Curiosity was gettin' the best of me so I e-mailed Kelley Blue Book and asked about the '03 Marauder. I stated that the car's been out a year and is a higher model than the Grand marquis.

They actually wrote me back and this is they're statement:

Hello Jefferson,

Thank you for your email. The 2003 Mercury Marauder is scheduled to be in
the July-August book and Software for Karpower so you should see that values
shortly. The website will be updated on or around July 1st and that is when
you will find the trade-in and private party values.

Thank you for visiting our site.

When I sold my first MM, I got 23K from CarMax. (22,841 after fees) They listed it for 25,998. Not a bad turn over for just washing a car, eh? Anyway, this was the first MM through CarMax doors nationwide, and I think they hit it square, both in and out.

It will be interesting to see how the honorable, but dated "books" will react to this 411. "Books" do not set the used car money index anymore. CarMax, the used car champion of the new age, is quickly filling their shoes as datakeeper of used automobile values. I'm not expecting any surprises.

Sarge - Did CarMax sell you MM for $25,998 or is it still in their inventory?

Well...By their website...

http://www.carmax.com/dyn/factsheet/factsheet.asp?pageType=1&id=1721045

And...

"Current as of 6/17/2003 9:58 PM"

I'd say it's still available.

I made the motions of trading my MM 300A for a (new) 2003 SVT Cobra... the difference had I chose to trade was: $11K.

Now just WHERE does that place my MM in value??

Cobra stated price was (??) $31K.

Jeeze...I don't know. Too many numbers to calculate here.

Maybe they knew you were just funnin with them...

Actually Sarge, I believe its a case of the FORD dealer NOT wanting to trade for a car that they know nothing about!!
The Cobra is HOT merchandise right now and they would rather sell them outright.

Several salesmen came out to ogle the MM...without comment.

I thought they were HOT too, but my local SVT dealer still has 14 new Cobras in stock

We have to pay personal property tax on our vehicles here. The tax commissioner assessed my Marauder at $22,620 (with $361.70 tax due). I don't know where they came up with that figure; it was probably based on the Grand Marquis value.

Barbara what Nazi state do you live in? 'Personal Property Tax'????

Also I think that 22,620 is Kelley Blue Book's Grand Marquis LSE value................

They have SEVERAL ways of getting you...

I just had to pay over $1,100 to put tags on the Marauder and my '02 Suburban...for JUST the next year in GA

Sounds like some of you need to come to The Republic of Texas, and bring your MM's. We HATE taxes here. No personal property tax on cars, no state income tax, and there would be a war if we had to pay $1100.00 to put tags on 2 cars for a year. My wife and I spend less than $150.00 per year for both of our cars combined for plates.

I envy you. This is yet another reason to like Texas. ;)

I hear you Ross. In Alberta, there is only property tax on land, no sales tax and no provincial income tax. It only cost me $65 to register each car for 1 year.
Of course, if you fail to stop for a pedestrian, it's a $600 fine. But that's OK too.

I renewed my tags in March. Under $250 for 5 cars, 2 RVs, and 3 motorcycles.

I feel that property taxes in Texas more than make up for lack of other taxes, at least in Houston...

And that $351.70 I paid is net of the otherwise total $922.90 gross tax due to the "personal use vehicle tax relief" program! They property tax you on boats and RV's as well. In addition, there's the $23 Chesapeake city tax sticker, the $15 inspection sticker, and the $28 vehicle registration fee. Of course, they all come due at different times of the year as well. Don't even get me started on the city sales taxes.

I guess the problem is Virginia's not a "state", it's a "commonwealth", which apparently means one's wealth is considered common property.

I love the $23 sticker to prove you paid your $300+ property tax.

In all fairness to Communist Virginia, our sales tax is only 4.5%, one of the lowest. Also, outside Fairfax and arlington countys, is down right provincial in atitude. Some of the county school systems even have in door plumbing.!!

That is no lie! My Dad boought a very nice house 25 years ago for 100,000 the current eval is in the 350,000 range. If he devides his prop tax into twelve payments it is more than the mortgage payment was.

Of course some states have prop tax and state level income tax!

On Automobiles.

I forgot what I paid, though close to $500 I think. Interestingly, the nice lady at H&R Block (them's who do my taxes) asked me if I owned my car, I said, "well me and the bank". Long story short, apparently one can right off property taxes on your income taxes when itemizing.

Excellent! I have an acreage just south of Ardrossan. I had no idea you once lived around here! Miss it? I've never been to TX, but couldn't think of living anywhere else but here.
Bet living there suck come playoffs

Got a buddy who lives in Sherwood Park... :)

Miss it? hmm between the income taxes, horrible economy, lack of jobs, and cold ass winters, no...Not really... :) I think it snowed for about 20 minutes this past winter...

North Texas culture and lifestyle is almost identical to Alberta living, just replace the Indian/Pakistani immigrants with mexicans and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference...

Hmmm, not exactly politically correct, but well... It's true!

Maybe they had a buyer in Houston, moved the car, then the buyer backed out! If I had time this week (going on vacation) I would take a peek at the VIN. Anyone remember what they asked for Sarges car?

I checked the private party value, choosing multi-cd player, and "premium" wheels, excellent condition. Got a figure of $26,260 with 4,000 miles. That's the price I paid new.
I can't complain at all!

The Houston CarMax MM is not my MM. My first MM has been purchased long distance and it's being shipped from Chicago to Austin Texas. The buyer is registered here and I look forward to saying welcome to him soon.

I don't know how the blue book treats these thing today, but when I was younger, a high performance version of any automobile often suffered in resale values. When I bought my '69 Camaro SS for racing, and a '69 Chevy Brookwood station wagon as a tow car, there came a time that the tow car was worth more than the race car, despite a large difference in prices at the time of purchase. SlvrBullet's comments make me wonder if this could be the case with the MM?

Trade in value on mine with 5000 miles is 22,400...Private sale is 25,235

Considering the low interest and rebates I got on delivery I took the general 1/4 hit from lot drive off.

I loaded out a GM LSE that stickered for 31+ that has a KBB.COM trade of 20+ so I beleive we are pretty close to the normal curve for trade in of large American made sedans.
