View Full Version : My wing is taped on. Where do bolts thread in so I can bolt it?

Hi guys, my stock type (but aftermarket installed) wing is attached only with double sided body tape. It does not use the stock bolting locations to attach it. Did the stock wings use only the bolts, or were they taped and bolted?

How do the bolts attach a stock wing? Are they studs moded into the wing, or do bolts thread into the wing? I don't want to tear off my wing to find out that the hack who installed it cut off studs and it can only be taped now. The tape has held up pretty well but one corner is starting to pull.

:) The factory OEM spoiler is bolted on with I believe four bolts not studs into the spoiler, and two sided tape around the perimeter of spoiler. There are two bolts on each side of trunk lid accessible from underneath. I put one of these spoilers on my Grand Marquis after having it painted to match. I get lots of positive comments about it.

Hope this helps you.

This may be some bad news, but the time to drill the holes for the bolts to install the spoiler was before you put it on with the double side tape. It is possible this was done already. Open the trunk and look for four approximately 1" in diameter holes that are in the area that makes the bend from the flat undeside portion of the trunk to the vertical inside back (away from the hinges) side of the lid. They should be plugged with some black plastic covers.

The install kit has some guides that go on the lid and mark the holes to drill for the four short bolts that go in from the inside of the lid into the backside of the spoiler. The rest of the template is to drill the four access holes to install the bolts. These access holes are what is covered by the black covers.

For what it worth, I have the spoilers on all 3 of our MM's and I have noticed that they all seem to be pulling away slightly at each end. You only see it if you sight down along the edge. I just chalked it up to being a black car in the 120 degree heat of the past few summers.

Good luck..

I noticed the same thing on mine. It's not noticeable to most people, but I can see it.

VicsEvilBrother (and anyone else in the same situation), the factory spoiler is attached with 4 bolts. The double-sided tape is supposed to be weather-stripping only; it's not designed to hold the spoiler in place by itself.

There are moulded-in threaded bosses in the spoiler, and proper installation requires the drilling of 4 holes in the trunk lid. This scares some people and I've heard of other cases where the spoiler was just glommed on using only the weather stripping. In some of those cases I'll bet it was done that way by an unscrupulous dealer since it saved installation time and they figured the owner would never notice.

By all means, get that thing properly secured before it falls off on the highway this summer. I have the installation instructions and templates in ready-to-email form if anyone would like them. Just send me a PM with your e-mail address.

In understand where the bolts are supposed to be. Trust me, they are not there. I have done body kit installations before. This wing was taped on by some dumbass who was trying to save time. It is not going to be a big deal to take the wing off, drill the holes, and do it again. I just needed to know that it used bolts and not studs before I go ripping this thing off. RF, if you can email me templates to steven.hylinski@villanova.edu, that would be great. Drilling through will be fine as long as you use blue masking tape on the painted surface.

The original used bolts, but you could use studs. Email sent.

on the topic of rear spoilers..
Are the factory spoilers a sold piece? i would think that its not a solid peice of fiberglass, i'm assuming its hollow, but is it enclosed on all 3 sides? or is the side that mates to the trunk open, making it a C shaped profile?

It does add a little weight to the trunk lid but not so much that the trunk won't stay open.

i already have one on my car, i wasnt worried about the weight, i was thinking of trying my Sirius antenna in the spoiler, since IIRC it will receive signal through fiberglass

Bunny, R U sure it's hollow? I thought the interior cavity was filled with that self-expanding foam...

Jim, your silver car is very sharp. I would have bought that color over black in a second if I had found one locally that was as low mileage as the one I bought and in the same 20k'ish price range. Is the blue one a repaint or was it available in that color as a promo or something?

The spoiler is definitely hollow.

Blue was available only in 2003. I believe there are only 326 made. By far the rarest MM's.

Hollow, meaning it's not solid fiberglass. That would weigh too much. I'll go with Zack's answer!
