View Full Version : Modify OEM airbox?
I really don't want the hassle of foam filters, and the intake noise doesn't appeal to me. I'd give up the few horsepower a CAI provides to not have both of those. But is there a way to mod the factory airbox so that it flows better?

And remove and plug, what I call the Gonzo nose......The J looking thingamabob coming out of the side of the inlet tube.

I'm not sure what else you could do to gain a few more ponies out of the stock air box. You could remove the "snorkel" like Blackmobile stated. You could cut a few pieces out like Rich mentioned. Wrap it in that heat stuff maybe? To keep it as cool as possible.

I drilled a dozen 1/2 inch holes in the bottom of the stock box and used a stock filter. Had it dyno'd and then installed a CAI and had it dyno'd again and it only gained 4 hp more at the rear wheels with this change.
The stock filters breath very well.

home depot. 2" plumbing plug. price around 4 bucks. part is 2 metal discs w/ rubber ribbing in the middle. screw the thing tighter and it fills in the gap. The picture may look like it stands out but it really doesn't live view

That would also be known as the helmholtz resonator (or walrus nose).

What is that thing anyway?

'cause it looks stupid and serves little purpose. I used a 2" PVC cap from the plumbing dept at Ace (<$1), a little paint to match and a stainless hose clamp. The PVC cap fits almost perfectly.

As air passes the opening of the resonator it hits a frequency that quiets the noise of the intake air flow. It is a common on cars to have one or several of these along the intake tube. Some people, however, like to hear their engine sound a little more pissed off.
There was a nice little write up explaining the helmholtz resonator in an issue of Popular Mechanics a while ago.

K&N makes a drop in for our cars, cotton gauze, flows (a few extra ponies) better than stock. I didn't even bother cleaning just bought a new one when needed.
Removing the J-Tube will not increase hp, but it will increase intake noise.

I just cut the closed end of the "J" tube off and used it to plug the opening. I have some pics of the mod I did to my stock airbox. Too big to post here so PM me your email & I'll send them to you.

2" plastic plumbing cap with a 2.5" hose clamp also works well.
Just spray paint the end of the cap flat black.

You know what. That's a great idea. I wish I had thought of that:)
