This is a good right-up on the Sylvania Headlight bulbs by one of the Impala SS "gurus" Scott Mueller. While not applying directly to your application, I'm sure the classifications still hold true.

>The local Wal-Mart has 3 levels of Sylvania replacement headlight bulbs:
a
'regular' 9004 bulbs that are rated "20% brighter" than they used to be,
Cool
Blues that cost a little more, and then Silver Star bulbs that cost $37
for
two of them, which is about 4 times as much as the regular bulbs.

Here is some information I have compiled from Sylvania engineering about
the
different Sylvania bulbs:

XtraVision: An uncoated high output bulb with increased lumens and
luminance.
A Krypton/Xenon gas fill combined with a modified filament (coil length is
decreased slightly) provides an increase in intensity. A standard 9004
bulb
is rated 700/1200 lumens (+/-15%), while the 9004XV lamp runs at the high
end
of the allowable specification for a 9004, which is 805/1380 lm. They are
rated 3200K color temperature (same as standard halogens) however their
life
is decreased slightly due to the tighter pitch coil filament.

Cool Blue: A coated bulb with increased color temperature, Krypton/Xenon
fill, and a modified filament design. An absorption coating is applied to
filter out the red and yellow wavelengths to give a higher color
temperature
beam of around 3500 to 3700K. Since any coating reduces light output the
filament design was changed to compensate by increasing output similar to
the
XtraVision. The 9004CB runs 700/1200 lm and 3500K color temperature, while
the 9003CB (H4) version runs 900/1500 lm and 3700K color temperature. Life
is
shorter than standard or Xtravision lamps.

SilverStar: A coated bulb with a modified filament which pushes the
envelope
for performance. The specially designed coating offers an increased color
temperature of about 4000K, which is very close to HID (4100K). The
filament
design is again changed for even more output and the gas fill is 100%
Xenon.
9004 versions are rated 700/1200 lumens and 50/70 watts, while 9003ST
versions are rated 910/1500 lumens and 65/72 watts. A silver coated
blacktop
is also used for appearance reasons. Sylvania studied the popular illegal
bulbs on the market and made the SilverStar match in performance and
brightness. Since they had to stay within legal specs, the lifetime of
this
lamp is short. It is a high-performance lamp with shorter replacement
intervals. Compared to the competition which costs twice as much, it is an
excellent bulb.

>Don't want that "rice-burner" look so I don't think I need the Cool Blue
bulbs. Am thinking that the Silver Star bulbs may be the best.
Has anybody tried the Silver Stars? Are they worth 4 times as much?

That depends on what you want. The main visible difference between
XtraVision (XV), Cool Blue (CB), and SilverStar (ST) is the color
temperature, with the ST having the most blue (and the least yellow),
making
it appear "whiter" than the others. Using your terminology, the ST has
more
of a "rice burner" look than the CB, while XV looks like a normal bulb,
only
much brighter.

Here is a brightness comparison of the 9003 (H4) versions (which would be
used in the E-code or export headlights), listed in order of brightness in
lumens:

Low High
Bulb Type (lm) (lm) Color
--------------------------------------
9003CB (Cool Blue) 900 1500 3700K
Standard H4 (9003) 910 1500 3200K
9003ST (SilverStar) 910 1500 4000K
9003XV (XtraVision) 1000 1650 3200K

In terms of specific color chromaticity these bulbs fall on the blackbody
curve with the following values:

XtraVision: x= 0.435 y= 0.438
Cool Blue: x= 0.405 y= 0.397
SilverStar: x= 0.401 y= 0.386
An HID lamp: x= 0.380 y= 0.370

As the numbers go lower, the color becomes whiter (more blue, less
yellow).
As you can see from these figures, there is a big jump in color between
the
XtraVision and Cool Blue, but not nearly as big a jump to the SilverStar,
and
finally a larger jump to the HID.

A representation of the CIE (International Commission on Lighting) 1931
Chromaticity diagram can be seen at
<http://www.efg2.com/Lab/Graphics/Colors/CIE1931.jpg>. This is only an
approximation since no CRT, LCD or printer or any other output device
using a
fixed number of phosphors or pigments can generate all observable colors.

As you can see from the above figures, the ST is only slightly different
in color from the CB, but the cost is much higher and the life is much
less.

Bottom Line: If you want the "whitest" (most blue and least yellow) bulb
with the highest output (at stock wattage), and are willing to pay double
the price and have about half the life, then the ST is great. If you want
a
white bulb with reasonable brightness and life, then get CB. If you are
more
into function than fashion, and want the brightest light that will work
best
in all weather conditions, and feature reasonable bulb life, then I
recommend
the Sylvania XV (XtraVision) bulb, which has 20% to 30% more output than
the
standard versions. They can usually be purchased at Pep Boys, AutoZone and
WalMart for under $15. Scott.

Wayne:

Excellent info, thanks.

Although I take exception to the statement that the SilverStars are "more of a 'rice burner' look than the {Cool Blue}"...to me, the ricer look has an obvious blue tint, while the STs are much "whiter"...and Sylvania has a $10-off (per pair) coupon on their web site (good through the end of June), so the cost is not as much of a factor...

I installed the Silverstars, part # 9007ST, which is the replacement part for our stock Marauder lamps. In my opinion the difference is tangible. They are brighter and "crisper". RF is correct about the rebate, ten bucks by the end of June. Mine were $24 each at Murrays Auto Parts, so after rebate, cost me 40 bucks....well worth it if you drive a lot at nighttime....

SilverStars are worth the money. IMHO
Nice bright, white output. Makes a big difference with the smoked headlamp covers the MM has.

No rice look to them at all. :flamer:
