View Full Version : Twin Screw Project

Here is the latest project we started, while waiting on Todd's hood to come back for his turbo Marauder. This is a 03 A built by Paul's HP the car was bought new. Paul installed a built Lentech transmission, a brand new 03 Cobra crate motor, did some exhaust work. Stayed with the 355 gears, and stock converter, so the owner now would like to have more. So here is what we have decided on, the new Whipple twin screw Kooks LTH a PI 2800 triple disk, 60 pound injectors CP fuel rails twin GT fuel pumps new Kinsler turbo blue filter SCT B2800, the blower will have a 3.5 upper pulley with the 9" Metco lower, this comes out at about 19 PSI, along with this we are going through the entire rear end upgrading to a 31 spline carrier with mosser 31 spline axial's and 4:10 gears, we sent out his rear calipers and hardware and had them powder coated red along with the cross drilled rotors. We also added Metco rear control arms, And as you can see it does look good, the car does have after market 20" wheels there coming off and the stock Marauder wheels are going back on, with widened rims in the back. So I will post pictures as this progresses.

Some guys have all the fun! I like the red powder-coating. I don't fully understand all that techie stuff, but it sounds like it will produce an insane amount of horsepower when completed.
I guess PHP is really out of their control arms, if not I can't imagine why they would use Metco instead of their own on their car. I'm guessing the red ones that look like they have seen a bit of action are the initial prototype php control arms that Mac once mentioned.
Where did you read he is running Metco's?
I have seen the car in person more than once and rest assured, he has his own control arms on there.

Isn't that the car they kept blowing the tranny in?
Well when a car makes over 500 rwhp and RWT a stock rearend and or axails do not go far, ask Marti.
This car now had a Manual transmission designed for a car weighing a thousand less. It now has a totaly new transmission system installed.
Not a fan of the headlights or grille. If you buy the car I will change the head lights
but I think it would looks sweet with 03 cobra rims all around and that is the drivetrain we should have got from the factory.

PHP never installed Metco I did, I replaced them at the customers request.
And Yes Paul has quit selling his C/A as he did with the CAK he sells these only to my company.

What Transmission is in it now? If it's still a T-56 what was done to beef it up to handle being used in a car this heavy?
As far as the Control Arms I totally misunderstood and for some reason thought that PHP still owned that car.
Are there any pics of the interior specifically of the pedals and shifter.

I spoke to Jeff at Paul's today and the Whipple twin screw will be here Friday, we have finished the rebuild on the rear end, new 31 spline Carrier Mosire axial's 4:10 gears. The brakes in the rear are done we sent the front 14" KVR hats out to be re'powder coated. We will remove twin Cobra pumps and install the new upgraded GT pumps, install 60 pound injectors a new SCT B2800 Maf, install the blower and re-tune the car, more pictures to follow.

I know where Rich has his stuff posted, I happen to have my batt. in the trunk too. The point is that the link that is put in place of his link is not informative, it is not really a representation of how it works on our cars, trust me, it's the electric system on a fox body... at first it seems ok, but it is just very misleading... but whatever mis information is the name of the game I guess... have fun running in circles :D

The name of the game in this thread is about a Whipple install and the upgrades associated with this, it then went off topic, the first link was invalid the second link went to another web site where you had to go through the thread to another link, so I posted a direct link to the referenced article, this thread is about the the topic I started, lets keep it on track, Brian just started a thread. Will get PICTURES there I am sure.

The rear brakes are now done I am waiting on the KVR front hats to come back from the powder coater, and will get them back on, Steve has taken the stock Cobra blower off, and we are getting ready to install the Whipple, now on the stock Cobra it has a Map sensor mounted in the intake this sensor is also used for IAT and we are going to utilize this so we do not have to drill and tap the intake.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/6/03cobramap.jpg
The Whipple has this hole for the transfer of this sensor all we did was order the correct plug so now the EEC will see real IAT, we will post more pictures when we can, we are waiting on several sets of Kooks which are on a three week back order, and then we should be ready to light this puppy off.

