As for part numbers I think it would depend on the year, or do you mean the name 'FMX'?

There is a pretty good article on Wikipedia

I've seen the wilkpedia article, I'm just wondering if there is a more common part identifier for the merc-o-matic, like the C-4, etc. Specifically the Merc-O-Matic out of a '63 marauder, but I'm sure the tranny is the same as the Ford-O-Matic.

I don't know of a common name, in most of the shop-manuals and literature I've run across, they are just called Merc-O-Matics and Multi-Drive merc-O-Matics.

I've got a 1961 service specifications manuals here, that lists the model transmissions as follows

PAZ-Z (MOM) 292CID2V
PBM-Z (MOM) 352CID2V
PCC-A (MD) 292CID2V
PCD-A (MD) 352CID 2V
PCE-B (MD) 390CID 2V
MOM= MERC-O-MATIC
MD = MULTI-DRIVE

I'll try to dig up 63/64 models specs, and maybe see if they are all "P" series

merc-o-matic was used for years as a generic name for automatic transmissions.

typically up to 66 they were BW units (later FMX) but also C-6s were referred as well. starting sometime in 67, the valvebodies were revalved to allow for normal 3-speed operation, and the ford/merc/linc-o-matic names were fased out.

the "green dot" transmissions had a 3-speed profile and a 2-sp profile as well.

so basically it depended on engine and year as to what trans it is.

pre-66 big blocks would be the borg warner trans (FMX)

Thanks. I'm just trying to further my knowledge on the older marauders.

Also, the FMX's have a cast iron case with aluminum output shaft housing and bellhousing, the C6 and C4 are all aluminum.

in many situations the FMX/borg warner trans can be swapped with a C-6 with no mods. the length, yoke size, shifter arm location, mount location and overall size are the same on many apps, the cooling lines are different. the C-6 is lighter,stronger and has less parisitic loss. the Borg warner/FMX is a good trans though.

It's a pre-C4 automatic, basically the same as the ford-0-matic.

They are all 3 speed but the earlier ones started in 2nd when in Drive. To get 1st you had to start in L then shift to D.
