View Full Version : Rear bumper cover making a clanging noise?

Since the weather has warmed up, I've noticed a clanging sound coming from the rear of the car when I hit a bump, or go around a right-hand corner. My first thought was exhaust, but there's plenty of clearance. Now we have it up on the lift, and if you smack the rear bumper cover, it makes that clanging noise. Very weird. Anybody else have this problem, and have a solution?

That might help, but this noise seems like it's more at the top of the bumper cover.

Its the sweet sound of your incredibly shiny tips resonating to the melodious burble of your finely tuned, well designed piece of outstanding American steel...even though she was built in Canada...:D

Well, I think I may have isolated it on the drive home. The car did fine, no rattles, until almost home, when I turn off onto an uphill street that is a little bumpy. Then the clanging started big-time. Once it starts, it won't quit. It even clanged while I was sitting still getting my mail.

So it starts on an uphill, bumpy road. It almost has to be exhaust. Any ideas?

Exhaust system bumping one of the Watts arms?

These exhaust systems (SS) tend to "Grow" as much as an inch in length when hot......If you modded the system and did not allow for this your tail pipe may be hitting the gas tank!!??

I had this problem but not during normal driving....A WOT blast and "Clang...Clang...Clang" until it cooled!!:argue:

Surgically removed about 1/2 inch behind the muffler and all is well once again!!

Good Luck!!

I think you're onto it there, Marauderjack. Last night when I drove it home, it did fine until the engine got up to operating temperature. Then as soon as I hit a couple of bumps, the clanging started. It's definitely exhaust.

All I did to the exhaust system was have the OEM mufflers replaced with Borlas. Now I have to figure out what they did...

Jon.....

Get it up to temperature then romp on it good then stop and, with a rag (HOT), wiggle the exhaust tips back and forth...up and down.....you will have the answer if it is exhaust!!

Good Luck!!

That happenned to me with my 1st magnaflows. The first portion of the tail was just a tad longer. The front vertical portion of the upside-down U that goes over tha axle was touching something OCCASIONALLY. I could put my foot on the tip and push forward a tiny bit and it would quit.

I got the same explanation about growth due to heat and it was accounted for when I got my 14" magnaflows, delete tips and custom H assembly.

I vote for tailpipes against the gas tank. I've seen it before.

Since you just had the mufflers replaced, I agree with Wes

The Borlas are likely slightly different in length - the shop probably did not account for thermal expansion of the exhaust system.
