Glenn

Yes, the reborn Maurauder "Interceptor" for 2009. You asked for it and now it is close to realization. A 4 door sedan, 400 HP 5.0 liter V-8, rear solid axle, 6 speed manual transmission (yes, 6 speed), huge tires, low roof-line, luxury leather interior, 4 bucket seats with 4-point seat belts and it's available in black. It's almost here at your Ford dealers, but for now see it at the NAIAS in Detroit next week. Never say die Marauder lovers. Faith moves mountains.

The concept car is cool, but this confirms a rumor that I was hearing that Ford will introduce a 5.0 (94 MM) bore, iron block mod motor in the near future. Could be an interesting upgrade.

$45K is a lot of money.

We pretty much agree that $35K was more than the Marauder was worth, so it was discounted to move the units that they did sell. At $45K you are bumping into some desireable cars. Can Ford demonstrate that the value is there? They couldn't with the LS. I won't buy a $45K car, I can't justify it to the wife. How many can they sell? As much as I like my Marauder I don't think that large high performance sedans are where Ford's future is. They need to be competitive in the transporation module segment. The "Halo effect" doesn't seem to help Ford.

with for underpining the interceptor with the new mustang costs are already on the cheap side, even with a large motor and all the comfort items they could easily sell these in the 25-35K range use the 4.6 out of the CV and for the higher end the 5.4

chrysler does this with the 6 cylinder 300

ford oddly has the advantage with the less sophisticated read suspention lowering costs and sharing the platform with the mustang.

This could be the start of the CV/GM replacement as well as an luxury town car sucessor. remeber that chrysler has a long wheelbase 300 for use as a livery vehicle. NYC requires a vehicle with the extra length. even the CV used for Taxi duty are lenghthend.

If ford plays its cards right it can replace and refesh its current large sedan lineup as well as attract new buyers to the showroom.

It has to something - i hear that there is excess capacity already at the mustang facility.........

It's nice if they build it, but is not for me...for $45k I do expect high tech electronics and I sure as hell am not going back to shifting, did enough of that when I was young and it gets old real quick.

Our beloved Marauder was supposed to come out in the 28-30K range and the bean counters and L/M dealers convinced Ford the Marauder could sell at 35K.... the rest they say is history and so went the Marauder.

Duncan if it's an auto I'm in.....but

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford Motor Co. will introduce a 4-door, V-8 concept-car carrying most of the mechanical underpinnings of its popular Mustang sports car, the company said in a recent statement.
With its six-speed manual gearbox, low roof-line and massive 22-inch wheels, the design is targeted at driving enthusiasts looking for a bold design but who can't fit the family in a two-door coupe.

I'm pleased that Ford is thinking of a V8, rear wheel drive "interceptor", but a little too much Chrylser in this one for me. What happened to the 427 concept? I recently had a Dodge Magnum rental and the major thing I didn't like about it was the arm resting on the window sill. I'm 6'5" and my elbow was up around my ear level.
45K doesn't deter me - by the time that Ford replaces the Panther platform that won't be that much.
For me I'll keep the Marauder....there's nothing out there that compares with it in my humble opinion.

Just read this weeks Autoweek.

Why is it not acceptable for Ford to create other cars based on the platform that they use for the Mustang? It does not make every car a 'Mustang'

Using the same 'platform' across various models and car types isn't new nor unique to Ford. The 'new' Camaro when ever GM does produce it, will be based on a platform that will see multi vehicle use. I don't read anyone complaining about that.

The thing looks very much like a Chip Foose design. It looks just behind the curve. Those lines and giant wheels are going to be out in another couple years. Looks like a cheese ride to me.

I'd repaint my MM and put a blower on it before I'd spend over 30K for another Ford or Lincoln Mercury product.

Remember it's only a concept, and those pictures are art not even of the real thing.

If it is built, it will likely not have those wheels, but maybe 18"ers, a 3V 4.6, and the six speed auto.
Might even have a base engine offering of the V6.

