Purchased two of these keys from ebay and went to Lowes to have them cut, Lowes says that they can not cut keys with chips in them and that I have to go to the Dealership to have it cut.
Is the Dealership the only place I can have these keys cut, will they cut them even though I didn't get them from the Dealership, and will they charge me an arm & a leg for the cut...???
Any other alternate place that will cut keys with chips in them ???:help:

Any place that can cut keys, can cut them. What they can't all do is programme them.
You can programme them yourself.
Odd thing is that everywhere BUT Lowes gave me this nonsense about cutting keys. Lowes cut mine for me, and didn't even charge for it.

I had a Ford PATS key cut at a local hardware store (Tru-Value).
.......Nothing special about cutting them.......

The Lowes where I went to, the employee stuck the key in this device that actually came out negative, or showed a red light, stating the key had a chip.....I never mentioned a chip to the employee, thats when he told me that he could not cut the key if the light shows red on this device.:dunno:
Thanks, I'll just go else where and try again.

I took mine to the local Ace Hardware store, no problems cutting it.

Some time back I checked with my local neighborhood locksmith. They can cut the keys for me with no problem, I think they said they have the equipment to program them also, but I am not sure. Cost was slightly better than what it would cost at the dealership but the locksmith is more convenient for me. I still haven't gotten around to it though. :)

I'm confused..I thought that if you just had a cut "valet" key all it would do was open the doors, etc. If you stick that key in the ignition without it being programmed I thought the car wouldn't start. I just bought a key off Ebay myself, but I only have one key so I've been told I have to go to the dealer or to a locksmith equipped to program the key. Am I wrong??

you need two keys already programmed in order to programme more keys yourself.
If you only have one a locksmith or dealer has to programme them for you

Go to Ace and slip the kid at the key machine a few bucks. They can cut a PATS key no problem.

Careful with uncut PATS keys.....Most Wal-Mart....Lowes....Ace Harware will screw the cutting up 9 out of 10 times and that's OK with $0.49 key blanks!!!:shake: Throw away and start over at their expense!!:cool4:
The dealer uses a punch and the key code to make it perfect......I would go to the dealer with any blank PATS keys!!!

Actually the only time the key punch machine is used is if youre cutting it from a VIN/Key Code. All the dealers in town around here use Axxess Key Machines, which 'trace' the profile of your existing key, and use a motor to move the key and blank back and forth. I have NEVER had one that didnt work with that setup. You're thinking about the old Cole Key Cutting machines that requires the operator to line up the Original and the blank, which leaves room for error if they dont have them set up on the same starting point.

Most use the newer machines that use a cassette, and there isn't a lot of 'mistakes'

My point is.....Pats keys are much more expensive than the $0.49 "Throw Aways" and I wouldn't trust Wally-World/Lowes/Ace to cut mine.....I've had tooooo many screw ups from them!!:o
BTW.....The cartridge machines seem to be harder to work......The untrained operator can choose the wrong blank and/or not seat the original far enough....I went back THREE times over a set of boat keys....Grrrrrrrr!!!:shake:
I would think that a reputable Ford dealer would replace your Pats "Slug" if he screwed it up??

Anyone have the procedure to program a new chipped key, assuming two good originals? To program would he key have to be cut?
Second half of my question is I am installing a remote start system. It requires a programmed key be inserted in the unit. Can I program an uncut key, for insertion in the remote start? That way if someone broke in and found the key it would not turn the ignition, however it should allow the remote starter to function.... Am I nuts or can this be accomplished?

The procedure to program a new key is in the owners manual.
I also needed a key for my remote start unit. You can do one of two things.
1. Have the key cut program it, then break the metal part of the key off since you only need the handle.
2. Don't cut the key, program it and then use it in the remote start unit.
Which unit are you installing?

Bulldog Security's Remote start unit and their Part #791 bypass module I hope it isn’t as tedious as the directions make it look to install. Got any heads up suggestions?
2. Don't cut the key, program it and then use it in the remote start unit.
This is why I asked for instructions... The way I understood the instructions the key needs to turn the ignition which wont allow this (my preferred option).<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Great idea! I had not thought of this... It is this kind of stuff that really makes posting questions and hearing everyone chime in with their unique ideas worth it. Thankx a million! <o:p></o:p>

as long as it's programmed, any two programmed keys can be used

Key Programming Using Two Programmed Keys
1. Insert the first programmed ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN (maintain the ignition switch in RUN for 3 seconds but no more than 10 seconds).
2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF and remove the first key from the ignition lock cylinder.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttp://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/<o:p></o:p>
3. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition switch to OFF, insert the second programmed ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN (maintain the ignition switch in RUN for 3 seconds but no more than 10 seconds).
<o:p></o:p>
4. Turn the ignition switch to OFF and remove the second key from the ignition lock cylinder.
<o:p></o:p>
5. Within 20 seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to OFF, insert the unprogrammed ignition key (new key) into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN (attempt to start the vehicle).
<o:p></o:p>
6. If it is desired to program additional key(s), repeat the key programming procedure from Step 1. <o:p></o:p>

Boys what exactly will it cost me to get the key replaced at the dealer. I have a remote starter installed, so one key is hidden somewhere under the dash, and I seem to have 'misplaced' the other key. I have the valet key but it won't start the car, which I read on another thread, is a common problem after it sits for a year.
If I show up at the dealer with just the valet key is that enough? Could I just call them with my VIN and get one made?
Most of the better quality remote start systems will have a module that will program to the car so you do not have to hide a key. We have found them much easier to install.

My local dealer says $50 per key, i need to buy two, and $100 for labour. plus they need the car there! that means a tow. this is getting pricey

Ilco just came out with a new system for chip keys. You can program any key from one original. The computer writes the code and transfers it to a blank key.
Also, anyone can cut a PATS key, I used to cut them for people all the time. I would however give a disclaimer that we are not responsible if it doesnt work.

go to bypasskit.com and you can buy a bypass where you dont need to lose a key for remote start. they arent cheap however and your almost better off just getting a key programmed and installing it with the cheaper bypass. Two keys at my local dealer, $160.

get a genuine FORD dealer installed remote start system, there will by no key tucked up under dash. It is electronically bypass without key present.
You can buy it overcounter so as to have it installed by your installer
The dealers usually pay $250 (dealer cost) to have FORD authorized shop install remote start without alarm. Then they mark it up to the moon.
I have seen them on ebay here and there.
