View Full Version : Rear end squeak?

Yesterday on my way home I started to notice a really bad squeaking sound every time I hit a bump. I was driving along low concrete barrier wall and it was driving me crazy. It sounded like it was coming from the front end and the rear end all at the same time and of course every horrible possible thought was running through my head of what it could be. After I got home and the car sat for maybe 10 mins I had to run back out and I noticed it wasn't doing it as much but it was still there but the sound seemed just to be coming from the rear now. I did a search and think it might be the metal tag off the diff. that is touching the exhaust so I grabbed my video camera and recorded some of what I hear to see if it's the same thing that people were hearing before. I'll check underneth the car once I close up shop this evening to see if that's what it is. In the video I push up and down on the rear driver's side and on the trunk, also if I just bump the car and make it rock side-to-side it will make the squeaking noise also.
Take a look and let me know what you think.
Thanks!

Its easy to speculate, but easier to crawl under the car with a flashlight while a buddy reproduces the noise.

Well I turned off the air suspension and jacked up the left rear side and slid underneth I couldn't find anything around the diff that would be touching anything else. Now here is the kicker, when I lowered the car back down I heard it a little as the tire settled BUT now its not even making one squeak when I rock it hard side-to-side and push down hard on either side and trunk area. I'm baffled right now by this. Could it be the shocks? I do have 67K miles on the clock and I noticed a wet stain on the bottom of the shocks, not that much on the drivers side but the passenger side had maybe 1/4 of greasy dirt around the bottom of it.

Well if it is the shocks what are all my options from oem to top performance replacements?
Edit: I see KYB and Monroe make some for our cars. Any gone with KYB on theirs? I've had KYB stuff in the past on other vehicles and have always been pleased.

I just looked too, and found there isn't much out there.
I wonder if there is a cross-reference application. Will Lincoln shocks work? What do PI's use? Limo Use ???
Any SUV cross reference?

I hadn't thought about that. If that is the case....it wouldn't be too hard to cure ;)

The Metco's have a Grease Fitting, so they can be easily lubricated

If I had the extra money they would already be on lol.
Do you have Metco's on it?
Nope......not yet, those will be in the next several months.
GRRRRRR this car put the icing on my bad day cake yesterday and is semi ruining my day today. As I stated before when I lowered the car it was not making any noise now it's back and I can even rock the front and hear it coming from the rear.

Do you have any Poly bushings on your car? ANYWHERE?? Maybe an Addco sway bar with thoes poly bushings?
You should check for these things even if you didnt do the work. If youre the original owner and never did any type of suspension mods, i'd be worried then LOL

If your rear end squeaks, lube it.

I'm not the original owner, is their a way I could tell if they were aftermarket sway bars? The bushing look in great shape, no cracking or anything. Should I try greasing the stock bushings?

1 - Lift Hood.
2 - Grease hood bumpers.
3 - Close hood.
4 - Test Drive.
If your rear end squeaks, lube it.
Yeah, what he said. Grab a can of WD-40 or CRC 5-56 (Powerlube) and spray the bushings. All the bushings you can see. Rubber dries out and a dab of lube goes a long way. You might hit the rubber exhaust hangers while you're at it.
Good luck,
J

I'll try and lube everything up sometime this weekend whenever it stops raining. Since yesterday evening it hasn't been making the noise at all now so I'm pretty sure it's not the shocks and is probably some bushings.

The sound may not be the shocks, but if they are leaking, they're shot!