I remember reading about an install that did with an 03 Cobra into a pre-03 Panther chassis that chose to cut the frame. Didn't like that idea very much.
Does the alt clear the stock frame and ABS mounting here? Was there some work to make this clear? Any chance of being able to change the alt w/o pulling the engine?

Good questions John. I'm thinking if it were the case the Trilogy set up would have put the alternator where it is on the Cobra.

Tom Doan had a 03 Cobra engine with SC installed in his car and they fabricated the alternator backet so as not notch the frame, this is the only route I would go.

Ok here is the update on Big Al's car the Whipple is on, Al sent his kooks out and had them jet coated and we finally got them, Al has been gone, the Transmission is back in with a PI 2800 Triple Disk, he hated the Dyno max so he had drove may car with Kooks and my stock muffler set up and liked that so that is what he wanted, so we ordered NEW mufflers and tips from Ford don't ask the price, the stock OEM is all one piece, there is no way to get the them out with out cutting them, but as I said Al had the OEM replaced with Dyno max, now as you can see in the photos the new OEM mufflers and pipes from Ford unbolt which is neat, so Steve, has it in we are shortening the X pipe and adapting it to fit, the stock mufflers so we do not have to weld it together, also you will see where the remote oil filter was mounted, and had to be moved because of the Kooks and its now going to be located up front under the LF bumper splash panel , we should have the car ready for the dyno next week.

first of all I'm not bashing the work or the mufflers/tail pipes used.
But all that money spent in front of those stock (2"inch) mufflers will never be felt . I read they cost a lot , and I feel as it was money waisted. The huffer , and all the Kooks goodies are a good idea but you went the wrong way useing that small muffler. I'll bet they don't stay on there long. Oh and by the way I know what I'm talking about , been doing it for 30 years this year!! :shake:

Maybe it won't make AS MUCH power as it would with bigger mufflers, but it'll still make good power. Glenn stayed with his stock mufflers when he upgraded the rest of the system and his car is quite impressive (and quiet). I know of a few others making 400-450 rwhp with stock mufflers too.

Please do not misunderstand my statement, but your 30 years experience is fine, I have no idea what you are talking about when you say But all that money spent in front of those stock (2"inch) mufflers. In case you missed it, there 2.5" from Kooks.
I respect your opinion but, I simply say your wrong in my opinion!!, I have this system on my car it sounds great its quiet, and that it is what I want, you do what ever your heart desires, I have been at this for as long as any body when it comes to a 03/04 Marauder. I never said I was the smartest Marauder builder in the world, but I do know what works for me, and I post the numbers to PROOF IT. This system has 0%, no DROWN, and the car makes 535 RWHP 465 RWT. ENOUGH SAID.
You want to gain 10 RWHP and have your car drown at 65 MPH and drive the car to any where that is your choice with a headache, thats cool mine is different.
Here is what I found today, my car GAINED 19 RWHP with a simple air cleaner change, the below dyno sheet is back to back pulls, (no COOL down), I had a B2800 in a suck through, I went to the new 05 GT Blow through, I left the B2800 with a air cleaner on the the Maf, and the restriction once lifted gained me 19 RWHP.
Blue is before RED is after. And so you do not misconstrue the A/F, it is shown with a tail pipe sniffer. I dyno with both the TPS and a CDS wide band the difference is 1% the AF with the wide band was 11.4, prefect in IMHOP, but I have Siemens 60LB Inj, Aeromotive fuel rails and the car leaned out .4% at 6K showing a 100% percent F/P duty cycle, this car has the stock fuel lines, it will be changed tomorrow to a Dash 8 braided steel line, and it will resolve this issue. I will let my track times speak for them selves. At 467 RWHP on a stock motor with 65K on the clock, the car ran 11.6 at 118 MPH on the exact same exhaust system you critiqued.
And I had no hidden nitrous bottle besides popular disbelief.
And Al's car will make a Min of 600 RWHP and over 500 RWT enough to put the car in a roll cage classification. Still run on 93 octane and take his wife to church, in comfort, and not sound like a Mustang, with LTH and dyno max mufflers and drive you nuts on a long trip.

