I went and purchased a t/c but now the local trans. shop wants $500 to do the install and of course no guarantee.
Need to know, is it really a marked improvement in performance in an 04 MM or am I wasting my money.
If I do the install would I be better off to take it to a L/M or Ford dealer to do the install?

I paid 400 to do the install, and IT IS WORTH IT!!!!! If i were not doing the trilogy route, i would be keeping my tc! Great investment! Have fun! PM me if you have any questions?

Definitely go w/ it.
Several w/ Trilogy have had excellent results w/ the TC.
Look at Billy G car in the Timeslips.

Cant beat a stall convertor. My installer charged me $250 and I brought him the case of Mercon V to make sure there are no mistakes on fluid.

Hmmm... I have been thinking about this as a possible next upgrade (3000 stall t/c), but will I have to get a retune for it to work correctly? I already have a tune from Lidio.

I DO NOT THINK that a retune is necessary.
But I would call your Vendor of choice to verify.

Hi Ho Ed;
I didn't go racing this past year so I couldn't keep our bet we made on the .ORG site. You don't remember? Good.
But I'm headed to the race track, hopefully, on the 3rd March. This will be my first time with the new PI 3500 stall converter. the car has made a dramatic improvement in low end performance on the street. Gas economy on the highway hasn't suffered.
My cost to install was $392 including fluid 5 quarts of fluid. I also had a tranny oil cooler installed as a bit of insurance in this triple digit temps we get here in NW Louisiana.
My shop guaranteed the installation but not the stall converter since it's a part they don't handle.
The local L/M or Ford dealer should be able to do it but the cost may be higher. They wanted $600 here.
As for a retune, I contacted my tuner and he said to drive the car awhile and if I wanted any changes, he would do them for the usual fee.
My recommendation is this:
With the stock converter drive the car from a standing start at light throttle, like normal day to day driving and write down the speed when the car shifts to 2nd, 3rd and OD, keep the traction control on. Pick a long stretch of road so you won't be interrupted by traffic. also write down the RPM when the shifts occur.
Then drive the car at half throttle like a spirited take off and record the same parameters. They may be different.
After the new converter is installed, repeat and compare the differences.
Relate this info to your tuner and discuss if a retune is needed.

i have never hear someone complain after having a high stall tc installed. i am sure you will love it and a 3200 stall will be in my future.

I had my tuner adjust the lock-up to come in at around 58MPH during normal driving and the lock up is early at WOT.
I have video of a dyno run where the TC lock-up came in a little late and you can hear the engine bog down for a second and then start building power.
The Car drove much better after the re-tune.

Thanks everyone, now one last question, shop said I will get a lot of heat build up. Should I install a trans cooler and can I do that after the t/c is installed

Hi Pat,
I remember the original bet, only my MM is slow. ran 14.7 with a 4:10 rear. Lets see what happens this year.

This has been said if you run a 3500 stall, but other members have ran this stall without a cooler.
I run a 3K stall without a cooler for almost a year of hard driving with no heating issues, My fluid still looks clean and new.

I install an aftermarket trans cooler on all my cars. Cheap insurance. Had one on the Marauder before I decided to get the PI tc.

If you install a trans cooler in hot climates make certain it does not impede the airflow to the radiator or throw hot air on it.

Had the t/c installed. Sorry I waited so long. Looks like a major change in performance. Only problem its raining tonight so I still can't really test it out.

Did you notice any difference with the switch?

Had the install done for $380. Totally different car on acceleration as now I finally have some low end performance. Now I just need to see what happens at the track.

The fun is spooling up the convertor then trying to get traction when you launch.
If you pull this off, you'll feel a huge difference.
