Was making a sales call in a crappy part of town today and came back to my MM and noticed that the passenger's side mirror was broken and hanging by wires .
I manged to push it back on and secured it with a little duct tape .The housing looks intact . I noticed that there was a short length of spring type wire still attached to the broken lens . I'm not sure where this piece should attach . Also I take it that the new lens just pops on?

Has any body else ever replaced this piece?

I ordered just the mirror lens c/w defrost from the dealer and it should be here Friday .

Easy fix. Remove the door panel (pull Up on the panel, not "out")

Pull the little sail panel off, remove the 3 nuts (10 mm iirc) and then use a little flat head to remove the wiring harness. THe new mirror cap may not be painted, so if youre careful, you can pry the old cap off the existing mirror.

Reinstall the mirror, make sure it fits right and snug the nuts down, plug it in, make sure all the directions work (up down left right etc) and put the door panel and sail panel back on.

Are you saying the glass is broken also? That's a $65 part, and you don't get the plastic connectors or arms, so be very careful about popping the glass, and saving them. Carefully follow the instillation instructions about re-installing the mirror glass, and you'll need a hair dryer and the specified lubricant, or you'll be buying another $65 replacement. Ask me how I know this. :o

You could always buy the Muth "signal" mirrors in the classifieds. Two new mirrors for 175US.

You don't need to do this if you're only replace the glass sub-assembly.

If you ordered a glass sub-assembly from the dealer, with defrost, you'll need to do the following:

Remove the old glass sub-assembly, wait until you have the new one so you'll know exactly what you're take off of the existing mirror. Your new glass sub-assembly should consist of 1. glass, 2. plastic glass holder (glass already installed), 3. two jack-screws that are already fitted into a ball-and-socket joint on the plastic glass holder, 4. One or two spring dampeners, these are the spring wire that's attached to the glass holder that rub against a ramp inside the mirror.

The first step is to attach the heater wires, should be two wires with terminals that plug into spade lugs on the back of the mirror glass.
Now, the difficult part will be to get the jack-screws lined up in the electric glass actuator and also getting the spring dampeners into position at the same time. Once those are all lined up, push in the center of the glass until you hear a positive snap. Use a cloth like a towel and distribute pressure across the glass so you don't crack the new one as you're snaping it into the glass actuator. The plastic glass holder is polypropylene, so heating it with a hair dryer will help it snap in much easier.

PS, this is one of the worst serviceable mirrors at Ford. It's made by a german company called Schefenaker. 2/3s of Ford's other mirrors are easy snap-on, snap-off style. Also, this glass sub-assembly only costs Ford about $3 from the supplier, the $65 service price is so they can overnight it around the country a few times.

Hope this helps.