Many of us "soon to be senior citizens" have learned over the years to appreciate a powerful car with a quiet exhaust.
About 40 years ago, a friend driving his '65 Pontiac LeMans got a view of his girlfriends rapidly disappearing tailights (in an informal drag-race). She was in her daddies big block (and very quiet) 4 door Oldsmobile.
Fast and quiet. You don't need noise to go fast on the street.

What muffler would you recommend for one who wants increased performance but still wants to keep the noise down?
Magnaflow or Ford Dual Mode mufflers. Either one would be fine. Dyno Max mufflers are cheap stuff.

I have them on my car and truck and they don't make a difference unless it's ran by a Carb. Just my experience. ;)

first of all I'm not bashing the work or the mufflers/tail pipes used.
............................ Oh and by the way I know what I'm talking about , been doing it for 30 years this year!! :shake:
You notice the reason they are cockeyed and not tucked up in this picture:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/6/DSC00244.jpg
Is because the mufflers and tail pipes are hanging loose, not yet fully connected. As in this picture:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/6/DSC00254.jpg
I would hope the final connections make the install all squared away.

I try to post informative information and step by step pictures, if they would have looked up they would have seen this. Again I did what the owner wanted.

And the tail pipes did line up after this. Dam, I am sorry I took the picture before Steve installed the other two clamps, and its done this way so the exhaust can be dropped with out cutting it.

So, what is your issue w/ the Exhaust? The fact that he bolted a set of Kooks up to a stock muffler back setup, or that clamps were used?

you still don't understand what I'm telling you. You stated the mufflers are new stock Ford items. THE STOCK mufflers are NOT 2.5" units. You are stupid if you think all that big tubing and forced induction are not harmed by being pushed through that little hole. I'm not saying it won't work. All I'm saying is that it isn't the best way to go. And please don't offer anymore of your rambling on explantions .
uote=Dennis Reinhart;492095]Please do not misunderstand my statement, but your 30 years experience is fine, I have no idea what you are talking about when you say But all that money spent in front of those stock (2"inch) mufflers.

Unless a picture of that gets posted we'll never know. If you look at the pictures of the mufflers connected though, they look square and level, so the tips should be as well.
The tail pipes are OEM, who makes them for Ford? Arvin Meritor?

Well we got the car on the dyno Friday, and the car made 524 RWHP and 526 RWT the car sounds like a rocket, the ACT was a bit high but it was a hot day, I took the car to the track Sat, and after one pass I just did not feel the car was right, so I came home and we looked at the Data and the ACT at the track was very high, so the EEC was pulling a bunch of timing as it is supposed to, so I looked at the the IC plumbing, this car has a 03 Cobra setup it uses the dinky Cobra reservoir, as shown below to the right of the air box.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/6/stockreservoir.jpg
Now I looked at the stock reservoir and traced the drain or suction side which is located at the bottom of the reservoir, that should feed directly to the inlet of the electric water after cooler pump, for some reason it was pulling water from heat exchanger up front, this was probably done in error by a shop down south but know matter, this was wrong. How it should work is this, water is pulled from the reservoir to the inlet of the pump, then this water is pushed through the heat exchanger up front then fed in to the SC IC the water is heated up by the boost comes out of the SC IC and is pumped to the reservoir, well as you can see even if working properly the reservoir can only hold a minimal amount of water, so since this car has the big vacant spot on the drivers side, we installed the Vortech 2 gallon reservoir.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/6/VORTRESERVOIR.jpg
Then we rerouted all the plumbing, fixed a bad relay that powers two mini fans on the heat exchanger, put the car back on the dyno did 2 pulls and the car just did not feel right but the IAT was down to 120 degrees that is very good for 19 lbs boost, so we let the car cool down. We pulled the plugs and they were 22c and they looked like they had some miles on them and we checked the gap they were .40 to .43 way to wide so we installed a set of NGK TR6 gaped them to .32 did a pull and the car was aw-some. Made 551 RWHP and 527 RWT this is on a stock 03 Cobra motor, if this car had a manual transmission the car would me making over 650 to the tires, so I am very happy with these numbers the AF could be .05% leaner and still be safe, I am taking this car and mine to Gainesville Wednesday, I will post the numbers then.
