That doesn't sound good. I drive my MM hard and don't have any tranny problems.

Over "FULL" or wrong fluid.....Foaming???
Either will cause fluid to "Burp" out of the vent and probably get on the exhaust...SMOKE!!!:shake:
How do you know it is HOT??

remember that ford says to leave the overdrive on when in pursuit....this is a change from the pre-electronic tranny days...I guess that qualifies for driving hard.

I was told to turn OD off if I'm going to be getting on it. I've also read on here that the trans does not do well or last long when shifting down to 2nd or 3rd from OD and it will burn out the OD band.

I don't know if that is necessary.....My TC locks in 3rd too and kicks off first (before downshifts) on acceleration from 3rd or 4th.....I've never experienced any problems with O/D on or off??

First off if you have a trans failure you really need to replace the trans cooler. The trans cooler has a thermostat built into and it's very hard to flush the lines. The dealers can get a high dollar machine that runs heated fluid through the trans cooler to clear it out, but it's still not the best. I know yours was over filled, I'm just passing this along.
What will kill an OD band in a few events is this.....There is a MPH that above that speed you will command 3rd gear solenoid state in manual 2. This does NOT mean you get third gear, what you really get is 2nd gear with the one way clutch overrunning, so the engine will return it idle speed. When you coast down below this speed (and it's typically in the 90-100 MPH range) the OD band comes and has to stop the reverse cylinder, but in doing this it now brings the engine speed up from idle (1000ish RPM) to that speed (5000ish RPM). The energy that goes into the band during this event is staggering and will burn it up pretty quick.
Several fixes, don't do that. Raise the MPH for a manual 3-2 pull in to 127.5 and assume that the person is smart enough to not not to overrev the engine. You can also install a kevlar band. It's very hard to burn up a kevlar band, even with a torch (yes I tried this once at Ford).....
I know it's more info than what this thread was asking for but that's what you get sometimes.

Thanks for the info - always a good thing!
A point to clarify - OD on or off during the high speed runs. That is, during the senario outlined above, is that occuring w/OD on or off? What is the prefered selction for hard driving @ high speed (and why if there is enough room and you have enough time to explain it to us)?
Thanks again Jerry for your input!

Hey Jerry....Glad you posted!!
If I'm reading this right then if the shifter is left in Drive with O/D off (3rd and TC) then the O/D band will not be involved???
BTW......I don't routinely go above 90 MPH and I guess this has to do with drag racers more than anything???
