View Full Version : Torque Modulation?
Okay all you tune writers and gurus. I need to know, exactly what is torque modulation and what does it effect on upshifts? Also, does it have any effect outside of WOT? This is of course pertaining to an aftermarket tuner. I thought I'd ask before I destroy something in my quest to learn via trial and error!
Thanks,
J
Usually the torque reduction feature is optimized for maximum power in a performance base tune from any tuning company.
Jman,
Torque modulation is when the puter actually backs off power to the motor during a shift in conjunction with the shift pressures to give you that nice mushy can't feel it shift. Setting it to 1 or zero should remove any trace of it and allow full torque when shifting. I do not know if this is applied at WOT only.

The transmission calibrator for a given program and transmission has the freedom to invoke torque mod to smooth out the inertia phase of any shift. I think it actually the case that there is usually MORE torque mod (as a percentage of mean torque during the shift) in non-WOT situations. Typically, the calibrator's philosophy is that if a customer is at WOT, he is going to prefer the torque not to be truncated, and will gladly tolerate the inertia bump (kick in the seat of his pants) in order to get max acceleration of the vehicle.

Oh heck yeah! That's the funnest part of the tune! Now if people would only stay outta my way so I coud get to that 1-2 WOT shift.....

There are several ways to reduce torque. You can control torque output during an upshift, downshift and you can limit torque in a particular gear. All pull spark to achieve torque reduction. You can also reduce torque during throttle tip-in. Unless you making a lot of power without any trans modifications, you will not want to reduce torque during a shift -except- for the 3-4 shift. I run something like 60% torque on this shift to help prolong the life of my OD band.

Thanks all, you guys are great! I appreciate the assistance - Lord knows I'm gonna need more down the road:burnout: !
Thanks again,
