OK, better late than never. The owner's manual in my '04 says 6 quarts with filter. When I had someone change it for me due to my MD telling me no car work right now, 6 qts puts the level just above the little mark for full. What is the capacity of the engine with a new filter? Thanks in advance.

Like it says - 6qts
Note - If you read a few lines down from that in the owner's manual, you will see it says slightly above the full mark immediately following oil change is normal.
Also, jsut because it takes 6qts doesn't mean that 6qts will ALWAYS come out and need to be replaced. There can be a lot of oil sitting up in those DOHC cylinder banks if it ran shortly before ;) In which case 6qts would slightly overfill.

dan, although my owner's manual doesn't state what Derek said above^^^ about being slightly overfull after an oil change (my '94 T-bird's manual DID, however), he is right. Many owner's manuals state that the specified oil fill quantity is approximate and that the refill amount should actually be determined by the dipstick reading. Even though you're reading slightly over-full, if your friend put 6 qts in (and not more) I wouldn't worry about it.

Bob, your getting slow in your old age. It took you 12hrs and 15mins to find this oil thread.

I put 6 1/2 qts in mine because 6 qts only goes up half way into the shaded area on the dip stick.

The reason the dipstick reads so much oil right after the change is that the oil has not pumped into the oil filter yet. Always take the reading AFTER you start up the engine for a few minutes and wait about 30 minutes after shut-down so the oil drains back into the pan. Make sure the car is on a level surface. This isn't a written rule, just something you pick up over time.

six quarts puts the level in the same place on the stick for me too, not quite to the 'full' mark.
I wonder if he has the wrong dipstick?
