View Full Version : Leather? It was inevitable....

Well, it was gonna happen to someone, sometime......
and I guess I am the lucky winner!

I was conditioning the leather seats this morning, and I discover a one inch long cut in the large forward panel of the drivers side rear seat cushion. It is as if a razor blade cut it, clean, real clean, and not thru to the foam underlay.

I cannot for the life of me figure out what I could, or my son could - have done to cause this. I am sickened......and bewildered.

Monday I look for someone who fixes these kind of things. For now, I wonder if what any of you might have as far as advice?

 :mad2: :help:  :( :censor:

If it's split but not all the way through, you may be able to carefully superglue it back together. I would apply it with a quilting needle to assure not too much applied. You also need a real steady hand. When the repair is complete, they sell that powderized leather repair kit in fabric shops, Walmart, etc. Mix up a little, sparingly apply it to any remaining surface defect, and try to smooth to a matching finish. I've repaired a leather jacket with this stuff and it seems to work pretty good. I can notice it because I know where to look, but others tell me they can't see it.

Get this pruduct: VLP adhesive. It stands for vinyl leather and plastic. Get yourself a piece of vinyl or leather and cut it in a square shape larger than the size of rip. You then carefully insert the material through the cut to the backside of it. Then you put the glue on that square and hold everything together til it dries. My dad uses this on all of his cars that have had rips. Ive seen the repair job with this glue outlast the car...no joke.

Sounds like mine. Only mine was on the driver's seat, same panel, and done by one of the service monkey's. They sewed in a new panel, which got totally screwed up. Leather was loose and the panel was the wrong texture. Had the area SM come out and look at it and after some "words," I got a new bottom seat cover.

Just a heads up on what your dealer will do. I'd try and find a new/used bottom if it's that bad. If not, go with their ideas.

Cruz: Understand your upset. There are repair kits around to fix it. I have asked at car show what the guys use to fix "little" problems. They love to talk! Hope it works out.

Are you sure it wasn't like that all along? Take it to the dealer and try to get them to replace it.

If you are anywhere near Newark Ohio, I can refer you to a really good auto upholstery shop there.

My advice: Take to someone who does this type of stuff for a living. Say "Fix it" Explain; Find matching leather, Make it look like new. Pay for repair after work is completed and inspected.

The leather is expensive, I wouldn't want to have to buy a whole new rear seat cover cuz' I tried to fix something I know nothing about and screwed the pooch.

Fixed, besides a slightly rough surface, you can't tell it ever happened.

Cruz,

Glad to here it's been fixed to your satisfaction. If anyone is looking for a good interior shop. Go to a street rod show or stop someone with a rod. They usually know the places that are craftsman. The front seat on my '69 Ford Talladega was repaired by guy that specialized in designing and making his own interiors.
Other shops weren't interested, he did a fantastic job, replaced a small cloth section with some original material I skinned from another seat.

Welcome back, nice to hear from you.

MartyO:

I dropped the seat (only) off at my local dealership. I needed the car, so all they got was the seat. The srvice woman actually gave me a hard time...."most people drop off the whole car, where am I supposed to put this thing". I wanted to tell her to put it up her a$$. I have been getting nothing but attitude from this dealership lately....time to call the ownership I think.
Anyway, a prive upholtery repair guy comes in every wednesday, and he fixed it. How, I don't know? I will call him directly today as I have his home ph. number. His fee, plus the dealerships little add on (ripoff), added up to around $50. Like I said, besides rough to the touch, one can't even tell it was done.

Now it's off to fight the 'incorrectly' installed spoiler issue. This one is gonna get messy....someones gonna buy a new trunk lid....and it ain't gonna be me! :mad2:

Cruz - What is wrong with your spoiler. It appears that your dealer installed it. :(
