As a new MM owner I am beginning to notice that the shifter is rather “squirrelly” when shifting into reverse and between the drive gears. Is there a fix for this? Also I was noticing this morning (first thing) and this afternoon (after running lunch errands) that I need to press the gas before moving in either reverse or drive. Like there is a lack of compression or something. My observation is that an automatic transmission should provide some “go” after letting the foot off the brake.

I will be taking my new ride in for its 30k mi transmission service a little early (25, 256 mi currently) so I will bring this up then as well. Any pointers I should be prepared to mention to my transmission guy…other than what I state above?

Thanks

Could this possibly be an extended warrenty issue with L/M? I am 3rd owner. Or maybe something covered by the 6mo / 6k Mi warrenty from the dealer I bought from?

Its possible the car has a high stall converter which would explain it not moving when you let off the brake.
As for engagement, try adjusting the shifter linkage.
It is also adjustable in aftermarket software.

The 'moving' during idle is called 'creep'.
If you car has no creep, Zack is right that it may be a high-stall torque converter a previous owner installed. If that's the case it wouldn't be a bad thing! You just need to be aware of the reduced creep when on inclines and such.
Shifter linkage adjustment may be covered under extended warranty, but most certainly an aftermarket converter is NOT! However, if it IS an anftermarket converter causing the 'problem', it's not really a problem but a characteristic - and a great performance mod!

Thank you both. This was the insight I was hoping for.

There are 2 bolts that hold the linkage plate on to the transmission, Mine loosened up and the shifter was a little sloppy. Then I went to the mall and went to put the car into Park, It started moving in reverse. The plate was held on by one bolt and the cable was just dangling down. I was lucky that my sister lived near by and my brother in law had a jack with some tools.
The stupidest things cause the biggest problems.

300A builds had an issue with the shifter adjustment, I took it back under 3/36 and they replaced the shifter. There was slop trying to get it into R the selector said it was in R but it didn't engage all the time from D to R. From P to R it worked fine.
If you have similar symptons, it just may be adjustment.
BTW, the dealership said it was cheaper to replace the shifter than adjust it,,go figure :shake:

There is no adjustment on the shifter - all adjustment is done on the trans. The shifter cable slots in the plastic on the front, and the other end clips onto the ball/stud on shifter handle - that's that on the shifter end.

That said, there is no reason to replace the shifter unless yours is broken.