Have to say "upon further review" I like it much better than from just the initial photos. Seems a little bigger than from the pics (a good thing) and it did sound nice. Im wondering how the engine would breath as the grille seems totally blocked off. If a production version was made with the same proportions (ie keep the low roof/small windows, keep the same wheels/tires) Id have to strongly consider it. Thanks for posting the vid.

Beautiful car !
Sure that cops would prefer it to any Charger.
Let's imagine : FORD would sell it to Taxi and Police fleets. Means that there would be an "Interceptor" variant. With some more chrome, it would also be sold by Mercury and would replace the Grnd Marquis. Then we are very close to a more attractive - limited serie - Marauder version !

FORD, please make this car, sell it and come up soon with an updated "Hurricane V8" Marauder !

Ford won't make it, unless they grow some balls. And if they do, it will only be overseas or something stupid like that (in Ford's infinate wisdom). ha ha
I say they are ready for a new version of the Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis. If it goes this Chrysler 300 route, I'm sure they will offer the neutered versions to us poor folk and (if they do offer the 400 hp) the SRT8 only available to the rich and police (but most police will undoubtably opt for the neutered version too). Doubt the fleets would even need the SRT8ish version. I like the interior but the seats look very uncomfortable. I say Ford should act like its got a pair and make a few and see what happens. Me, I like the current look of our cars better but they didn't put 400 horses in them.

RCSignals

It's not a "Chrysler 300" route.
It's nothing like the Chrysler 300, which is a high waisted pants grandpa looking thing.

This 'Interceptor' obviously draws largely on the previous Ford 427 concept.

Two things: I may be in the minority but I can't stand these low-profile low-visiblity greenhouse windows on these. A bit more glass please. Also, the tire sizes are just getting ridiculous. Remember when our 18"ers were something unique? This looks like the batmobile with those tires.

Ford's pricing on their cars mystifies me. Where do they come up with these figures? The $ on ours is in the drive train, and the seats and instruments are nice. But the fit and finish on things like the center console and other plastic trim is really not that great. I have had one center console ($155) replaced already under warranty. I'm not complaining as I got a good deal on mine, but I just rented a 2007 Impala for a week while my MM was in the shop, and the console, glove box, door trim, carpet fit, and seat adjustment were all the same idea as ours but done much better. You could actually lean over the console without it creaking and cracking. I am 6'8" and I could almost stretch my legs full length. Not near as much fun to drive though...!

My concern, at what point do these low-profile windows become a safety issue? If your in an accident (heaven forbid) and the doors won't open, how are you suppose to cram yourself through these "eye slits" for windows?

Hey, the article in the link says "Like the Mustang, the car is rear-wheel drive with a solid rear axle." Is there a non-solid axle? ;)
4-Wheel Independent Suspension.

4-Wheel Independent Suspension.

That reminds me... I'm getting tired of the automotive press dumping on the 'Stang for having a solid rear axle. I've had the '05 for just over a year, put 25k on the odometer, and Ford did a pretty darned good job with this car. Last time I checked, the public roadways weren't Laguna Seca, and it's pretty rare that anyone gets the chance to hot lap Houston at speeds that'd expose any difference in their rear axle setup.

Go into a bumpy corner and you'll understand why IRS is a good thing. It's called "unsprung weight".

Wasn't trying to put solid rear axle cars down--just answer the man's question. The key to how any car rides and handles is in the total suspension system. I've owned some solid axle cars that were great automobiles, and I've had some 4-wheel independent suspension cars that were pretty inferior specimens.

The biggest improvement that I've seen in a motor vehicle in years was when Ford went to independent rear suspension in the Exploder and Exhibition. Made all the ride/control difference in the world. The keys to a great suspension system are design and good components. Either suspension system is lousy, if you try to do it on the cheap. By and large, if you use equal quality components, the 4-wheel independent suspension system rides and controls better than solid rear axle. So goes physics.

See, thats the problem. FOMOCO will make this on the cheap for them ( family, board members, bean counters) and expensive for us. Yes, I unnerstan big business...hold the pontificating on that subject. But remember, Elena killed the program ( and Babcocks job ) so I envision the same course of action.

PS: I think I have anger issues with the fact that she screwed up and refuses to admit it.
