View Full Version : Installing a rear spoiler

I would like to add a rear spoiler to my Marauder. I love the overhanging deck lid spoiler and I want to know just how much trouble I'm getting myself into.
Should I leave the installation in the hands of a professional body shop or is this something I can do myself? (all I have is some regular tools and a garage, nothing fancy. I don't have any lifts or hyrdaulics or anything).
Also, I looked on eBay and there is an auction for a factory spoiler for a Marauder. Should I be wary of this? How else can I find and purchase a rear spoiler?
Thanks for any feedback.

Buy it from Ford. You know it fits CORRECTLY and is not some cheap knock-off that will be more aggravation than satisfaction. You must drill 4 1" holes under the trunk lid to access the FOUR 1/4" holes that must be drilled to hold the spoiler on. The OE spoiler has bolts AND two-sided adhesive to attach it. The bolts are threaded in and tightened snugly. Hell, if you lived near me - I would install it for FREE*. I had to put the asterisk there. Isn't there always one after the word 'free'?

They aren't that hard to install with basic tools. I put one on my GM after having it painted to match. But without question get the spoiler "kit" from FORD (not a replacement spoiler) it comes with all mounting hardware, instructions, and the most important drill guides which makes it almost foolproof. If you buy the replacement spoiler only the spoiler is all you will get.

If you don't feel comfortable drilling holes in your car have a body shop install it. It shouldn't cost too much.

Changing the oil is easy - getting the filter out without coating the underside of the car with oil is the REAL trick. Hell, that would be a neat David Blaine trick!

ummmm...
Call Ray, the dealer.
For less than $15 you can have the Oil Deflector 'clip on' to help with that...
We all bought them about 2 years ago from Ray.
BEST investment we've ever made.

Mebot, the spoiler can be installed using only ordinary hand tools. You'll need a hammer, a punch, a 1" hole saw, 1/8", 1/4" and 5/16" drill bits, and an 8mm socket. I've done 3 of them; the first took a bit over an hour, but the other two went quicker.
Call or PM Ray "The Dealer"..I'm sure he can still get them.

I ordered the Ford part from Ray and it was right around $200 shipped to me. It came with the spoiler, all parts mentioned above, and instructions.
I did have the body shop that painted it do the install and they said it was pretty easy, epsecially with the alignment pieces that it comes with. They did the paint and install of that along with the "S55" taillight/backup light painting, and some other stuff for me.
Car looks good, but no chance to give it a good washing and get pictures yet. I am happy I did it. Wasn't at first, but now that the winter wheels/tires are off and the stock wheels with brand new tires are back on I am feeling better again!!!

Install the spoiler yourself, you can take your time and do it right. You don't want some young kid at a body shop that doesn't care reading instructions on how to install my spoiler.
I did it myself, took my time and came out perfect.

I installed mine today. I got the pre-painted one off ebay. Although I can't confirm it's got the same mounting setup....here is the break down.
1. Use plastic clips to determine where the holes in the trunk will be....VERY Easy !
2. At this point I removed the Mercury badge as well....still trying to figure out how I will fill/cover the holes.
3. Now comes the difficult part. Screws attach the spoiler from the inside of the trunk, but the trunk re-inforcement is covering the fastener locations. You have to use a hole saw....or in my case a dremmel to cut the access holes. Anyone know if trunk blankets/covers are still available ? I'd like to cover that all up.
4. I used a water proof sealant around the holes on the trunk.....held in place, and bolted it down. (It's also recommended that you paint the bare metal from the cut.)
Anyhow...It looks good and has a factory fit. The only thing that appears to be different is that it doesn't have 3M tape. It does have a foam gasket around the perimeter of the part that touches the trunk.
I'll post some pics as soon as she's cleaned up.

You can only see it if you look up and back at that part of lid. No one would ever notice it unless you point it out or the dremel messed up lid

What no trunk emblem. If you don't like the Mercury emblem get a gods head emblem
Just my opinion congrat's on install :)

I installed a used one with no instructions or template Ryan. I just masked off the entire section with blue tape and found dead center of the trunk lid and the spoiler and carefully measured from there the left and right holes and sharpied it. I think I had to enlarge one of the holes by a 1/16", other than that it was a perfect fit. Then I simply peeled the tape off, brushed some paint on the inside of the holes, and installed.
I was nervous drilling into it but after all it's only a decklid..
I do suggest using a cheep automatic (spring loaded) centering punch to keep the drill bit from wondering. I have one I bought from Harbor Freight for a couple of bucks years ago that still works great.
