View Full Version : Ford Recalls CVPI for Wheel Cracks

This piece was in today's paper from the "AP" :

"Ford Motor Co. will begin recalling as many as 109,664 CVPI cars next week because cracks could develop in their steel wheels and cause rapid air loss in tires during high-speed pursuits. The recall affects certain 2003 - 2005 models. Cracks have been reported in a small percentage of wheels. Police departments (not named) have attributed two crashes to the wheel problem, but Ford has disputed those claims."

Are these not the wheels some are using for their winter package?

I was looking into buying that rim type. I know lots of folks here do use that package. Excellent post for awareness.

I thought this news was years old...I remember reading about it a long long time ago.

That is very very old news. Applies to certain 2003 CVPIs! The only way later CVPIs could be effected is if an agency swapped wheels between cars
There is an inspection process for specific date stamped wheels.

The AP is either asleep, or it's just time to make Ford look bad again

According to my dealer, who sells and services many CVPIs, they never found any that were cracked, but all of certain production wheels had to be replaced anyway.

I remember when the PD's received notice to "inspect" the then-new 03's for wheel cracks. I only posted what I saw printed in the "Phila Inquirer" in Thursday's edition 03/08/07, Section-C, page-3, column-1.

Possibly this has finally escalated to a formal "recall" by Ford as a result of the alleged crashes...i.e. Firestone Tires?

With a recall date of March 1, 2007 it is not that very very old news from a long long time ago.
Just goes to show you how long gov't agencies can grind their gears.

The recall from a while back was for the wheel covers. The brakes would heat the rims and lug nuts up to a point where the covers (held onto the wheels only by the lug nuts) would melt around the lug nut holes and come off.

The recall was a very long time ago. What brings it up again I don't know, but trust me, five of my wheels were replaced by formal recall a long time ago.

It most likely is a move to prevent law suit. I doubt it's a 'real' problem. It's also possible that not enough agencies responded to the old recall, wheels were switched amongst cars by their own mechanics, and no one knows what wheel is on which car, compounding the 'problem'

No, the recall was for wheels, not wheel covers.

The lugnuts would have to be practically glowing for the cover locks to melt

Which style wheels and can you check the date code with the tire on the rim? I have a pair I use for drag racing.

Yes you can see the date code on the rim with the tire mounted.

The Department changed out all 5 of my wheels today over this recall. My 06 was ok but I had to drive another car over the 3rd shifter being late. The city garage has a overtime crew working today and tomorrow to get as many as they can changed out. The date code is on the front of the rim near the lugnuts from what I saw the mechanics checking. I know we have somewhere around 550 cars.

If you are using these rims, you might want to check the date codes to see if yours has been recalled. Loosing air pressure quickly at high speeds..:bigcry: I would hate to see one of the MM get trashed.
