Yesterday on the way home from work I was runnin with a guy on a Yamaha crotch rocket. I see the guy maybe once or twice a week and we romp on a fairly unpopulated 4-lane divided stretch of US-1. Speeds get up to 80 to 100 depending on traffic and conditions...

Well yesterday, this guy in a primered up Ford Escort GT joins the run. The motorcyclist and I both backed off, not quite sure what this apparent moron was up to. Eventually the biker makes a light and leaves me next to the Escort. The driver rolls down his window and says, "Hey, whatchu got done to that thing?". I say "Not much." He then informs me he has a 4psi twin electric supercharger and he can take me. I really tried not to laugh. So with a straight face, I go, "That's cool, man." He goes on to babble about more crapola about how it's got a special transmission, blah blah. I point to the still red light and he nods.

Green it is. A little chirp from the tires. He's already in the rear-view. Run her thru first, bang-chirp, hit second at 45. He's 3 car lengths back. Lift off at 50 (the posted limit) and I can hear his little motor all wound out from about 5 car lengths back. What was he thinking?!

What a moron. This can't count as a 'kill' story except for homeboy's ego. Normally, I wouldn't even waste the fuel, but this guy needed a reality check.

Ha Ha, Way to go Rich. Some where on the scale between tricycle races as 4 year olds and John Force ( or whe ever the current bad ass is ) we all fit, even the wanna be in the escort. He will someday make it into something faster with any luck. It is just a remote possibility that someone somewhere thinks that 4 door cars over 2 tons running even 10.5's is stupid. That maybe leaves the rest of us even further from the tree of meaningful fruit. I love all of our Marauders and mine gives me great pleasure. I hope the kids in the Civics and the Escorts are having just as much fun as we are. Your kid kicks a lot of GM and CV asses, no doubt. He will learn. Thanks for the fun, Professor Magindat. Twin Hair Dryer Motors! WOOWOOO!!!

YOu know those cars were based loosely off the Mazda 323/Protege.

The 1.9L SOHC (Pony and LX) had 87 HP.

If you have the GT or the rare LX-E Sedan, it had the 1.8L DOHC good for 127 HP or something like that. :burnout:

Joe, not to be off-topic, but when are you going to put that blow dryer in your car ? Don't put it in below 25 degrees or you will freeze your A$$ off and void the warranty.

I think the original GTs and EXPs ran about 115hp back in '87. Back then, that was a lot for a compact. And, I think, the Escorts were well ahead of the sport compact craze. They were a clear hoot to drive. Accelleration, for 1987 was decent, but braking and handling were pure joy. Those things were rock solid. They also made a turbo version in North America, though I saw only one personally. Then, of course, there is the Cossy. Please let me know when one of you lines up against one of those. You'll have a momentary panic attack when you realize you might just get blown away by an "Escort" :) Keep in mind, at 180hp (dyno tested), my Tempo had about the same power to weight as a stock MM. Its why I had to start modding right away. It just wasn't any different than driving the v-6 5speed Tempo, and with the mandatory automatic, a lot less fun.
I've had a coulpe of people show up to the dyno with electric blowers, and once you do the math for them they realize how badly they've wasted their money. Once you do the dyno run they insist on having, you show them how they've just managed to waste another sixty bucks. Generally, cars make more power without those little parasites. All they do is impede the flow through the intake tract. Very sad that people pay for these rip-off items.

OOOH! Another V6 Tempo Fan! I always wanted one, but they were too rare. When I was growing up, I always loved the way the tempo was (except the automatic seat belts)

My dream is a Tempo GLS V6 5 Speed.....rare as hen's teeth....Where's Mike Poore with his Aerostar?

He probably just blew a fuse. He should have used circuit breakers, then you'd have been sorry!

I bought a 87 Escort GT new. As stated above it was quite the car for the money back then. Factory installed long tube header, unique intake, ground effects spoilers that actually worked at speed, etc. I loved that car and surprized quite a few people with it. IIRC, they 118HP that moved a light weight car quite well. Kept her for 5 years, thats a record for me :) .

Poor little fella, brought a knife to a gun fight. Speaking of electric superchargers though, I did have a friend mention to me the other day at school, that he was planning on adding one to his truck, I couldn't make up my mind on whether or not I wanted to laugh, or explain to him that it would be a complete waste. I ended up nodding and laughing to myself, knowing a whole lot of things that he didn't.

I've always wondered about Ford and their "horsepower" ratings in the '80's. I owned an '87 T-Bird Turbo Coupe way back, and Ford claimed it put out "only" 190 HP. Maybe my memory is faulty, but that car, with its itsy-bitsy 140 CID 4 banger, ran like a scalded cat!
Does anyone know anyone whi might have dyno'd one of those things? I'd be curious to know what the actual numbers were.

Thats Usually the way it works when talking to other young kids about cars, their lack of knoledge makes them sound like complete idiots but because cars or anything mechanical are cool topics to know and talk about kids just throw out random bs to make them sound manly. Its all an ego thing just like the retard in the escort. I say if you dont know anything just shut up!

Funny you should mention that, I just picked up an 87 turbo coupe for a winter beater. It feels pretty strong, I might put it on a dyno in the near future. The results might be off though as boost is limited to 10psi in 3rd gear and up, 15psi in 1st & 2nd. So far the only mods are air silencer removed and cat delete by a previous owner.

Winter beater :D Just be careful in the snow, because snow is EXACTLY why I got rid of my 'Bird. Mine was a stick, and I found that the turbo would "kick in" at the most inopportune times imagineable. That car was the one car I've ever owned that'd swap nose for tail faster than I knew what happened, and I spun it out a least 5 times in two years. On dry pavement, it was a blast, but she's dicey when icey.
Invest in snow tires!

I figured that one out all by myself. :) Took it to an empty, icy parking lot and went to town drifting it around cart corrals, now the turbo seems almost predictable in slippery condtions. It has some cheap snow tires on it now, it'll probably make it through this winter, but I want to put some Nokian's on it in the near future.

The rule we use for winter beaters are to find the most ridiculous car we can find that has usable parts that we can strip off afterwards. I was looking for a Lincoln MKVII or maybe a van or station wagon when I found the Tbird. I have a couple of Mopar friends that always have the weirdest winter cars imaginable. One guy has a 63 Fury wagon slant 6 that used to be an ambulance (still has instructions for using oxygen tanks on the roof). Another has a 69 Coronet 440 V8 auto, 4000rpm stall converter and 10" drum brakes. The good thing about winter driving here is that we don't get a lot of snow like out east, it just gets extremely cold which makes traction on snow and ice better.
