View Full Version : terrible gas mileage after Xcal2

Hey guys...
I got my Xcal2 in almost two weeks ago, and I love the difference in power and shifting, but my gas mileage has dropped almost 33%.
I always fill up at 1/4 of a tank left. Before the tune, I would go 280-300 miles (roughly 100 miles per quarter tank). With the tune, I made it to 1/2 tank at 150 miles, and filled up again, then I made it to 1/4 tank with 200 miles. I then returned back to stock, and got about 50 more miles out of it before fillup.
I'm going to test my mileage on this tank with the stock tune and see if it climbs back up. I'm not sure why it was such a dramatic decrease, because I thought I would see a slight increase in mpg.
Any suggestions? Do I need to disconnect the battery for 15 minutes after installing the tune?
Any help is appreciated... thanks in advance
-Daniel

Ever think that you are now heavy into the throttle testing out the new found performance and thats whats killing your mileage?

It could be that, or it could be bad gas, the files I use are constantly revised, and they are tried and proven in more than one car so if it was a mistake in the file more than one person would have this issue, regardless we'll figure this out.

you should work out the actual milage not just miles/parts of the guage??

Miami traffic + BIG foot = POOR fuel mileage!!:D
My fuel mileage actually went up abut 15% with SCT tune but most of my driving is Highway!!
Dennis will work it out for ya!!;)

...you must compute fuel mileage properly. Read your owners manual. Your technique is bogus!

I didn't see a 33% drop, but I did get a 7 % drop. It went from about 19.2 to 17.8. These numbers are consistent tank after tank. This is on the same driving circuit, same winter gas, same winter tires, same driving habits. The only difference was the change from the stock tune to Dennis' 355 tune. I think this may be fairly typical of what to expect.

There have been two fillups since the initial tune. I went through the rest of the first tank very fast testing it out :)
I honestly haven't had a heavy foot since the first fillup.
I know my estimates don't give me the exact mpg, but it's not like my method of measuring it doesn't show a huge difference.

My comment "I think this may be fairly typical of what to expect." was targeted at the 7% change, not your 33% change.

The only way to accurately measure MPG is to measure exact miles between complete fill-ups, i.e. gas up to the neck. Very inaccurate to do using the fuel gauge. In addition, mix of type of driving significantly affects mileage.

90% of my driving is highway. 26 miles each way to work, 52 miles a day.

Dennis,
I just wanted to let you know that I called but no one answered. I didn't leave a message. I'm going to go ahead and reflash with the 3.55 tune and fill her up tonight. After this tank is gone, I'll post my mpg results.
Thanks,
Daniel

make sure you drive it the SAME WAY, and refill at the SAME PUMP and refill to the SAME SPOT!

Performance comes at a price.
One price was the Xcal2.
The second Price was the additional Fuel usage for the additional performance.
The third price will be a Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, etc. setup...

Page 198 of 2003 MM owners manual:
..." Fuel expense, frequency of fill-ups, or fuel gauge readings are NOT accurate as a measure of fuel economy."
page 199 and 200 continue with instructions for calculating proper estimates. Excerpts:
..."Use the same side of the same pump and have the vehicle facing the same direction each time you fill up."...
..."3. After at least three to five fill-ups"...
..."Keep a record for at least one month"...
A single tank fill-up can give an estimate for one tank only.

I installed a reinhart 355 xcal tune on my marauder 2 weeks ago, added plus 2 degrees on 0-2000 and plus one on 2-4000, my MM is faster, more low end torque and much better on gas. Thanks to Dennis and my brother.

Well after a few tanks with Dennis's tune, my gas millage has actually gone up to 18.6 on the last vrs. 17.6 with my last tune. I am worried though, the car seems to run a little too lean. I hear rattling when the motor is cold. That is something that I can adjust since Dennis sends his tunes unlocked, thank you Dennis btw!

Well guys, everything is fixed now. I originally tuned my car with the 3.55 tune. I observed my mileage after starting this thread and noticed that my normal ride to work which is 26 miles, was coming out to 24 miles. I notified Dennis and he told me I had the 4.10 tune.
He sent me the 3.55 tune, I installed it, and my mileage went higher than it should, with my work ride clocking in at 28-29 miles.
Being that my car is used, and I already had the res delete tips from the previous owner, I thought that I may also have 3.73 gears. So I asked Dennis to send me a tune programmed for 3.73s, and that brought me back to 26 miles each way.
I'll find out my mpg when this tank is gone... who the hell would put 3.73s in their marauder?

To clarify the post, this 04 was bought used, and the owner never knew the car had 3:73 installed and its probably the only second Marauder I have heard having them installed, so really the issue was not gas mileage but the odometer being off. So I am glad this has been resolved.

I will be going back to 3.73's or the stock 3.55's soon..... I can see why someone would go back. Depending on how much power the car makes...

I'm not knocking 3.73s... It's a free upgrade for me... but 4.10s seem like the standard. Even Dennis said he's never tuned a Marauder for 3.73s.

I'm seriously thinking about putting in 3.73s or maybe even get weirder and install a set of Motive 3.90s.
The more torque your Marauder makes, the less gear you need.
I drive my Marauder on the highway most often, and I love the 1900 rpms she spins at 65 mph with the 3.55s.

Mileage on mine is about the same, if not better. Took a trip from GVL to Wilmington, NC last weekend, 640+ miles round-trip, averaged 20.7 doing 70-75 mph. Best I got with the 3:55's and stock tune was 21.5, so NBD in my opinion.
