picked up my 03 yesterday in Houston, and drove it 720 miles home on mostly back roads. (scenic hwy 7 in AR Hot Springs to Harrison was paved for a Marauder) but after driving and coming to a stop, I hear what I percieve to be lifter noise. it drove allright, and it likes FlyingJ 92 octane fuel much better than whatever the dealer filled it with. I got 23.7 mpg in the 720 miles with only a couple of 100 mph stints...;)

it has the wrong size rear tires, but I will remedy that tomorrow, and the frame damage? I found nothing but mis-aligned hood bumpers, crinkled paint on the rear bumper, one busted "louver" on the rear of the console and rock chips. (and the fog light I already knew about)

the biggest thing to me is the lifter noise. now what? do I worry? whatsup? (off to do a search)

oh yeah, it was awesome!

how many miles does it have? Some Marvel Mystery oil with your next oil change may silence it.

Good luck with the new car. I'd do an oil change before anything else. I always do an oil change immediately on a new-to-me car. The semi-synthetic at the Ford dealer does a good job, and it lets the folks at the dealer see your car and you. Good if you need work or parts later.

Wish you could've come through 4 days sooner. You had to have come through Lufkin, and you could've met us at the track and tried out the new car.

I drove through lufkin... yesterday:eek:

I changed the oil in Livingston TX Mobil 1 5-20 with motorcraft filter. also swapped in a K&N.

due to the tapping noise when hot, I might drain the 5-20 and try 5-30 instead. we'll see.

88k miles, runs pretty strong, even the wife approves...

after spending 1.5 days sitting in it, I cant wait for the morning commute...

Since our motors have overhead cams, there are no "lifters", instead they are called followers. You might want to remove the cam covers and retorque the cam hold down bolts.

Isn't this the infamous bad head issue?

I thought the bad head issue was the drivers head, my noise seems to be on the other side.

23.7 mpg, dang thats good. I judge my fuel mileage by volume. I burn about a quarter tank per hour on the highway. LOL

Doesn't the beast just looooove the open road?

it really loves the open road for sure...

I enjoy my morning commute much more now.

follower noise still irritating, still does it when hot,(not when cold) now she has 104k, and is out of warranty. still loves the open road (130ish this morning Ahemm...)

but the dealer is clueless about this one. only happens when warmed up, sounds like a collapsed lifter/follower

Man, the valvetrains on these things. Arghhhhhhh. :mad2: Mine's noisy at times, too. Clatters like crazy on startup. Noisy driver's side head. Sometimes good. Sometimes bad. Just crazy.

mine has the blue smoke syndrome on the left side only, on cold start ups only, but no noise yet. I wish I had a commute.

what do you mean wrong sized rear tires?

Could you of damage the transmission in your 700+ mile journey?
