View Full Version : Are Gorilla Guard wheellocks any good?

I have read the threads on wheel locks and see the Gorilla system of 20 locks is recommended. But, Gorilla has a Gorilla Guard product with a free-spinning steel sleeve. Would this be better than the original Gorilla's if a set of 20 could be obtained? They only seem 2 be available in sets of 4. Is it worth the trouble and cost to ask Gorilla for a special order of 20 matching pieces?

I have the set of 4 Gorillas. Much better, IMO, than the McGard's.

The spinning ones look cool. It would definately take a determined thief to remove 4 of the Gorilla's....let alone 20!

sorry folks, i'm being anal ...gorilla has three levels of locks: gorilla (original),gorilla guard (spinning sleeve), and gorilla guard II (value). The "system" as they call it consists of 20 of their orginal-design gorillas, keyed-alike. I'm asking if the new design of the spinning sleeve is better, and thus worth buying either 5 sets of 4 ($$$) or asking Gorilla to special order a keyed-alike set of 20.

I went with the "system" and are happy with them.

I'm thinking about buying the 'system' of 20 original style...
PLUS one set of 4 of the new spinning collar style; using one for each wheel.
I figure the longer it takes a criminal to get the different style locking lugs off, the better the chance my OEM rims stay ON MY MARAUDER.

I have the set of 20 on both my Marauder and Daytona. I figure if a guy is hoss enough to get 20 of them off, he can have the wheels. Check both JCWhitey and Summit Racing. I got one set from each.

I don't know if the sleeve makes a whole lot of difference when you're dealing with 20, from a thief's point of view. Either way, he's gonna pass and move on to an easier target.

The spinning style is 1.5" versus 1.4" for the original style gorilla. do you think you will have any wheel vibration from adding the one spinner? or is the difference in mass too small to be noticeable...

(I warned you I was over-analyzing this):P

Go with the original Gorillas, and save your money.

Not being familiar witrh the spinning type, I am still very happy with the original Gorilla, and feel my rims are as safe as a baby in it's Momma's arms.

They are one hell of a theft deterrent, and cannot go wrong, IMO.

The orginal gorillas look right and are helly hard to remove inside the lug holes. You ARE overanalyzing and overkilling. The orginals will serve you well and look good doing it.

You are underestimating the resourcefulness of our local Baltimore/Wash D.C. criminals.

If it can be stolen....It will be.

More likely the wheels will be damaged by a would be thief. I figure wheel locks will only do so much. If someone really, really wants to steal my wheels, they are either going to succeed, or they are going to really damage the area around the lug lock, and fail to steal them. Then I will have to replace the wheels anyway.

True. One can only do so much. At some point, you have to sigh and say to yourself, "That's what insurance is for."

What size fits our 18" rims? Looks like they have 3or4 different sizes.

Like madignat said anything can be stolen. What you want to do is make it unattractive for a thief so he'll go else where. maybe those wheels on that ricer over there... or those 24's on that SUV.....

I have the Gorilla wheel lock & lug install kit on my Merc. They seem pretty good - I recommend giving them a coat of synthetic polish before and after installing to prevent scratching the chrome/light rusting.

They are very affordable, so I just change mine out yearly as no matter what I do they seem to get some very small rust spot(s) on them. Gotta keep them HPPs looking sharp!

Is 71683N, 1/2 x 20 still good numbers on these (I'm at work and my car's at home, have no idea how to benchmark what's on the car versus what the Gorilla application is).

Oh yea, I'm talking Gorilla numbers...unless these are Summit numbers..

Ugh, why am I trying to figure this out at work....

Help!

Thx...been thinking of this for a while, but had no idea how to figure out which one's were for me...

I'm running both Gorilla orig. locks and McGards.

I'm one of the first here with the Gorilla set of 20 lug nuts.
I opted for the Polished Tuner Lugs nuts.

I took the McGuard locks that came with my Marauder
and gave them back to my salesman.
I had a bad experience with lug locks that use a key
that fits into the head of the lug.
I feel safer with a key that is a socket for the lug nut.

Make sure you put a small dab of lithium grease
inside each lug before installing it.
AND then make sure you check your lug nut torque
after driving your beast about 100 miles.
Then recheck them every 3 months.

You'd be surprised how many times you will find
one on each wheel that needs maybe 1/4 turn ?

AND make sure you get AN EXTRA SOCKET for your lugs !!!
What ever the cost of the extra socket, it is worth its weight in GOLD.

I ordered extra sockets for both my Charger and Marauder. About $8 and worth every penny.

I put one socket inside the spare wheel, and hold it in place with a magnet. It won't rattle and it's there if I need it. If I'm a road trip, I put the spare socket in my luggage. Otherwise, it stays in my tool box.
