View Full Version : Over Drive Question

I have reviewed some past posts but did not uncover this specific question.
From reading posts I have learned that it is best to have the OD off until at sustained HWY speeds. I have also been leaving the OD off on portions of my morning drive, which is hilly, to reduce going in and out of OD excessively.
Q / situation:Okay...so I have the driving conditions that are suitable to utilize OD...trouble is my MM won't go into OD. The RPM stayed at 2,500 while at 50 MPH and above. I made sure I was in "D" and not "2." I pulled into a parking lot; turned off the MM for about 5 min (thinking maybe the PCM need to be cycled...just guessing.) After that Everything was fine...as in the OD would kick-in as it should and the OD shifter button would again influence the transmission. I should mention when the OD was not engaging...the OD button was not having any influence on the tranny. Although the O/D dash light would illuminate and extinguish accordingly.
I will be going in for a transmission service soon as I am coming upon 30Kmi. Outside temp was in the mid 50s, MM was at normal operating temp. Any thoughts? Is this tranny behavior common?:help:
Thanks for considering this question.

Ah, good thinking! That would influence the torque convertor and not the upshift to O/D, though.

I dunno, Jake, If the engine saw enough load at certain speeds on a stock tune, it may not upshift.

However, at sustained highway speeds, foot on brake or not, he should still be feeling the OD on/off.

Next time that happens, drop it into Neutral click OD on then put it in D again. That should take care of it. Ask me how I know :)

Unfortunately, I have had this happen before as well.
Hard driviing w/OD off then, after slowing back down, no OD again until I shut down and restarted.
It's either PFM or something's going to break.
I have been religious on fluid & filter @ 20k intervals.

Not so much^^^, however, during this driving session, I did have to "get on it" to move myself out of the way of a crazy driver that was trying to kill me. I had just backed-up utilizing a modified "k" turn to reverse course when "mad max" came hauling a$$ around the corner...I was in the way one second but not the next. First time for me to chrip the tires...no braking through. Maybe I caused an abbynormal condition:beatnik:

My 2003 acts this way as well, but I do not have to shut down. Just go to neutral and back into D and all is well.

If/When this happens again I'll try your method!
