I think its for a new battery, I've got over 4.5 years out of the original and dont want to push it any further and get myself stranded.
What's everyone else using, and what do you recommend?

Motorcraft, Interstate, Diehard, Optima
All nice products, the first three should price comparably, the Optima will be a bit more.

Interstate MTP-65 (875 CCA) fits our car no problem. Replaced my OEM battery after 4.5 years with this one after doing some research. Been great so far in the WI winter.
Here is a link (http://www.interstatebatteries.com/estore/search.asp?details=1&mscssid=MAXRNUSA3FJT8MKU4A54P2 8BD0BN88WE&N=21+4294574660+4294574410+214 7384818+4294574675&part_number=MTP%2D65&part_desc=Mega%2DTron+Plus+%2D +85+Months+%2D+875+CCA&Nu=Part+Number&Ns=product+Type%7C0%7C%7CRank% 7C1&js=1) with more info.
Do some searches here and you'll find some other recommendations.
Good luck,

i have the optima(red) i got it when #2 was being put in because the oem batt didn't make it during the wait.also since the time it took for # 3 to be put in and running the batt now only holds a charge for 4days .i have this reconditioning button on my batt charger and i just tried it the other day so i'll see if that helps.

When I replace my batteries, I just got the East Penn manufacturing which is about 10 minutes from my house.
I buy a "second" which means they have a cosmetic issue, not a function issue.
I save about 50%.
They make alot of brands, their home brand is Deka Batteries.
Right now though, I have a brand new Optima in the trunk, from Summit.

The MAXX group 65 at Wal Mart is very highly rated at Consumer Reports... three year free exchange...

I ran an Optima for two years but it died over the winter while the car was down for the blown engine. It was under full replacement warranty but I couldn't find the papers at that time and needed something immediately. I found that the Bosch had a little more CCA than any other group 65 batteries on the shelf so I got that.

I would have the system check first, see how "life" is left in the battery. Mine car is an Aug.'02 build and after 4 1/2 years & 35,XXX miles it's fine.
I do understand about being stranded. I am still under warrenty till Oct.'07 :)

My OEM lasted exactly 2 years.
Replaced w/ NAPA because the OEM went dead in front of NAPA.
NAPA lasted exactly 1 year swapped for a new one underwarranty.
Now have Optima.

I would recommend the Motorcraft and upgrade to a higher rated one.

Get the Optima if you want an overpriced reduced capacity battery.

Four to six years is good. I've had motorcraft Batteries that
last 9 to 11years-all depends on how many times they've
been deep cycled, boosted and exteme temperatures..
or dropped will greatly affect Battery life.
Still have orig in Marauder..plan on at least 2-3 years
more before I plan to replace it..

Purchased Marauder OCT.02, Marauder built date is AUG.02, 32,000 mi. original battery is still running excellent, little green light on top is still shinning green. :bows:
Marauder is my daily driver, and when I have to replace the battery, it will be another Motorcraft Original. :2thumbs:
If it ain't broke than don't try to fix it. :nono:

I'd get a Motorcraft battery.
That said, I've been using the Everstart Maxx 65S from Walmart in my 2000 CVPI (with full police equipment). I'm on my third one - the previous two died at the the two-year mark - the last one about a week ago. Since they have a three year free replacement I just returned them to Walmart (without a receipt in both cases) and walked out 10 minutes later with a brand new one off the shelf.
It's hard to complain since I only paid about $65 when I bought the first one four years ago and haven't had to pay a dime since.

I was going to replace the Motorcraft with another, as I have had very good service with them.
The GMQ LSE is seven years old 2002, and still has the factory battery.
I bought the car three years old, but it appears to be origonal.
I ended up with a Duralast from Auto zone.
The Duralast battery was considerably less cost, twice the warranty and roadside assistance for jump starts twice a year up to three years.
I am loyal to a point, but it was so much betteR, I bought it.

I bought an Interstate Megatron battery (don't remember the model number) that Magindat recommend to get and it has been flawless. I've used to to jump I don't know how many other vehicles since it's been in and nice having 875cca to ensure good cold weather start ups.

I put in a Motorcraft 750cca. The first one lasted almost 5 years here in FLA and it was no more expensive than a comparable battery.

For value, Interstate. The one in my Bronco (351W) is about 8 years old and still has lots of cold cranking power (Truck sits outside all year in Colorado). I bought a red top Optima to replace it when I thought it had died, but it turned out to be the starter. The starter was only 3 or 4 years old, but I have equal length Bassani headers and I think the heat kills the starter and/or solenoid. (gonna put a blanket around the new starter when i can get back under the truck. The red top has a high CCA rating.
The MM came with a yellow top Optima (deep cycle), thanks to it's original owner who wasn't diriving it real often. Have had no problems with it. Always starts quick. They are pricy, though.

I own several hp batteries in my vehicles(optima yellowtop, motocraft, stinger, battcap, and kinetik) My advice is unless your car has a ton of stereo equipment that you run with the vehicle off often, buy the Ford diesel truck version of our size battery...best bang for the buck and lots of quality power.

I don't know about the Motorcraft or Optima, but I do know that the Die Hard gold and Wal Mart premium batteries are both the same battery, made by Johnson Controls. They are good batteries, but no need to pay extra to get "die hard" written on it.

Since this Thread has been bumped.... I replaced my 650 Battery w/ a Motorcraft 850 Battery for about $100. It fits in the stock location...and well.... looks stock.

Do the research. Interstate MTP65 Black top has the most CCA for a 65 series battery of ANY model, more reserve than an optima and interstate owns and makes optima. Seems silly not to buy a perfect fit battery that tops 'high performance' for less money.

Ive had real good luck with Champion batteries, I think KMart has them.

The interstate MTP65 is what merc uses as a replacement battery. The motorcraft is still working after 6 years and transplanted in another car.

Motorcraft myself. No problems
I was once told there are only 2 battery MFG's in existence.
Everyone just slaps their names on them and markets them as their own.

I used my old Motorcraft battery to jump some of the cars that die in my shop. I don't remember the last time it was in my car charging but it still jumps cars lol.

I am still running the OE battery and I have never recharged it or put it on a tender. And the car gets driven infrequently between starts too. At this rate I think it may last forever. 5+ years and still going strong. How can you go wrong with that?
