View Full Version : Winter tire sizing combo

Ok so I need some help making sure I get the right tire size before I order the tires. Snow could be coming any day now and I need some winter tires. Now I do not want to go with the tirerack 215(front) 225(rear) combo setup. Like Dragcity (Joe) I want the width and height. He runs 235/70SR16 in the front and 265/70R16 in the rear. Tirerack has the fronts in stock but they don't sell the rear size anymore.

The option for the rear is 255/70SR16 or 265/75SR16. I'd like to go with the the 265/75 but is the 75 going to be too tall for the rear and would it safely fit on the CVPI 16x7 wheel?

Front - 235/70SR16
Rear - ? ? ? ? ?

Not an expert on this but the 235/70/16 are 28.9" tall. They should probably go on the rear and try to find another shorter tire for the front. Also I think if you go with anything wider you will be looking at a wider rim. Just my .02.

Dragcity has no problem with his setup 235/70SR16(Front) 265/70R16(Rear) on the CVPI 16x7 steel wheels. I think the 255/70SR16 is what I'll probably go with but I wanted to see if I could do the 265/75SR16 since I want max width for traction purposes.

Large and in charge lol

I put together an Excel spreadsheet to assist in determining what diameter would work for select front or rear diameters.

If you want it, I can send it to your e-mail. My e-mail is jndragcity@yahoo.com

I will have to look up the dimensions of the rears you are looking at. I know you can't suff anything taller in the back.

That sure is one beautiful DTR in that pic. And so clean after such a long drive that day....

There is no way the 265/75-16 are going to fit, unless you want to trim the fenders....

The 255/70-16s should work out at 30.2" tall.

Thanks Joe! The tires are the Winterforce M+S. I figured I wouldn't be able to stuff the 265/75 underneth the rear but I just wanted to make sure. I'm going to order the 235/70 and 255/70's right now.

Yeah it looked like a new car after the bucket of water, either way you made heads turn when you pulled in lol.

You guys do realize that narrower tires are bette for the winter, right? ;)

IIRC Some people here were running 215/65R16 in the Front, and 225/70R16 in the rear with no problems on MMs with Traction Control.

Exactly. The wider tire is just going to make you push the snow. Any good snow plow contractor knows the skinnier snow tire the better traction.

A little bit than one year ago, I adressed to 5 FML dealers in Quebec, Alberta and Manitoba.

ALL dealers recommended the 225 front and rear Blizzack tires, on 16 " wheels. ALL of them told me that 265 and whatever other combo - even if looking nice - would cause problems with T/C and moreover, would not secure a good adherence. 2 dealers added that if I wanted the 265/235 combo, they could sell it to me. But both of them suggested that I stay with the Goodrich summer tires as "they could even do better on snow or ice than the said combo" for much less bucks spent.

Assuming that Canadians know about winter, I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

I asked about the size in ctrlraven's thread in the garage as well. I guess they don't get nearly as much snow as us Canucks do. I'm running 215-65-16 on the front and 215-70-16s on the back, Pirelli Scorpion snow tires. No problems with the traction control at any speeds. Actually, I turn off the T/C for more fun.:D

Everybody has made very good points in this thread. I know I am breaking a few basic rules with my snow tire sizing, but it has worked well for me.

It is true that thinner tires cut through the snow better than wider. There is a sacrafice to that, which is less tire contact on dry/wet roads. We in Buffalo/Rochester experience much more dry/wet conditions than SNOW conditions.

I drive my Marauder every day, Rain, Sun, Snow, Ice and anything else you can imagine. Taking all things into consideration, I selected tall, medium width tires for my application. I have driven in 2 feet of snow on my setup, and been able to go without narry a glitch.

Because I drive on the highway daily, I chose the sizes I did to not sacrafice too much width. OEM width is 9.6 & 9.9" F/R respectively. My winter set-up is 7.5 & 8.5 F/R respectively.

How thin are YOU willing to go???

I have them, just not sure if I want to put them on. I dunno I'll ask some of my local car buddies and see what they think with covers on or off.

Chris, do you still want/need the set of CVPI rims that I have?

If not, just let me know as I will place them in the MM.net classified Ads.
