not a dent or a spot of rust from all that salt and gravel. I treat cars like women. Buy them expensive gifts once in a while, tell them they are still pretty and they'll do anything you ask of them.
I'd say my MM will never see a scrap heap, unless some other driver does it for me. With the size and safety of the vehicle, I'd pity the fool.

Welcome to the group... I've just finished reading all about your MM-quest, with great amusement. You sound like you're going through everything I endured (or close) while I was agonizing over my decision. Only, in your case, it doesn't sound like you're sacrificing an existing solid totally-trouble-free but boring automobile (in my case, a 1998 Civic EX) in order to get this beast.
Don't rush it, follow your instincts. The better you feel about the whole thing, the nicer the overall experience will be. In my case, I waited and researched for a solid 2 months or more before I felt it was time... and was rewarded with a killer deal from a killer dealership.
As for mods... same philosophy. I recommend that you enjoy the car bone-stock for a while and then assess whether you want more. Initially, you'll be inclined to think the car is somewhat underpowered, but when given some time to 'mature', you'll find it will start to loosen up and you may even like it just the way it is. I do... I think. ;)
All my cars are bone-stock and I'm okay with that.

Thanks for the welcome. I got a lot out of reading your posts during your early MM phases.

Roger that, not trying to be insulting, hell, I'm as old as dirt, just in heavy denial, hence the MM desire.
