View Full Version : Holes drilled in mufflers

On a recent cold day I noticed exhaust fumes coming from under my (2nd owner) DTR. I took it to dealer. They said NOT covered under my extended warrenty because THERE ARE FOUR 5/8" HOLES CAREFULLY DRILLED IN EACH MUFFLER!
Which I did not do. This does explain why I always thought that the car sounded louder than stock. When I bought the car directly from previous (first) owner he fessed up to a performance tune, plugs, and thermostat, but was vague on having done any mods to the exhaust system. Is drilling holes a mod?!?
What's funny is that the car passed state inspection for me, two years running.
Any comments on my predicament?
Unfortunately, there's not much you can do at this point except to replace the mufflers on your dime. Consider Borlas. I bought some for my car and they sound awesome. Very deep and mellow.

Thats odd. I checked my ole OEM mufflers. They have two small holes each to let water out.

Many factory Ford mufflers have holes in the bottom to let water condensation drip out. This does not let the exhaust gas come out though. If the internal part of the muffler deteriorates, THEN you'll get exhaust out the holes.

5/8 ths is a BIG hole for water weep !!!!!!
Sounds like the previous owner wanted to make some noise the cheap way....

Wow, I didn't catch that. 5/8" is a tad larger than the factory Ford weep holes ;). Sure you didn't mean 1/8"??

MUfflers don't necessarily have much to do with getting a sticker. My old CV I was running no mufflers and Dynomax converters for almost 2 years and I always passed on a sticker.

Confirming that they told me it was 5/8" holes. But might have been four total rather than 4/muffler. Perhaps previous owner wanted larger weepers and drilled too far. Or just wanted more noise!

Probably wanted more noise. However having exhaust coming out under the car is very dangerous. If this guy thought drilling holes in the muffler was a mod I would be very worried about anything else he did to the car.

There might be a cheap fix...
Piece of galvinized sheet metal, Muffler sealer/compound, sheet metal screws...
Cover holes....;)

Holy *****in hill billy modification!
Just go to your local exhaust shop and have them weld a small (1") peice of sheet metal over the holes.

Are our Mufflers made out of steel or aluminum because I didn't know that you can weld on aluminum?
If they are made out of aluminum and they can be welded make sure that they don't BS you and tell you that it cannot be done.
Many years ago I somehow developed a small hole on the muffler of my Ford Explorer. When I took it to an exhaust shop they told me that Aluminum cannot be welded and that I would need a whole new muffler. Well, I was going to sell the car shortly anyway so I just it be. Now that I read this I hope that I wasn't lied to.

No mufflers are made out of aluminium. Also, you can most definitely weld aluminum.

I think first priority should be to make then safe again from a CO standpoint.
The mufflers are already boogered up so you mights as well save what you can for now.
Crawl underneath, clean with a 3M ScotchBright until shinny.
Put just enought tape over the hole to create a backer. About .75" dia.
Then use some JB Weld and putty over the top of the tape and a good 1/2 inch around the tape.
The JB will outlast the mufflers and only costs $4.00. Then save up for some Borlas!!
I'll never understand why people do these things to devalue perfectly good cars. :shake:

I concur. Have the mufflers repaired or replaced ASAP.
