View Full Version : REAL Oil Pressure

I finally got my gauge in and hooked up to the oil system.

Yes, I am running a mechanical oil pressure gauge. I know many think I am nuts, and you're right.... (This gauge has an oil line coming from the engine block, where the old sender was, and connects directly to the gauge in the gauge pod.)

Here are my results for real oil pressure in my Marauder: 70* F Ambient

Cold start - Climbs Straight to 80 PSI in about 4 seconds.

Normal Operating Temp - Neutral - 16 PSI

Normal Operating Temp - 2,000 RPM - 50 PSI

Normal Operating Temp - 2,200 RPM - 55 PSI

Normal Operating Temp - 2,300 RPM - 57 PSI

Normal Operating Temp - Idle in Drive - 15 PSI

I idle at 650 in Neutral and 600 in Drive.....

On the highway, floored while passing, 100 + PSI (about 120 PSI)

Not sure how this compares with all the updated gauges with the "real" sender, but this is what I have.

CONGRATS!!!! on the install!

You are the FIRST!!!???

It takes a brass sack to think, and do, outside the box!

Got pics???

Sounds pretty close to my readings.

Those are close to mine. 100 psi cold at idle. That drops off pretty quick. Hot idle in drive is 20psi. / about 650rpm.
I installed the mecanical gauge in December. Have run them in the past w/no leaks or problems.

I am going to have a fancy pressure line made. when that is done, I will take pics and post up.

I would be interested in that - the white plastic line zip tied to the harness under the hood looks a little low rent. Braided would be nice but $$$$$.

I am looking into Teflon brake line. It is very expensive, but tough and attractive. $5 per foot. Local Rad. shop can make what I need.

The run is 7 feet.

My REAL/FAKE/FACE Changed and God knows how accurate Autometer one says:

Cold Start: 75+ PSI
Cold Idle In Drive: 50+ PSI
Hot Idle In Drive: 25 PSI
Hot Cruise (2300 RPMs): 50 PSI
Hot WOT: 55-60 PSI

Using 5W30 Mobil I.....

Not sure how accurate the Autometer gauge is but I think anything around 10 PSI per 1000 RPMs is OK??

I would like to see pictures - I have a local shop that makes up high pressure hoses for the equipment at work.

jack, I get the same readings as you, but my cold start pressure is a bit higher...up to 100 lbs when it's really cold. Like you, I've been using M1 5W-30, but on the next change I'm switching to Pennzoil Platinum.

I recently changed from the Ultra-Lite gauges to the newer Ultra-Lite II...they look the same in daylight, but are backlit like the speedometer at night and are much easier to read than the perimeter lighting on the old ones. Both gauges give almost identical readings.

RF......

My remote oil filter arrangement caused my cold OP to max at only 75+ PSI?? Before it was 90+??

I don't care as long as I can get the @#&%* oil filter off easier!!!:D

He's not the first...

What type of line did you use, and more importantly, where did you route it throught the firewall???

copper line is easily available for that. much more durable than nylon line.

ultralite IIs are back lit huh? Hummmm

I'm Running 'Phantom II'

I think all II series are backlit....

I fear copper line, as it kinks to easily.

My remote oil filter arrangement caused my cold OP to max at only 75+ PSI Before it was 90 That makes more sense. Your remote filter adapter probably has a pressure relief built-in.

ultralite IIs are back lit huh? Yes, and they are VERY much easier for my tired old eyes to read at night. Plus they use LEDs instead of incandescents so you don't have to worry about them ever burning out.

RF,

I now use the FL-1A filter which may have a lower pressure bypass than the FL-820S??

Beats me but it works very well since my blower tubing almost prevented me from even touching the OEM filter on the block much less remove it!!!:mad2:

has anyone just swapped out the idiot light sender unit for a autometer sender unit? I was thinking of that today.

also about pennzoil platinum, I would not run it!
we had hundreds of extra quarts here at the store, and gave a bunch to a local LEO agency, the next oil samples worried the fleet guy so much that he returned the remaining quarts. greatly increased wear over the castrol syntec they normally use. just thought you might like to know. I dont know what lab they use, I liked blackstone when I was doing oil samples on a regular basis.

also if you pour out a quart that has sat for a length of time, you can see a trail of sediment at the end of the quart, I noticed that with some we poured in the waste oil tank. not very encouraging.

I like copper or brass line as well.
Far more durable

I was able to finish this project today. I found a great product, at a pretty high price. I ran a braided Stainless steel coated teflon line. Nice stuff. I was able to run the line trhough the firewall and THEN atach the fitting on the ends. A really nice setup, capable of 2000 PSI.

I ran it throught a nice silicone seal in the firewall. It is just to the right of the accelerator pedal. Some sort of vacume line runs through it, but seems to go nowhere. I cut an X and poked it through.

I will post up pics, once I delete my Jaguar pics and free up the needed space.

I am liking the install I did on these. I also was able to dim out the LED lights in the gauges (too bright) with resistors. Worked out very well. The dim consistant with the rest of the dash lights.

If anyone has questions, feel free to ask.

Dragcity, what value and wattage resistors did you use?

Dragcity

I really don't know. My Brother sent me a handful of pairs and told me to try them. The color banding identifies them I think. I'm pretty sure it was gray, red, brown, silver.

Guess I should have cheked resistance before I installed them. If I get a chance, I'll pull thngs apart and check it out....

Just so everybody knows. the rule of thumb on oil pressure considered safe is 7# per 1000 RPM. Therefore, even with 15# at idle, there is no cause for concern, unless of course, you have 15# at cold idle.
